Final Fantasy 14's Stormblood Expansion Release Date Announced

Coming June 2017.

Final Fantasy XIV's next expansion, Stormblood, will launch on June 20, 2017, Square Enix has announced. The date was confirmed during the game's Fan Fest event this weekend.

As announced previously, Stormblood takes place in the location of Ala Mhigo and will have players face off against a bad guy by the name of Zenos.

It also adds new areas, and you can expect there to be a "full standalone game's worth of content." A fourth residential area is also being added, while there will be new Primals, dungeons, and high-end raids, too.

Read GameSpot's previous coverage to learn more about Stormblood. You can also watch a teaser for the expansion in the video embed above.

No Caption Provided

When Square Enix announced Stormblood in October, it scheduled it to launch in early summer 2017, so the June date aligns with that.

Stormblood is a follow-up to a previous expansion called Heavensward; read GameSpot's review of that expansion here.

The game is pretty awesome, is probably one of my favorites final fantasy games, the games is very huge and you have tons to do. Extreme bosses are pretty awesome and hardcore, it really requires to work as a team to be able defeat them and you get the feel of satisfaction when you beat them.

My only complaint is probably the weekly restrictions (some of them), I dont really like them it because some of the gear it takes a while to get, and by the time you get them they release a new patch with better armor and easier to get.

@jako998: I hope you get the chance! It's one of the best in the series for me. Just so much shit to do, and a really helpful community for newbies too.

@jako998: it was postponed indefinitely on the Xbox because Microsoft would not allow PC and PS3/PS4 players to play with Xbox players. Now that Microsoft changed their tune and want to allow that kind of play, I expect to see it soon.

@Flyin3lvl: They are in mobile. FF Mobius deals with the doomed altered timelines of Chaos in FF1 (so more like a spinoff of FF1) and FF Brave Exvius is an original story.

Mobius was voted best looking mobile game of 2016 and FF BE graphics are FF6 style (not the remake, the old one -which was better).

@Geogyf: i will be honest i presumed the mobile games were just watered down versions of final fantasy i should give them a look and at least try

edit - and agree the old version is better then the remake

@Flyin3lvl:

just had a look in the play store

brave exvius i recognise that one now seeing it on the phone , i was interested then forgot about it so thanks for the reminder - my mem card was full of tunes so no space to download at the time and choose to keep the tunes over the game

mobius i remember seeing the teaser shots and trailers but only had a release date for japan i think it was and updates kinda fell short soon after and didnt think to check when it was out and again forgot all about it while playing various final fantasy on the console / vita

@Flyin3lvl: Well you cant compare them with the console/pc versions. The difference is night and day

The specific games are made by mobile companies (good at what they do) who rent the FF license from Square.

While the games i mentioned they are good to f2p players (for the most part) ,they try to goad you to spend cash (which IMO isnt worth it). I recommend both games to you, but i think FFBE has a better f2p model and looks more like a FF game (with dungeon explorations, towns etc).

There is also FFRK (FF Record Keeper) if you like more the 8-bit NES FF graphics. Its story is more simplistic though, but it also has a good f2p model and it showers you with units and events from all FF games (all FF mobile games do that with various collaborations/events, but FFRK does it much more frequently.

If you are looking for another FF game that is quite good, there is FF Dimensions. It resembles FF 4 in scope/quality/game systems and has a lot of content for a mobile game (50+hours).

Honestly I dont know why this game wasnt released in consoles/pc..

It costs money though (i think 15 euros?), since its not a f2p game by any means. But its quite good.

@Geogyf: thank you for the recommendations, and i didnt know they were licensed out - i think some of these would have been nice additions to the vita as well and money isnt an issue for dimensions , 50+ hours is a good for the money -

so many final fantasy i need that ring that will freeze the atb so i can play them all , i do enjoy the exploration and dungeons

question is which one to try first?

@Flyin3lvl: Obviously the first choice should be FF Dimensions, since its made by Square.

Its also b2p (and IMO that puts its a class above the rest) and a good game. Uses the job system (like FF5). Its exactly like a traditional FF game minus the f2p bullshit. I checked and its also cheap now (7 euros)

Next in line would be the mobile games. IMO the best would be FFBE, then FFRK or Mobius.

FFBE and Mobius are turn-based which means your characters go first, then the enemies etc. Rest are ATB-based.

