For the first time in the history of the FIFA series, a woman will be featured on the game's US cover.

Electronic Arts announced on Monday that US soccer star Alex Morgan, who helped lead the United States Women's National Team to victory in this year's World Cup, will grace the cover of FIFA 16. She's there alongside Lionel Messi, who is the global FIFA cover star.

"It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of FIFA," Morgan said in a statement. "I know people all over the world play this game and I'm really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women's soccer. And now to share the cover with today's greatest player is surreal."

Today's announcement comes after some fans were asking for a member of the US Women's National Team to have a spot on the cover.

EA also confirmed today that Canadian Women's National Team captain Christine Sinclair will be featured on the cover for the Canadian version of FIFA 16. It was previously announced that the Australian edition of FIFA 16 will also feature a woman, Steph Catley, on its cover.

FIFA 16 is the first game in franchise history to feature women's teams. Twelve of the top Women's National teams are represented in the game: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the US.

The FIFA 16 release date is set for September 22 across PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
