The Final Fantasy gamer is a force to be reckoned with, as Square Enix fully knows. However, even the Tokyo-based developer may have been slightly taken aback by the sheer volume of outcry following its reveal that Final Fantasy XIII won't make it outside of Japan on any platform in 2009. Don't call it a delay, though; the trailer announcing the 2009 release window was shown in Japan as part of the Tokyo Game Show, after all.

With the Final Fantasy faithful in North America and Europe twiddling their thumbs until 2010--at the earliest--one question worth asking is: What is going on with FFXIII, anyway? The answer to that query may be less than a week away, as Square Enix has updated its official FFXIII Web site with a countdown timer set to expire on Wednesday at 8 a.m. PST.

Along with the timer, the site bears a teaser message of questionable value. "The countdown has begun," reads the site. "A new vision will soon be revealed to the world. Register now to ensure you're there for the unveiling."

Of course, just because a developer is offering up a nugget of tantalizing info, that doesn't mean it's going to be deets that most people want to hear. Not too long ago, Konami was teasing its latest, greatest Metal Gear offering, igniting a firestorm of speculation ranging from Metal Gear Solid 4 confirmed for the Xbox 360 to a third Metal Gear Acid being en route. As it would turn out, the teaser was for a new iPhone/iPod game, Metal Gear Solid Touch.
