Now Playing: How Shadowbringers Morphs Final Fantasy 14’s Identity | E3 2019

Final Fantasy XIV Online currently offers cross-play support between PlayStation 4 and PC, but one of the reasons the game hasn't released on Xbox One yet is because Microsoft apparently won't allow cross-play for the MMO. Game director Naoki Yoshida told wccftech that he recently spoke with Xbox boss Phil Spencer and informed him that Square Enix is "prepared to do cross-play any any time." However, Microsoft isn't budging, it seems.

"Two months ago, I discussed with Phil Spencer. I have explained this before but we are prepared to do crossplay at any time," Yoshida explained.

According to Yoshida, things like in-game chat and social networking in the form of creating and joining guilds are essential for MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV Online.

"I would like to have Microsoft change their regulations," Yoshida said.

Yoshida told GameSpot in March that Final Fantasy XIV needs to support cross-play to have its playerbases united and offer the best experience. That's currently possible on PS4 and PC, but not with other systems, which has presumably kept the game off Xbox and Nintendo systems so far.

Sony, as well as Nintendo, is beginning to allow cross-play with competing platforms for games like Fortnite and Rocket League, so it seems more likely than ever that Final Fantasy XIV comes to new platforms.

"Talks with platform-holders has been going on," Yoshida said about Microsoft, Nintendo, and Google. "The fundamental philosophy with Final Fantasy XIV is we want it on labels with cross-platform play with any devices, hardware possible," Yoshida said through a translator. "So as long as the regulations with the counterpart hardware companies ... we can actually pass that, then the possibility, the chance is quite high [of Final Fantasy XIV coming to Xbox and Nintendo systems].

The next expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online is Shadowbringers, which launches on July 2 (or sooner, depending on the version you buy). Square Enix is going big to promote the game, bringing on Tom Holland and Hannibal Buress for commercials hyping the expansion. We've now gotten the 5.0 patch notes for the big update that will release alongside Shadowbringers.

This has always been the story with Microsoft. They refuse cross play, and now when losing they want to look like angels by accusing the competition of doing what they themselves had been doing all along.

There has to be more to the story here. Spencer is all about cross-play these days. There must be some kind of other demands they are making or some way they are implementing it that Microsoft has a problem with. They've allowed cross-play on many games. Something is obviously making this one different. Spencer wouldn't have a problem with cross-play unless there was a reason for it - like forcing Xbox owners to buy PS+ or something like that. There is something missing in this story or in his story anyway. Spencer would not say no to cross play simply to be a jerk.

@bdrtfm: PS+ is not required to play this. It could be that Square is asking MS to not require Xbox Live Gold for it. Since they require it for all online games, free or not. It's also possible that MS doesn't want to give Square the freedom to patch at will that they need and have with PC/PS4.

@bdrtfm: I wonder if it may have to do with the subscription fee. Perhaps Microsoft doesn't want the game to have its own subscription on top of the one for Xbox Live?

@bdrtfm:

From other comments, if they're accurate, I'd infer that Spencer and Xbox are very open to cross-play, but not to cross-communication. For some games this works fine, for others its evidently a deal breaker.

Personally, I have no issue with a lack of cross communication. Basic functionality to "look for group" and possibly emotes for specific needed items are more than sufficient. I don't particularly like to see or hear what other people are saying when I'm trying to play a game, including a game with other people (unless it's specifically couch co op, for obvious reasons).

Like others have stated before. Phil is likeable. Phil talks a good game. But you read stuff like this knowing how true it is, and realize that all he does is talk like everything he does is good for gamers. Pshaw.

The 360 had FFXI along with PC and PS2. You didn't need XBL to play it. And here is where I think the issue is. We won't see it on X1 unless Square agrees to use XBL. No $ for MS in it otherwise. Just my opinion. Push for xplay is really a push in the toilet.

Both sides have issues on xplay to work out.

Doesn't make sense. I don't think this guy is high enough up the chain to know the real reason why. There may be fees involved, proprietary technology disclosed... Who knows. MS has been at the forefront of crossplay. Or maybe they know this crappy jrpg doesn't sell on their platform, so why bother?

Avatar image for sakaixx

@Vodoo: ffxiv is one of the most profitable mmo ever... and its the game director, pretty high up and please read the article he went meeting with phil

Avatar image for Vodoo

@sakaixx: Read the article. A game director is just that... A GAME director, not company director. What I was saying is there may be particulars behind the scenes that he's not privy to, just how the PlayStation team didn't know about a deal with Microsoft. And jrpg's are crappy on Western consoles. They don't do well. Maybe FF7 will be different, but most Xbox owners in general don't like Japanese games.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@Vodoo: in the meanwhile, did you missed the part where he spoke to phil spencer? One of THE vice president of microsoft and head of xbox? Oh yeah, you dont know cause you didnt read.

Also, FFXI was successful on xbox 360. Its the most succesful final fantasy ever in term of revenue before FFXIV... and its available on pc, ps2 and x360. No ps3 or ps4 at all.

