FIFA 17 Cover Vote Starts Today

You have the option of voting for one of four footballers for this year's FIFA cover.

Lionel Messi has been FIFA's main cover star for four years, but this time, the box won't feature him at all. FIFA 17's cover vote begins today, giving you four options to choose from: Manchester United's Anthony Martial, Real Madrid's James Rodriguez, Chelsea's Eden Hazard, and Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus.

There are several ways you can vote for a cover athlete. You can start by going to the official website, where you'll be able to choose which of the four soccer players should grace FIFA 17's box art. Once you've chosen who you want to vote for, you can then earn extra votes by sharing your vote on social media. Additionally, you can earn FIFA Ultimate Team items and card packs as you get more votes.

"James, Martial, Hazard, and Reus represent exciting, attacking football and epitomize the innovative play that fans can expect in FIFA 17," EA Sports senior producer Nick Channon said. "We're excited to see fans rally around their favorite players and see who they select as the cover star for the franchise and the footballer who will represent FIFA 17 globally."

The vote lasts until July 19, while a winner will be revealed later in the month.

FIFA 17 releases for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on September 27. The PS3 and 360 versions won't come with all of this year's features, however, as last-gen console players won't get to experience the new story mode.

EA Sports titles normally holds votes to determine its cover athletes. NHL 17's cover will be adorned with St. Louis Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko. However, Madden 17 decided to skip the cover vote this year and named New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski its star.

"With this election year upon us, we don't want you to lose sleep over another big decision," EA said about the lack of a cover vote. "So, we decided to take the pressure off this year and hand-select someone for the job."

@Keaze_: Is that sarcasm? James Rodriguez at least play for one of the most famous and successful Football teams in the world and you've never heard of him? I understand the Martial case because he's relatively new but the other three pretty well known in the world.

@ltjohnnyrico: I live in Canada, actually, and I've never in my life met someone who is genuinely interested in soccer. We do have a team in my city that is part of... the international soccer association (no idea what the league is called), but they never make the news because people are just not very interested.

But I understand there is a huge worldwide craze about soccer and that's perfectly fine, to each their own.

The main sport here is Hockey. Everyone is gaga about it. Personally I don't really watch it but I stay informed, and if I happen to catch it on tv it's very entertaining.

If I feel the need to play a sports game it's always hockey.

@Keaze_: they arent heard in america. trust me sth america, asia, europe, africa they know who they all are. They are common names. and FYI about the boxers below, they are big names and the main men who follow sports briefly know who GGG, Kahn and Canelo are. Die hard fans know for sure. Women no boxing isnt big for them anywhere

@Keaze_: You're not the only one, none of these guys are super stars. The era of Messi, Ronaldo, Beckham is passing, people that good only come once in a generation. These new guys are mediocre at best,

Its the same with boxing, the guys that are headlining now, are virtually unknown to most people. Like, Canelo, Kahn, Golovkin, who knows these guys outside of boxing fanatics.

Every sport has its heyday, then can only go down in talent.

@kazeswen: Messi and CRonaldo play in a pretty average generation. If you compare this gens top players to the one before with zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldiniho, Henry, Viera, Figo, Schevchenko, Del Piero, Ballack etc etc there is a massive gap.

Same with boxing, boxing is actually pretty dead right now. MMA being part of its downfall.

@no_one: That's why these new guys are pretty unknown to most people outside of soccer.

People get offended when us regular folks have no idea who these people are but its just the way it is, super stars come very rarely. If these four guys were remotely as famous as Ronaldo or Messi in their prime, then EA would not be holding a vote on who is the least unknown. When you have 4 guys that nobody knows, who you gonna pay your sponsorship dollars to?

Boxing is the same. When the top Heavy Weight Boxer is worst than the retired Lennox Lewis who himself was already a step down from the golden era, than of course nobody is gonna give shit.

Look at the middleweight division, the best boxer is Canelo, who lost his pants off against Mayweather a few years ago, so the best guy in boxing right now is light years worse then the best guys last generation. Even Mayweather is not considered the best.

The only thing boxing has going for it right now is Manny Pacquiao, he is the last super star of any sport of late. You can go anywhere in the world and mention him and people who hate boxing will still have heard of him.

@kazeswen: That's your opinion and I respect that but in Reus and Rodriguez case I disagree completely with you. They are talented and pretty well known in the football world, if you watched Copa America in USA you should see Rodriguez had the whole USA team in his pocket both games they played.

@kazeswen: I understand mate but in my point of view for example Rodriguez is one. You need to be a super star to play in Real Madrid and he was taken there for the amazing 2014 world cup he had.

@Geocross: If he was a super star I would know about him wouldn't I?

You need to be super star to headline major HBO fights, but nobody knows who Canelo is either.

Other than boxing fans, who the hell knows Canelo and Golovkin, both are considered super stars of their sport at present day, but they might as well be nobodies.

@kazeswen: Again I get your point but why are we here? I suppose we are here because this is about FIFA, football, soccer as you call it... if you like FIFA you know about football at least the minimum about it... If I don't like or know something about for example HBO fights as you mentioned, then I wouldn't be talking about it... but hey! you're right as well

@Geocross: I guess we can agree that true super stars of any sport are few and far between.

