FIFA 14 getting free Ultimate Team World Cup update and new mode on PS4 and Xbox One

FIFA 14 will get a free update next week, bringing with it the new FIFA 14 Ultimate Team: World Cup mode. It'll be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on May 29.

The World Cup FUT mode will run independently of FIFA 14 Ultimate Team, but revolves around the familiar ground rules: you build a fantasy team of players from around the world, only now it's all based around the 32 nations competing in the upcoming tournament. Your starter squad is boosted with cards randomly gained from packs that can be purchased with both in-game gold and real money.

Card packs bought in this mode will not be usable in the normal FIFA 14 Ultimate Team mode, and can also not be traded with other players. But EA says that every FUT World Cup pack will also dish out a regular Gold pack--the ones you're used to--for use in the regular FIFA 14 Ultimate Team mode.

The new mode also differentiates itself slightly from regular FUT by tweaking the chemistry mechanic, which is the key to a well-built team. Previously players needed to be positioned next to others from the same team, country, or league, but in this new World Cup mode it depends on country and governing confederation.

Elsewhere there's official logos, kits, the match ball, and the Estadio do Marcana stadium, and players can take part in both offline and online tournaments.

EA also adds that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of FIFA 14 will receive a World Cup Kick Off mode that allows players to play matches using the World Cup kits as any of the national teams competing. There's no full world cup tournament coming, though, as that's saved for the PS3/360 versions of the official tie-in game.
