FIFA 14 is 2013's UK Christmas number one

FIFA 14 beats Call of Duty: Ghosts by 17,000 copies.

FIFA 14 has taken the title of Christmas number one in the UK for 2013.

An 18 per cent rise in sales last week saw the game finish 17,000 units ahead of Call of Duty: Ghosts in the chart week before December 25. FIFA 14 is now the eighth UK Christmas number one for the long-running football series.

EA last took the title in 2008 with FIFA 09, with the spot being held predominantly by Call of Duty titles since the launch of Modern Warfare in 2007. Since then, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Black Ops II have all enjoyed the coveted number one finish.

Sales board Gfk Chart-Track noted that EA has taken 14 of the Christmas number one spots since it started tracking game sales 29 years ago. EA and Activision have jostled for the festive fiefdom since 2003, with only one game from another publisher--The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim--taking the title in 2011.

Hefty sales also helped Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag jump from fifth to third, with Battlefield 4 and Lego Marvel Super Heroes following in fourth and fifth.

The rest of the UK top 10 is made up of GTA 5 in sixth, Just Dance 2014 in seventh, Need for Speed: Rivals in eighth, Killzone: Shadow Fall in ninth, and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition at tenth.

FIFA 14 is a pretty good football game. Not perfect, but many times better than the competition anyway. USA guys please don't forget football is the most popular sport in the World.

The multiplayer components of EA's games are very good, of course there are a lot of bugs, but once you get into it, its really addictive. Shame, EA screws it up most of the time.

Cos football is the largest sport around the world. Plus I hate EA severs. The amount of profit they are making, should really sort out online severs so I can have a match on ps4 without EA f***** up during gameplay nd match-making severs.

Why is that that EA can still not get creative with replays? It's still the same old boring angles that we've had since Fifa 10 (possibly earlier, this is where I started) When I watch real football on TV, the replays look nothing like the shitty ones the Fifa series has.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Whether or not one thinks FIFA is good, everyone can agree that it definitely needs to be polished up. The PC version still feels like playing FIFA08 or something.

Well, this is certainly a huge surprise!

Seriously, though. I just don't get the appeal of a game where you can basically do what it offers in real life (without going to jail).

Such a couple of extremely innovative iterations, rewarding the series for thinking completely outside the box and presenting innumerable changes in the current iterations...

Yeah right... Like if that ever mattered, it makes me sick to see people waste money every year on the same game. I love to play FIFA with friends, but there's not a chance in hell I'm paying for the same game every year.. Maybe if it was just some 10€, 20€ at the most to update the teams...But 60€ for the same game? No thanks.

I just wish the casual market would understand that they will keep pooping out 60€ iterations until people stop buying millions and millions of copies. By then, they'll be forced to either sell it at a lower price, or just make real innovations that are worth the price tag...

<< LINK REMOVED >> But the gameplay has changed. It's extremely broken but it has changed dramatically. Through balls being OP because defenders default is to mark too close, you are able to use your body weight more for positioning, goalkeepers have to have more skill to save shots etc. Modes have been updated i.e be a pro having a better online structure.

It's a football game there is only so many dramatic changes they can make. Also they make the best football game, so it's up to other developers to make a better football game. Konami has done it before but most companies have given up because they know it would be hard to make a better game.

And I know it's the best football game. PES 14 suck so bad it's painful to play. I stopped playing PES in 12, and to see how bad it is currently makes me sad... But still, if consumers would simply stop buying new iterations, they would be forced to sell at a lower price. We all know we are mostly paying 60€ for the team updates..

Not suprised, but I still think last years FIFA was better than this one. They still need to address so many problems with the gameplay that have been there for years, but this year they introduced new ones! Things like the ball just hitting the player you're trying to pass to and the ball bounces miles away from him, players not even trying to get the ball under control and simply running straight past it, etc. I'm hoping next year will be more refined with A LOT less of these stupid problems.

The UK loves some futbol, eh? I think the real surprise is that it only edged out CoD by 17000 copies. I expected a wide margin, to be honest.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You definitely didn't play both Fifa 13 and 14. Fifa 14 is the best Football simulator so far, the weight and balance interactions, the ball physics and the goalkeeper behavior are brilliant. Sure there are some problems and glitches, mainly in the online mode, but the game is great! If they just revamped the graphics (yeah, it looks like s***t even on X1/PS4) and corrected some bugs, the game would be a masterpiece.

Sad for the industry that top games on the charts are yearly rehashes of old games using mostly old resources from previous installments.

17,000 ahead - so Ghosts is the real winner here since Fifa was included for free with 1-2million Xbox One's & a large portion of those people haven't even registered there codes or just sell them on ebay for £20.

But then, Ghosts is a shameful excuse of a game.... So, let's just keep saying Fifa (of which I have zero interest in EA's latest milk machine) won.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> wouldn't surprise me if it was near to the 1mil mark, 2mil was me being sloppy - after all, everyone who ordered the Day One package had a free game which was either Forza which sold out in a couple of hours so probably not many of them at all.... or Fifa, which everyone I know has so far, but whatever the numbers it's certain at only a 17,000 lead.. that bundle is what's put Fifa on top.
