Fighting Wars in Medal of Honor: Warfighter

2010's Medal of Honor reboot was a good shooter, but it didn't set any new standards for the genre. After 18 months, can the sequel Warfighter fare any better?

The Game Developers Conference is fast becoming the place where EA unveils its marquee first-person shooter of the year. Last year, it was Battlefield 3 and a memorable 15-minute demo that gave us a first glimpse at not only the game, but also DICE's now-ubiquitous game engine Frostbite 2. Compared to Battlefield, Medal of Honor: Warfighter's unveiling this year didn't quite have the same impact, but thankfully for shooter fans, it did throw up some hints as to how it could advance the genre.

Like the first Medal of Honor, you will play as Tier 1 operatives; the difference is that this time, they will be from around the world rather than just the US. One common global terror threat will bring many different countries and forces together and, in the process, a multinational theme to the game. The other key word is "authenticity," as the team has once again worked with actual Tier 1 operatives to ensure that all the missions in the game are based on real-world events.

The story takes place directly after the last Medal of Honor, with Preacher returning in a central role. Richard Farrelly, the game's creative director, promises that the game will offer a glimpse into the personal lives of these Tier 1 operatives, including the impact their jobs have on their families. While we've yet to see how this will pan out, it sounds like a recognition of the success of such films as Hurt Locker, which pack more of an emotional punch than standard action fare.

Our demo was based on a mission in the Philippines, with the US special forces teaming up with their Philippine counterparts to take on local terrorists. The mission started in a large, open building that had been flooded with water. The section was exactly what you'd expect from a modern big-budget first person shooter: intense firefights punctuated by even more intense high-impact moments, such as explosions that tear through parts of a building. One of the more interesting mechanics was door breaching: you have the option of opening doors either by kicking them, using C4, or first tossing in a flash grenade. We saw how hostages were saved using the flashbang, with the now-obligatory slow-motion breaching sequence allowing you to pick off the dazed terrorists and save the hostages.

The demo then continued onto water, as we climbed aboard a jet boat and mounted the turret to fend off more terrorists that were situated on the roofs of houses. It was another bombastic action set piece that showed off Frostbite 2's destruction technology, particularly when one building collapsed and caused big, disruptive waves. The demo ended with the two boats being picked up by helicopter, with the operatives hooking them on as they flew off heroically into the distance.

Of course, multiplayer will be Warfighter's primary selling point for many, and Goodrich had some interesting revelations about this section of the game. He claims that they're taking a page out of the FIFA book by appealing to people's sense of national pride. There will be 12 international Tier 1 operatives from 10 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Australia, and Poland. Goodrich expects that players will want to represent their country in the game's "Blue on Blue" mode, which he says is essentially good guys versus good guys. The early trailers for the game focus on the almost superhuman abilities of Tier 1 operatives, so when Goodrich says that it will settle similar schoolyard arguments as to who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman, it doesn't actually sound that far fetched.

What we saw of Medal of Honor: Warfighter certainly doesn't break the mold of the military shooter, but some of the developer's aims look to be fairly lofty. The game's release date has already been tied down for October 23 worldwide, with the now-standard Limited Edition available across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

@mhaed Well said, the best MOH in the series is the original on PS1, MOH Underground was crap, it was different, from level design, pacing etc. Second best MOH is Fronline, the first one on PS2, then then next MOH, Rising Sun, was once again crap. Then European Assualt, was crap. Haven't played a MOH since EuroAssualt, would love to get back in the series, but I jus can't see it being as good or better then BF3, so idk, have to keep on eye this one and hope for the best

Really enjoyed the campaign on the first one. Didn't really play the multiplayer. I will look into buying it. I also think it would be bad arse. If, the developers would add a special level where you can play as Seal Team 6 with reenactments in the capture or kill of Osama bin ladin.

Seriously, they need to add the Canadian Military in some of these games. I know we're just "Peace Keepers" but whose to say we can't shoot terrorists for fun?

awesome another modern military shooter full of scripted special events to add drama. @stan_boyd you talk like thats a bad thing... Im super excited, cant wait for this game and the new BF3 map packs. I love Frostbite 2 engine. Someone should use Frostbite 2 to make a zombie shooter. Just imagine the look of zombies in Frostbite 2

@Psycold @KO1029 You 2 are right Allied assault will be ever one of the best shooters of all time. But when i bought last MOH i thought i could say that about it as well as i used to love MOH before COD but sadly i found the game was linear and it was like trying to combine COD with BF and it didn't come out good. I can't say i'll be buying the new MOH until i make sure it's really something new.

as long as its better than the first ill give it a try. the mp tried too hard to be like bf and cod and didnt do enough to make it stand out from those two games. and the sp... well it was just awful. I do have high hopes for this game though so dont let me down EA. P.S. MoH Rising sun is still one of my favorite games along with allied assault, it would be awesome to see them come out on the xbl market place or psn store

If anyone else is old enough to remember and have played Allied Assault, they would know how incredible a MOH game CAN BE, and if they played the last game in conjunction with Allied Assault, then like me I'm quite sure they felt disappointed. I appreciate that they didn't want massive set pieces like storming Omaha or anything out of COD, but going spec-ops and having every mission be silent and in the dark was really boring and anything but memorable. Also the new game was one of the most linear gaming experiences of the past decade.

I'm glad they have a "blue on blue" option, as I hated playing as a terrorist half the time. This would imply that there is still a mode where you do (play as the "opposition"). Why split the online community like that for a game that might only have 5K players a few months after release?

Pre-order at no extra cost? Well I'm sure as hell in. I preferred MoH over Battlefield and COD (strange I know), but the gunplay itself just seemed to be solid. Better story too considering it was based on real events - Call of Duty has just become an unbelievable blockbuster franchise. I can't believe I'm saying this... but EA.... take my money :|

I actually am a big fan of MOH, more so than COD or Battlefield. I'll be watching this with interest, especially as I found the MP in MOH much more interesting and entertaining than either of the two FPS "kings" - COD and BF.

Medal of Honor, Battlefield and COD, all of the series lets me experience War and fights, upfront, which I cant in Real Life. If we all look at these games, seperately, in their own Sandboxes, there will be no fanboys anymore, and just people appreciating Games and the work done by these people. I dont see anybody comparing, LOTR and Harry Potter, so why these games. I would still go and buy this, and appreciate the War experience and knowledge these games give me.

Developers need to learn that Call of Duty is popular because of multiplayer, not the campaign. Copying those slow motion, rappeling or "un-interactive cut scenes" moments will get them nowhere. Slow motion and authenticity doesn't seem to fit together.