Stars that are known outside of their sport are very rare indeed.

My mother knows, Beckham, Ronaldo, and Pacquiao, and she is neither a fan of soccer or boxing. Those super stars come once every few generations.

@sakaixx: To be well known you need to be known internationally, especially in America.

Ask anyone on the planet Earth if they know Ali, Tyson, Hollyfield, then ask the same people if they know Canelo, Kahn, Golovkin.

Famous is famous, there is no two ways about it. I know Messi, Ronaldo, and Beckham and I hardly ever watch soccer.

Either you're an international super star that is world renowned, or you are someone who only people who care for the sport knows.

@sakaixx: I'm talking about famous. The fact that I don't give a shit about football or soccer or whatever and I still know Ronaldo, Messi and Beckham means these people are famous.

The fact that you need to explain tome who these guys are means they are not famous.

Famous is Famous. I shouldn't ever need you or anyone who likes soccer to tell me who someone is, if they were truly famous, I would already know them.

The fact that everyone on Earth knows who Ali, Tyson and Hollyfield is means they are famous.

Famous is Famous, famous people don't need introductions. You shouldn't have to tell me who these people are I should already know them, regardless if I like soccer or not.

Every heard of Bruce Lee? Do I need to explain who he is? Exactly.

@kazeswen: think it's fair to say there are levels of "famous". yes, Ali, ruce Lee and Tyson are, of course, internationally recognised global superstars, and you could certainly add Pele to that very short list (pretty sure you've heard of him!).

below that there are more levels. for example you could tell me the top 3 basketball, baseball or american football stars and I'd be extremely surprised if i'd heard of more than 1 of them. I've never heard of Canelo and the only Kahn I know is the old German goalkeeper, though I assume you're not referring to him.

having said that, I am into footy (as I'm English) and, frankly, I couldn't give a toss who they stick on the front of the box. I switched from FIFA to PES last year and have no intention of switching back and even if I did, who's on the cover doesn't concern me.

@mpl911: I think you are truly famous when you are so good at the sport that people outside of the sport starts to talk about you, that's famous, famous.

You ask me to name a basketball player, I say Michael Jordan, baseball player, Babe Ruth, Hockey, Wayne Gretzky, Boxing, Ali, Soccer Pele etc, etc.

The fact that these guys haven't broken out of their sport in fame shows that they are not superb.

@kazeswen: The biggest stars in football just now are: Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Bale and Ibrahimovic.

Where I think you make a mistake is in thinking the most famous are the best, this is not always the case. Ibrahimovic is good example of this today, really good but not the best. Beckham is another, he wasn't even the best English player of his generation(top players tend to give that to Scholes). The best players when Beckham was around were: Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo(Brazilian)and Ronaldinho but none were as famous as Beckham was/is.

As to the current cream of the crop, Ronaldo is losing his mantle to Bale, Messi is heading to jail and Ibrahimovic is on his way out. There are loads of young exciting players coming(Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Morata, Sanchez etc) through who could step up to the top yet we are forgetting players who do the dull stuff and don't get the same recognition as above, I'm thinking the likes of Kroos, Rakitic, Modric etc

Essay over :)

@kyelo: Ali was never the best, he never threw a single bodyshot, he didn't have a big punch, but its his character, personality and his entertaining presence that made him legendary,

Also Mike Tyson was never the best either, he never used the jab, weaved too much and was open to uppercuts, and had little reach.

What I'm saying is that being the best technically doesn't equate to being legendary,

Famous people aren't necessarily the best, they are usually the most entertaining and the most charismatic, also the most unique.

Was Pele the best, was Ruth the best, was Gretzsky the best? They were all unique, charismatic, and entertaining, but the best, I don't know. Is Mann Pacquiao the best? He lost to Mayweather, but he's much more famous then Mayweather will ever be, think on that.

Essay over ;)

@kazeswen: yeah, fair enough - I'll give you Jordan, Ruth and Gretzky...they are all legendary, granted...but if you named any current baseball, basketball or american football players players Iike Anthony Martial (he's only a kid tbh, probably only known in the UK (where he plays) and France (where he's from)), James Rodriguez, Eden Hazard, and Marco Reus are to football I would imagine they will be a lot less known...and certainly not internationally famous.

@mpl911: You really need to be superb and very charismatic at your sport to become internationally famous outside of your sport.

Not many sports nowadays have people that famous. Manny Pacquiao is the last guy to do that in any recent sport. My mom, whose never watched a boxing match in her life, was mentioning Pacquiao to me one day, she says "Oh yeah its that Philipino boxing champ, I heard he's good", that's when you know you've hit that scale of international renown.

Maybe one of these guys will one day become that famous, who knows.

@kazeswen: Couldn't agree more...and that's funny about your mum!

These guys aren't the top of the pile when it comes to football, but think FIFA are trying to look beyond the obvious - it's too easy to stick Messi / Ronaldo / Suarez on the front again - think they are trying to do something different to get ahead of the pack. If PES stick Suarez on the front and FIFA go for, say, Martial, in 7 months time if Martial slams in a hat-trick against Barcelona in the semi-final of the European cup, thereby knocking Suarez and his team out, it may just lead to some more sales...which is, after all, the only thing they really care about.

Anyway - game on, etc. Peace.
