Final Fantasy 14 Free Trial Now Includes Entire Base Game And First Expansion

FFXIV's Heavensward expansion features many of the game's high points, and now it's free along with higher level caps and more content.

Along with the latest major update, the Square Enix MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV (on PC and PS4) expanded its free trial offering in a big way. Revealed during the latest FFXIV Letter from the Producer livestream, patch 5.3 includes the free trial moving onto the entire base game (A Realm Reborn) and the first expansion pack (Heavensward). Players are able to access all the playable content that comes with both games, which extends into Heavensward's post-launch content that leads into the follow-up expansion Stormblood.

This also means players are able to go up to level 60 for all the classes/jobs available through Heavensward--this now includes the Dark Knight, Machinist, and Astrologian for a total of 13 classes/jobs and their corresponding questlines as well. Additionally, free trial players can create a character of the Au Ra race (and choose between the Xaela and Raen clans), who were introduced in the first expansion. Previously, the free trial only granted access to part of the base game, limiting players to level 35 and the quests that were available up to that point.

Both games, A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, are essentially be free to play. There are no limits on play time or playable content; however, most restrictions on features you can access remain the same. For example, you cannot assemble parties on your own, use the market board, or join a free company (aka guild) under the free trial. To access the full feature set, you need to subscribe to FFXIV. An important thing to note is that you will retain access to A Realm Reborn and Heavensward when you subscribe; there is no need to purchase them anymore.

Heavensward is commonly referred to as a major high point for FFXIV; the story hits its stride and gets deeper as it depicts the complicated history and politics between a corrupt theocracy and society of dragons while putting you in a role to enact change. Environments are much larger and varied, and dungeons and boss fights are kicked up a notch. But don't overlook A Realm Reborn--update 5.3 also includes a streamlined version of the base game which cuts down on repetitive main quests. You'll also now have access to its excellent raid content.

The Live Letter stream gave much more detail into what's coming next for FFXIV, including a glimpse into the next entry in the Nier Automata crossover raid series called YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse. You can catch up with our highlights of the Shadowbringers 5.3 update.

Wow this is generous.

Going from level 35 cap in ARR to having full HW content to level 60 is MASSIVE. Like, weeks worth of gameplay (unless you're just grind rushing one class skipping everything; if so why are you even playing FFXIV?).

I keep a F2P account to logon casually and talk to people I don't have added outside of game, and this just opens up so much more possibility to enjoy that account if I ever feel like running dungeons or crafting.

May have to reload my trial then. I played up to level 8-10, I think, but couldn't really get into it for some reason. Maybe having a bit more wiggle room will help it click for me.

@lionheartssj1: The early game is kind of really boring unfortunately. The skills don't start feeling good till around 60 in most cases. Story of ARR is also a bit predictable and eh ok for me. HW and beyond was friggin awesome imo though.

I would love to start playing this again on my old account as I never beat the game - but I bet that they will not let you use a previous account to play the free trial - even if it never made it as far as the free trial allows.

I suspect you will have to use a new email address to do this trial if you already have one registered and played the game previously.

@hexeh: same. Pisses me off. Bought the game years ago on PS4. Only played to like level 25 and got bored. Would love to give it another try but, since I paid for the game.... I cannot play it free till 35 (currently) like anyone else can. It turned me all the way off from the game.

@KingWormer: Their tech is still archaic as all hell. Same thing happened to me years ago as an old 1.0 player, even on my alt 1.0 account I never paid anything on.

Sadly I don't see it improving anytime soon.. hasn't since 2014. I mean, they did just revamp the cash shop into a new site.. and it still doesn't have a search function. *shrug*

Would the free trial be good enough to enjoy without the intention of joining the subscription?

@thomaswmak: If you play games for story: Yes.

If you play games for the experience, to take things slow and enjoy your time: Yes.

If you play games to ignore story and skip to endgame raiding: Find another game.

Not that it doesn't exist, but FFXIV is as story driven as SWTOR, so ignoring it means ignoring 80% of what the game offers. The old free trial offered a good amount of content gameplay wise if you fall into the first 2 categories.. and now this revamped trial offers literal weeks of content if you're especially into #2.
