Final Fantasy 15 DLC Canceled, Director Hajime Tabata Leaves; Square Enix Posts $33 Million Loss

Three of the four planned episodes have been canceled.

242 Comments

In an unexpected announcement today, Square Enix announced the cancellation of three of the four planned Final Fantasy XV episode expansion packs and also confirmed that game director Hajime Tabata has left the company. Tabata's last day at Square Enix was October 31.

The canceled Final Fantasy DLC episodes include Aranea, Lunafreye, and Noctis. The fourth one, Ardyn, remains in development, and is scheduled to launch in March 2019.

The expansion packs were being developed by Luminous, the new Square Enix internal studio. However, that team will now focus on making a new AAA game, though it hasn't been announced yet. In an earnings report, Square Enix announced a major change to Luminous that resulted in an "extraordinary loss" amounting to $33 million. Until now, it wasn't know what that loss was related to, but now it looks like it's connected to the DLC cancellation.

In announcing his resignation, Tabata said, "I honestly believe the reason we were able to get this far is because of all you loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

As for what he'll do next, Tabata said he's starting his own company. "I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal," he said.

"From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans. I would like to thank everyone who continues to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally," Tabata added.

Also during the announcement event, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XV's Comrades multiplayer will now be released as a standalone game, meaning you don't need the base game to play it. There will be a further 10 new bosses, as well as more costumes and weapons in the standalone game.

FFXV: Multiplayer Comrades, as it's called, will launch on December 13. Those who already bought the Comrades expansion will get the new, standalone edition for free.

Also during the presentation, Square Enix announced a new cross-promotion with Fina Fantasy XIV Online. An event called "Adventurer From Another World" will be available inside Final Fantasy XV on PS4, Xbox One, and PC starting on December 12.

Another announced as a short-form anime called Final Fantasy XV Episode Prologue is on the way. A teaser will be released on December 15, with a second one coming on January 10.

This was my first FF experience. I kinda liked the game enough to finish it twice. Still have to finish the DLC chapters. But it's such a strange game. I really enjoyed it until it was kinda open world. I hated the driving from 1 point to another but really liked going out in the night and fighting stronger monsters. But I really hated Noctis as a main protagonist and his band of emo kids was annoying as well. The only one I liked was Gladio but that's it. The story was too messy for me and I also watched the FF movie beforehand.

The game has so much potential but it's hindered by an uninspired combat system and the fact that you spend sooo much time driving. I wanted to enjoy it more but it was OK. Worth the 30€ I paid for it during a sale.

No idea why people say FF15 was a FLOP when it sold more than 8 million as of today. YES, the game was a complete letdown to a ton of FF fans (including myself) and SE has a real problem with their own game engines (crystal tools and luminous studio) along with long dev cycles and I think it is finally catching up to them. let us not forget a ton of key talent has quit over the years because of the management.

@icelandichossi: Not a sales flop. Just a critical flop. Even still they wanted more than 8 million, especially since the game was discounted to $20 not long after launch, which is always a sign of failure.

FFs don't normally get discounted that much that quickly, so the 8 million figure is a bit misleading. In dollars sales it's not as high as it looks.

I’ve never purchased a Square game that wasn’t a former Eidos property. They make a specific game for a specific gamer. In other words, they’re too niche for me.

I played the game a few hrs, i just couldnt get into it. The main characters are the most generic cutouts there could be.

They need to go back the old style, mix of FF4-8 and unique main characters like FF9. I did like the attempt at open world and real time combat, just really boring. You could take any single character from FF4 and write an entire game about them thats how good they were compared to the recent FF.

@Yams1980:

As an older gamer since NES days, i wouldnt completely agree with this. Certain aspects of the older games are great, yes but not everything. I wont miss the combat system of any of them prior to 10. The completely inconvenient method of party formations and level grinding was not fun.

@amillionhp: ya i agree. The turn based combat in older FF games are really tough to play these days. Not even much strategy behind it compared to modern turn based games that give you much more control. So true about grinding also, but even a lot of new games have grinding which is a lazy way to make a game feel longer.

The report says the loss is from, “Disposition of the portion of the content production account.” This account is made up of capitalized development costs. The disposition could be partly a cash expense depending on when the costs were incurred. The report also says the loss is from, “Impairment losses on intangible assets.” This portion is just a paper loss (not real money).

In summary, the $33 million loss sounds worse than it is.

@WARRZONE: I didn't understand any of that. But it means Tomb Raider, Octopath and all the other games they released this year was not enough to make any money. Something lost them so much money that all the profits their successful games made were wiped out by this. That's a worrying thing and it might lead to layoffs. Hopefully from the JApanese divisions and not the western studios.

Feel sorry for square. probably they will shutdown more studios overseas and being a restructure. FF 15 was a flop, FF7 remake will be a flop !! things will only be worse. I have all FF games and love all ! ( i am playing one right now as i write this). Square should stick with the classic JRPG ! like octopath traveler!! forget this modern s**t !

