FF IX Hits Japan in a Big Way

Over 2 million copies of Final Fantasy IX ships upon its release in Japan.

According to Square of Japan the initial shipment of Final Fantasy IX was 2.6 million copies in Japan for its July 7 release. The company plans to ship another 200,000 copies this week and over 3 million in Japan by the end of 2000. Japanese gamers began camping out long before the game went on sale at most retailers at 7am Tokyo time on Friday. In fact, the game reached over 1 million copies reserved in 17 days during its pre-launch ordering period.

Square representatives point out that actual sell-through figures, the number sold to consumers, have not been released by Square of Japan or DigiCube.
