Final Fantasy 15 Skips E3 for Gamescom

"The promotion for the main title will officially begin at Gamescom," says director Tabata; Short trailer earmarked for LA event.

Following the recent release of the FFXV demo, Square Enix says it doesn't have time for a major E3 showcase.
Following the recent release of the FFXV demo, Square Enix says it doesn't have time for a major E3 showcase.

Key new details on Final Fantasy XV will not be revealed at this year's E3 event in June, according to the game's director Hajime Tabata.

Speaking on the latest Active Time Report--a semi-regular video briefing presented by publisher Square Enix--Tabata explained that the team has instead targeted the Gamescom event in August for its next major promotion and marketing initiative.

"I think most people are expecting a big reveal around E3," he said in the video embedded below.

"E3 doesn't give us sufficient time to fully prepare [to release pertinent information about the game]. So I have been discussing with our marketing teams, and we've actually been considering Gamescom in August, instead of E3, as the target for the next major reveal.

"So we'll be taking a break from E3 this year," he said.

The news comes a week after it was revealed that publisher Square Enix will host its own dedicated E3 press conference on the Tuesday ahead of the official E3 opening. The lack of Final Fantasy XV information at this event will make room for several other big games from the publisher, including Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 3, and a new Hitman title. It's not certain if Square Enix has another major game to announce at the show.

Sitting alongside Tabata in the video is Square Enix marketing manager Akio Ofuji, who added that Final Fantasy XV will not likely be completely absent from the Los Angeles event.

"I think we'll still prepare a short trailer for E3, but I think it'll serve as a segue into our Gamescom plans, and make you all excited for what's ahead," he said.

Tabata added that, while the FFXV development team will be relatively quiet in the months of May, June, and July, there are extensive marketing opportunities in the months that follow.

"Promotion for the main title will officially begin at Gamescom. Right after that, there is PAX Prime in North America at the end of August to early September. Then in mid-September, we have TGS in Japan. This group of events will be the platform for our reboot, or restart if you will, towards the release of the main game."

Elsewhere in the 84-minute video, Tabata and Ofuji outline fifteen feedback points that they are taking on board for the Final Fantasy 15 demo. A recent survey, issued to those who had access to the demo, sought feedback on what areas required more work.

Wait, so... they're doing their own keynote at E3, at the SAME TIME as Nintendo, yet Final Fantasy XV is not gonna be part of it?!

What are they gonna show at E3, then?

Sorry Square Enix, no one is skipping Nintendo's keynote just to watch you announce more Hitman sequels and other Eidos crap.

I hope that means they have something new and cool to show at e3 and can stop riding the coattails of FF.

But more than likely what we'll get is something stupid like Final Fantasy Versus XV, which will eventually get turned into FF16.

So Square-Enix has this big live-stream to talk about all the feedback they got on the Episode Duscae demo and your big take-away for this article was "Final Fantasy XV is skipping E3 this year".

@Random_Matt@freedom01: that is true, you are too focused on the enemy right in front of you, that you just forget about the others that are around you, and just miss the timing when you notice the red arrow? thing

@freedom01@Random_Matt: It doesn't help that the camera is dead slow at turning. Also, the sabertooth creatures or whatever they are called are the most annoying things in the game/demo. Overall, not the greatest combat mechanics, seems that you hold square and press triangle most of the time.

@Random_Matt@freedom01: the camera definitely needs work. I got dizzy fighting those saber tooth creatures. When you lock-on, you expect the camera to follow that enemy, but no, it doesn't and the lock-on is disabled when the enemy is not in your view (that was very annoying when you are trying to do damage control by eliminating little by little but they go somewhere away from your view and get mixed in with the others)

For combat, I really do hope they put in a option for manual input. Just holding down the square button felt lacking. Overall the game looked fantastic

@etremelegendary: 1.5 and 2.5 for xbox one and ps4 seems like something they would do but not until we are closer to the release of 3.

@htehtrhrtjrgjyj@etremelegendary: Oh please. They already released those for PS3. How much better can it look on a PS4 when it's based on a PS2 game?

FFX/X2 on PS3 does not look as good as a PS3 RPG that isn't a remaster of a PS2 game. It was unnecessary and greedy to release it on PS4. That is not a PS4 game. It's still a PS2 looking game but uprezzed.

@htehtrhrtjrgjyj@etremelegendary: Wouldn't be surprised if we see a Dream Drop Distance remake too. Since it basically sets up KH3 plus Noruma has mentioned wanting to do something along those lines with it.

Then there's KH Chi to think about too

@davem1992: I don't know, SE did announce following the star ocean announcement that they have multiple ps4 exclusive games in the works that haven't been announced. So I was assuming they are working with Sony for some exclusive stuff.

That's a pretty tall statement. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Japan won't do any deals with MS and we all know Final Fantasy sells on PlayStation.

Except for when it sold on Nintendo. Also the creator of final fantasy went on to do Lost Odyssey outside of the FF franchise, it was more quality even than 13, and more like what you'd expect from final fantasy, and that was an Xbox 360 exclusive.

@fiol77@davillain-: And it went to PC as well. Capcom wants that money. FF always sells on PlayStation and a Japanese developer had to be a fool to do exclusive with MS.

this just means they have a TON of other stuff to show... this is the year s-e makes a strong return to the company we all want them to be as far as their jrpg output is concerned. i think they will discuss the new dissidia final fantasy game as well as dragon quest heroes, star ocean 5 and maybe even kingdom hearts 3. it is gonna be a great year indeed.

Makes sense, if you've played the demo you'd know this game is no where near ready for a full release. I don't think people realize that this game is going to need a lot of work. I'm going to give it 2 more years lol.

That is totally fine by me. We are only 2 months away from E3 2015 and that certainly doesn't give anyone more time to be prepared so going to Gamescom in August sounds good to me since August is a boring month.