Lol FF 15 sold 5 million copies in a SHORTER time than the original FF 7 and FF 10 did. FF 15 is actually documented in public record as the FASTEST selling FF to date. As of a month ago, not even 2 years out yet, FF 15 has sold 7.7 MILLION copies. PC version is expected to carry the game to 10 million copies, which would make it the 3rd most popular FF to date. It was FAR from a flop lol. The money lost was because the guy working on it decided to quit and work on something else. The money lost was due to dlc stuff

@n9302347078: Yeah but those XV sales were at bargain bin discount prices. YOu can get Royal edition for $20 right now which includes all the DLC. The actual dollar value of those sales is closer to 3 million copies at $60.

FF 15 has sold 7.7 MILLION copies. PC version is expected to carry the game to 10 million copies

No way, no how. There's no chance the PC version of an FF is going to sell 3+ million copies. It's not even a market that cares for that series, since the series never cared for the PC market. Even very successful franchises like Call of Duty don't do 3 million on the PC.

@lostn:

Wrong. First of all, bargain bin prices are secondhand prices, and second hand prices are NOT counted. About 5 million copies were sold inside of the first year for $60 a piece, plus whatever many bought the season pass.

Also CoD actually does 3 million quite easily on PC. SE used the initial pc sales to estimate the 10 million sales total. It’s documented in the public record that FF15 sold 5 million copies a LOT sooner than the original ff7 and ff10 did. FF15 is actually their fastest selling FF15 in franchise history. That’s actually a documented fact.

You may not like the game, but it was both critically praised and a huge financial success. Don’t let internet trolls fool you. While many players hated the game, those players are in the minority as proven by the game’s sales numbers

@n9302347078:

Don't be a fool. That game was selling well below $60 within the first few months. I was one of the idiots who bought a copy.

First of all, bargain bin prices are secondhand prices, and second hand prices are NOT counted.

What you choose to call it is up to you. Bargain bin is when stuff isn't selling for the price you want to sell them for. They are new stock, not second hand. If you want to give it another name, that's your prerogative.

Also CoD actually does 3 million quite easily on PC.

Even if it's true, FF15 ain't getting anywhere near CoD sales on any platform.

It’s documented in the public record that FF15 sold 5 million copies a LOT sooner than the original ff7 and ff10 did.

Maybe, but it's tail end was reached a lot sooner.

FF15 is actually their fastest selling FF15 in franchise history. That’s actually a documented fact.

"Fastest selling" is a vague and ill defined term. What does it even mean? Fastest to reach 1 million? Sold most copies in the first month? First day? Without being specific, it is meaningless, and terms like that are reserved for PR and spin doctors.

You may not like the game, but it was both critically praised and a huge financial success.

It's the lowest scoring numbered FF since the foundation of metacritic. Even lower than FFXIII, one of the most hated games in the series. Financial success, I'm not so sure. It sold a lot of copies but they wanted 10 million as their internal target and it hasn't reached that. It's certainly not the highest selling FF of all time. It's millions off from that.

It's certainly no failure. But if it sold that many copies and was so critically praised, I'm not sure why they're struggling to sell DLC for it. The market for the DLC should be huge. There's no need for a director to leave or episodes to get canceled. Even if he left, the team surely couldn't be so dependent on him that no one else could fill his shoes?

That loss... yeah. XV had to have at least something to do with it. Especially when they've had so many other successes like Shadow and Octopath. Something hit them so hard that it wiped out all the profits made by the successful games and put them $33m in the red.

That god awful Kingsglaive movie that was a required companion piece to XV if you don't want gaps in the story, cost $100 million to make. What a flop. That was not from this financial year and did not contribute to the loss, but when you evaluate XV as a whole and not just the game, maybe it wasn't as financially successful as you believe?

Don’t let internet trolls fool you. While many players hated the game, those players are in the minority as proven by the game’s sales numbers

You should get a job at Square PR. The sales numbers show that they have sold fewer copies than most FFs since 7 even though it's supposedly the fastest selling FF of all time. And by the way, many were purchased at big discounts. You can get Royal Edition right now for $20.

@lostn:

The only fool is you. Most games go on sale after a few months, but those sales don’t last. They’re just temporary. The bulk of FF15’s purchases were at the $60 price.

Also bargain bin prices ARE second hand prices. That’s the textbook definition of bargain bin prices lol.

SE estimated 10 million copies based on initial pc sales. That’s their estimate. You underestimate the game’s actual popularity among new gamers.

And fastest selling is NOT vague at all. FF15 has currently sold almost 8 million copies in less than 2 years. That’s faster than ff7 and ff10 sold that many. It is documented in the public record as the fastest selling game in Final Fantasy franchise history.

Uhm, it’s at 81% on metacritic. Anything above 70% there is considered a critical success.