That's interesting. Hasn't MS' new boss been criticizing Sony for not wanting cross play? And now they're the only reason why it's not happening for FF14? They could even use that for marketing purposes to promote their own crossplay between PC and Xbox, having to buy the game only once to be able to play it on both platforms and all that. And here everyone was picking on Sony for being against it at first until they eventually budged, but as it turns out MS is no different.

For MS you can't type / chat with other players in a MMO. Or join a guild/free company/ linkshell.

Few things lost in translation me thinks and most important facts are missing.

A real translator should have been hired.

Final Fantasy 11 was crossplay between X360 and PS3,wasnt it?

Isnt Dauntless crossplay? Its a Monster Hunter-like game,a big world,a place/town to search for/talk to party members plattformunrelated?!

So,what are the details preventing FF14 to come to Xbox+Nintendo now?

Avatar image for darkelf83
darkelf83

@sladakrobot: FFXIV doesn't use PS+ and likely Square doesn't want to use Live Gold. Unfortunately MS probably won't budge on this. Dauntless and other Free-to-play games, according to Reddit and other sources, require XBLG. So much for Phil's big push for cross play.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@darkelf83: lol one game doesnt make it to the crossplay list and all off sudden Phil is the bad guy...be real.

Its like everyone is pissed coz Phil supported the crossplay idea lately and Sony was blocking it on all fronts and everyone is waiting just for a story like this to say: YEAH,WHATS GOING ON PHIL???

Thats too cheap

It's also come up a few times this year. Tell Phil to put his money where his mouth is. How can you trash talk Sony while denying the very thing you're talking about? You can bet, just like Sony, it's all about money.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@darkelf83: i trashtalk Sony coz developers OPENLY said Sony is blocking their games to become crossplay. That was before Rocket League and after.

After immense pressure Sony changed its stance (we want to protect kids making it sound that Microsoft AND Nintedo doesnt lol) but only to big names like Fortnite and Rocket League.

The new Dauntless has crossplay but its an Epic game like Fortnite but small unknow devs are out of luck.

Devs of Wargroove reached Sony to their small game become crossplay to PS4 and the answer was"it aint happening". Look that up.

And btw...this is about SE and MS and not Sony. I mentioned Sony i my post above to describe the picture of ppl reacting to this story and,oh my,i hit a nerve

Avatar image for siritokakyou

@sladakrobot: Once you declare something and having just one thing that contradict to it, then your words mean nothing and people won't trust you. MS already mentioned "happy crossplaying" for many times so people should expect you to keep your words. It's like "We give Halo series for free to everyone" but "Halo 2 is $60 buy-only for unknown reason". So before they keep going at Sony and blabbing about doing crossplay, they better take a look at themselves and their terms/policies first, otherwise it's just all big talk and nothing more + reputation damaged.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@sladakrobot: FF11 was originally released for the PS2, not the 3. Back then Sony didn't even have an online infrastructure as they do now, which is part of why they were hesitant to allow crossplay initially. So the game basically ran on SE's technology. Also it was a different time.

Avatar image for BigFeef

As I, and may others for that matter, have been saying for the longest time: Microsoft is all for cross-play... as long as it's on their terms. That others were calling them the champions of cross-play was hilarious at best considering that they spent the better part of a decade shutting down cross-play attempts by both Sony and Valve.

This isn't about cross-play. Square Enix wants FFXIV to be able to play online without the user needing an XBox Live Gold subscription. This is what it's always been about.

Avatar image for imajinn

@Elranzer: It happened with FFXI, why can't it with XIV?

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@Elranzer: Would that really be the issue if they're still getting their share from the game's profits? Sony seems to have had no issues with it.

Avatar image for Elranzer

@Atzenkiller: Sony made an exception in their PS4 PSN policy for FF14 (PS3 didn’t have this policy). Microsoft made the same exception for FF11 for Xbox 360.

They don’t seem to be budging for FF14 and Xbox One, and haven’t for years. You’d think they would, since Square Enix has been more Xbox-friendly this generation.

For those confused, Microsoft and Xbox are fine with Cross-Play as long as the two sides can't communicate with each other directly, only play. For shooters and action games this is good enough with ingame tools like pings and emotes.

FFXIV is an actual MMO with a world, and a massive player base to potentially interact with, so those kinds of limitations are obviously not acceptable.

Avatar image for Decoy77

This is about Xbox Live Gold subscriptions.

Avatar image for whiteheartx

Avatar image for darkelf83
darkelf83

@Aldarish: That's just what people said because of Sony's stance at the time. They had already made agreements with Square. MS won't agree with how Square wants to operate and now it seems communication online between players may be an issue as well. Not sure.

It may also have some things to do with XBLG and the patching process.

Thanks for reminding everyone that there are no saints in the corporate world.

That said, this is a Makuch article. It doesn't clearly point out if the problem is hardware related or MS related as the language implies both at some points. I'm not sure if MS simply lacks the infrastructure to allow it or MS is just blocking it. Something could have been lost in translation.
