Final Fantasy 14 Is Coming To Xbox One, At Long Last

FFXIV for Xbox One is in progress.

With X019 happening, plenty of big announcement have been made for Microsoft's gaming platforms, including several Japanese games making their way to Xbox. A total of 10 Final Fantasy games will hit Xbox Game Pass, while Sega revealed three Yakuza games will debut on the platform as well. But what wasn't part of the stage show was Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirming that Square Enix's MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, will be coming to Xbox One.

In addressing the press at X019, Spencer said, "I wanted you to know, rest assured that we will be bringing that game [Final Fantasy XIV] to Xbox. We have a great relationship with Yoshida-san [FFXIV director] and we’re working through what it means to bring [to Xbox] a cross-platform MMO that they’ve run for years."

While it may not come as too much of a surprise, since FFXIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida has continually said he hopes to eventually bring the game to other platforms, Spencer's statement makes it clear that things are actually moving along. No potential release date or launch window was suggested, however.

In a previous interview with Yoshida-san, he told us, "My direction has never changed from the beginning when we started with A Realm Reborn: strive to have as many people play FFXIV on multiple platforms. Secondly, I want to allow people to play with their friends without any cross-platform limitations. I am still in discussion with Microsoft and Nintendo to make this a reality."

FFXIV and all three of its expansions are playable now on PC and PS4; for more on why the MMORPG is important, be sure to read our FFXIV Shadowbringers review, post-mortem interview with Yoshida-san, and feature on how the latest expansion became one of the best stories told in franchise history. If it's not freetoplay or on gamepass, then I won't bother with it. I have a friend who plays it a lot on pc, but I don't care for mmorpg much.

Oh hell yeah! I’ve been really wanting to play this game and have been hoping to see it come to the Xbox. Hopefully not that far away.

I wish I still had the amount of hours available that this game demands... also, monthly subscriptions are no fun. I did love the game though back in the day

@spoochy: You mean like logging in for an hour to do some of the roulettes or whatever else you feel like doing? Yeah, huge time investment. This is an mmo and lots of people spend hours grinding away each day, but that's not a requirement. This game is as casual as it gets and grinding to get the newest gear has always been a waste of time anyway. Anything else you can achieve very casually with relatively small time investment. And you've got a whole 3-4 months to get through whatever new content has been released, since not much is happening in between. Not sure why people keep talking about modern mmos like this as if it was FF11 from back in the day.

@Atzenkiller: It sounds like things have changed with this game, or the people that were leading me around we just making it a grind. That's good to know. If I can afford a monthly subscription maybe it's worth taking another look.

@spoochy: It's never been any different. It's just a matter of what you choose to focus on. Like I've mentioned there's plenty of folks who do the hardcore raids every week and who grind for tomes so they can buy the beast gear over a period of serveral weeks. And for those people this is a very important part, even if just a few months later that top gear they got will get replaced by something better again, making all the time they've spent on it a waste of time.

If you haven't played the game in a long time, then there should be plenty of content for you to get through now, so that's the best time to get back into the game anyway. Once you've done all that, then there might not be much left, in which case you can just take a break again. Not like there's any reason to keep playing this game for months and years non stop. You don't miss anything if you stop playing. Or you might still find stuff you enjoy. For me for example leveling other classes has been the main reason why I'm still playing the game and keep coming back to it. Until I eventually get bored of it and take a break again.

But all the boring grinding is just a waste of time and gear doesn't matter at all. Get whatever you need to get access to all the new content and you're good. If you don't care about any hardcore content anyway, which is what requires a bit more dedication, then you'll also have no use for the best gear. Not that there is any use for it since you need to grind the hardest content for weeks to get the best gear sets. At which point there'll be nothing left anymore to use it for anyway.
