Fish tale.

While Jason Statham has starred in numerous entertaining action thrillers over the years, as well as co-starring in the last couple of Fast & Furious movies, until now he was yet to headline a big-budget blockbuster. That changes this summer, with the release of the shark thriller The Meg. A first trailer has now been released.

The Meg is based on the best-selling 1997 novel, and it stars Statham as an expert diver who faces off against a 70-foot monster shark which is causing mayhem off the coast of China. Statham was in fact a competitive diver before he moved into acting, and the trailer delivers plenty of massive CG shark action alongside some snappy dialogue and Bobby Darin's classic song "Beyond The Sea." Check it out above.

Now Playing: The Meg - Trailer

The Meg is directed by Jon Turteltaub, who is best known for the National Treasure movies, plus '90s hits such as 3 Ninjas, Cool Runnings, and While You Were Sleeping. It also stars Rainn Wilson (The Office, Star Trek Discovery), Li Bingbing (Transformers: Age of Extinction), and Ruby Rose (John Wick: Chapter 2). It hits theaters on August 10.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Statham spoke about preparing for his role. "On the early stages of the prep, we took a trip to Fiji, and we went diving with some bull sharks," he said. "They hand-feed them and it's a spectacular thing to see. These things are three meters in length, huge big things. There were 20 or 30 of these things, and they were hand-feeding [them] big tuna heads, and we got very, very close, and it was a spectacular moment. To swim in close proximity to a big, three-meter shark, is to be recommended to all and everyone."

"It's funny, because you get anxiety when you're on the boat," he continued. "But once you get in the ocean, things take a very different turn. You get very relaxed, and when you're in their environment, it's quite a tranquil sort of thing, the anxiety goes away completely. It's remarkable to experience."

In related news, Statham is set to star alongside Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming Fast and Furious spin-off focusing on the characters Hobbs and Shaw. However, it is unknown whether Johnson will return to the main series. Last week, Johnson hinted that, following his reported feud with co-star Vin Diesel, last year's Fate of the Furious might be his final movie in the franchise.