Also, ff7 and ff10 are DECADES old. In its first 2 years, the original ff7 didn’t even sell 5 million copies. It actually took almost another decade of ff7 sequel games to sell the other 5 to 6 million. If Ff 15 is given another 5 to 10 years like ff7 was given, it can reach 10 million easily. What? You really think ff7 sold 11 million copies in its first 2 years? By the time ff10 reached 10 million copies sold, ff7 was still at around 7 or 8 million sold. That’s actually in the public record. 10 million in sales will take 4 to 5 years minimum for any ff game to hit lol. It ain’t no CoD.

You should actually take a look at those ff sales numbers of all those ff games since 7 because it’s clear you have NOT lol. I actually have. Took those ff games 4 to 5 years minimum to reach 8 to 11 million. FF15 sold almost 8 million in LESS than 2 years. It can easily sell 2 million more in 2 to 3 years. Also, most didn’t buy it when the royal edition came out. That was the year later grand update so to speak and was discounted because the game’s been out a year and a year is when most companies decide to discount games. Look at how Netherealm handled Injustice 2 with the year later Legendary Edition including everything from its Ultimate edition at half the price. It’s simply what game companies do after a year or so lol. The bulk of Ff15’s sales came from the first year at $60.

The loss is simply from the director wanting to do something else and it’s a write off of the unfinished dlc.

I don't know a whole lot about Square Enix besides the fact they made Kingdom Hearts when I was a kid, but this news is unfortunate for all the fans. I have noticed a lot of people saying that some silly business decisions are to blame and that's a highly plausible thesis given their recent title releases. Oh well. They had a good run.

It's about time SE's bad business decisions caught up with them. All of those strange expansions for a bad game (FF15), all that money rebuilding FF14, releasing weird niche games like "World of Final Fantasy" and in general burying their heads in the the sand when it comes to making modern big budget games. You could even consider DQ11 to be a AAA low budget game if you ask me, even though I like it a lot. Eidos can't carry them.

Then you have the problem in Japan of the culture of yes men and working for 1 company your whole life, ect. There's a lot group think that is making them turn out below industry standard content.

@csward: bad decisions? LOL

FFXIV being remade was arguably one of the BEST decisions the company has ever made. It is on track to potentially surpass WoW and become the most successful MMORPG in history. At the very least it is already one of the most successful in history after the rebirth.

FFXV was a profit overall and is still selling strong.

Luminious engine was the main hindrance of FFXV but now that it is complete they have the tech to potentially pump out AAA games at a rate no other game studio can in the world while keeping quality up. We will see if they properly utilize it tho... (This is a biggggg deal)

KH3 is on the horizon.

FF7 Remake is potentially 3 games and will likely be very successful, but we will see.

DQ series is successful generally.

Just Cause 4 sold well.

Tomb Raider games all did well, just below SE ridiculous expectations.

Deus Ex HR did very well.

They have seen successful mobile projects as well.

I'm barely even touching what they have done in the last few years.

Yes, I wish FFXV had been fully fleshed out but considering its development history it isn't surprising. The next game shouldn't have the tech issues that resulted in what happened to FFXV so we can hope it works out because the tech has already been completed as Luminous engine.

@SchnabbleTab: Um... no Square Enix is still going to use Luminous engine. The reason current projects like FF7 Remake and KH3 aren't using it was made VERY VERY clear before. It was because Luminious engine was still in development at the time as was FFXV and they would NOT use it for any project until FFXV's release so that FFXV could prove it was ready (aka battle test it). Once this occurred, and Tabata found it more than proved itself, then they would be free to use it in-house for other projects. No idea why you would say otherwise with no info ever pointing against this stance from SE or any sources... JC4 was an obvious typo as I meant JC3 which has several million sales thus far.

The only thing that could possibly save this franchise now would be for Squenix to hire back Sakaguchi out of reitrement. But that's about as likely as Konami bringing back Kojima or Disney bringing back George Lucas. Without their creators, none of these franchises will ever amount to much else.

Just my opinion here... Square should go back to turned-based RPG’s. Make a AAA game on a current console, not a portable one.

Also, I don’t want every character to be every class and learn every skill. I want characters who are characters with preset jobs and preferences, not blank canvases.

Render all armor and weapons so they all show up on the character. If that means less armor in game, so be it.

Focus more on single player, not multiplayer.

Look to be fair the only time i thought final fantasy 15 was dead was when (well not dead just concerns) assassin's creed festival, and all the kingsglaive disk put on dlc orders(while everyone was pirating the movie and the entire franchise online, no I do not do that that's a crime) and later the king's edition with all the dlc on digital disk? Rather on physical disk such a insult, the biggest flop was the arcade game that eventually was given away for free. No idea why the game couldn't stay in development, and have other franchises push it to where it needed to go under secretcy. Shame Ubisoft odyssey larger probably then ff15, and they released two games in two year,s not saying the games are terrible but geez.

@ccgod: Or whatever that new game Luminous studio is working on. Remember, it's not $33 million lost, but $33 million spent to produce the extra DLC that they have since cancelled and then written off as a loss. It's not like they won't use any of those assets.