Each title has its own strengths, and each his own weakness. All mobile games are gacha games, meaning that they have some currency that you use to pull for stuff. Usually this stuff is random (meaning you wont get always what you hope) so one must try his chance in specific banners where the chance for that specific chance increases.

Mobius's gacha is card-based, FFBE's is character-based and FFREK's is weapon-based

Mobius is different than the rest since you only have one character that can change jobs. Plus it uses a card=equip ability system. It has an original story/music, cutscenes, voice acting (!) etc. Kinda hard to get to at first,

FFBE and FFRK share a common theme which is: you can play with other FF characters (ex Exdeath & Vaan in same party?)

FFBE has original story/music & original characters that can summon visions (meaning characters from other FF games). All characters come with their own skills, some are more powerful than others and you cant change a lot in their skills. Plays a lot like a traditinal RPG, overworld, quests, towns, explorations

FFRK has one new playable character (and another non-playable one) and you can put characters from other FF games in your party (a whole lot more than FFBE plus they are more accessible to get) and their skills are blank for you to fill (but 2 slots only). Stats, limit breaks, class is pretedermined. And you travel in other FF games killing mobs and bosses. Copies music from other FF games for maximum amount of nostalgia.

Check all games in Youtube, but to summarize: 1. FF Dimensions, 2. FFBE, 3. FFRK or FFMobius.

FFXIV is all we have after the many dissapointments from the single player installments, its odd that a MMO has the best story and gameplay in the final fantasy series at this point and time

@bejita231: best story? naaaah, it's functional but far from bis. Don't get me wrong i love this game (gonna re-sub on 4.0), but story (and storytelling) isn't it's forte.

Imho they need to find a way how to "shape" the world with the current happenings / progressing with the story.

Like the thing i really dislike(d) is how Alexander didn't affect the world around him. His presence wasn't felt, not even locally except him being there in a bubble.

Like how Bahamut (Prime) reshaped the world, those crystals around Coil and well, everywhere, ruins, the atmosphere of rebuilding/recovering the nation(s) while the remnants of destruction where present. You could feel the dread of what it was, and not only by a cutscene.

Also not seeing him (almost at all except for few moments) helped to keep this feeling of a dread, that a creature that can reshape landscapes in a couple of minutes/seconds makes you feel.

While Alex? meh... just a blob on screen that you can always see, but never really moves except in 3/4 CS and last fight.

Overall i think the general settings and story of 3.0 was very weak, and some raids threatened to destroy the game (A3 progression, A4 dps checks, A6 with that terrible design of 4-mini-bosses and rewind at the start , A8 dancing, rope jumping and exam type of study and practice levels).

That killed the game for me (3.x), but i will be back (optimistic) for 4.0.

They are confident enough to remove the "a realm reborn" tag. Glad there are many players back now.

@sakaixx: I sometimes forget people get confused by that...

1.0 Final Fantasy XIV

2.0 FFXIV A Realm Reborn

3.0 FFXIV Heavensward

4.0 FFXIV Stormblood

A Realm Reborn was the 'expansion' name, never the base name of the game.

@sakaixx: except for anyone who paid enough attention to realise you don't name a new game 2.0, also the team who work on FFXIV do recognise 1.0, they use its story for the very backbones A Realm Reborn was built on... Sure we cannot play 1.0 anymore but in every other sense ARR is FFXIVs first expansion.

@SexyJazzCat: Which it is, but it is also a direct continuation of the story and lore from 1.0... If it wasn't then ARRs patches would also have started at 1.0 instead of it being the 2.x series.

@luciferous: yeah! since the players actually failed at the end of FF 1.0.

What a bold way to finish 1.0 and kick 2.0 with that awesome video!

And it certainly paid off!

PS. You forgot to add that Red Mage is one of the new jobs (was revealed today)

The other job is foreshadowed with a Spiderman T-shit (yea, the producer always wares a T-Shirt with heroes to foreshadow jobs, to build hype)

Fate of the third job is still unknown (we don't know if we are getting just 2 or 3 jobs at the release of the expansion)

@noirtenshin: I do hope we get a third, having one for each role would be ideal, means everyone has something to play with and the duty finder doesn't get completely clogged with just RDMs like the great ROG/NIN fiasco of a while back.

@joannadark360: Not everyone is a troll, if FFXIV came to Xbox, I'd buy it just to show support for them bringing their games to more fans. Hope they bring a lot of those SE games over, great games should be available to everyone.
