FASA Studio KIA

Microsoft shutters Shadowrun and MechAssault developer, the final remnant of the once-mighty tabletop-RPG maker; half the staff "redeployed" to other MGS projects.

Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot that it has shut down its internal developer FASA Studio. The news first surfaced last night on the official forums for Shadowrun, the shop's PC and Xbox 360 shooter.

"It is my sad duty to announce that FASA Studio has officially closed its doors," wrote FASA studio head Mitch Gitelman in a post. "Today was the official last day of employment for those of us who had not moved on to other positions within Microsoft Game Studios. While the rumors have been circulating forever, we chose to wait on an official announcement because we didn't want people's attention distracted from our last product, Shadowrun, a game we love."

Later, Microsoft reps gave further details on the closure. "Microsoft has redeployed more than half of the FASA employees throughout the Microsoft Game Studios division, strengthening MGS as a whole with their specialized talent developing a cross-platform game and overall experience as veteran world-class game developers," a rep said. "We are very proud of what the FASA team accomplished with Shadowrun, and we will continue to support the title."

Though both FASA and Microsoft corporate PR continue to talk up Shadowrun, the game wasn't the monster hit both parties had hoped for. After receiving middling reviews, the 360 version of the game sold just under 150,000 copies in the US between its May 29 release and July 31, according to the NPD Group. And although one of Shadowrun's main selling points was cross-platform play, the PC edition sold barely over 12,000 copies during the same period.

One of the greatest criticisms of Shadowrun, an online-focused multiplayer shooter, was how far it strayed from its source material. Namely, the densely plotted cyberpunk role-playing game Shadowrun, created by FASA Studio's former parent company, the famed pen-and-paper RPG company FASA Corporation. Founded in 1980, FASA Corp. created many classic franchises over the following two decades, three of which became video games: BattleTech, which inspired nearly two dozen MechWarrior and MechAssault games; Crimson Skies, the subject of PC and Xbox airborne shooters; and Shadowrun, which, prior to its most recent incarnation, inspired a Super Nintendo and Genesis game in the mid-1990s.

FASA Corp.'s game wing, FASA Interactive, was bought by Microsoft in 1999 and renamed FASA Studio. Stung by the decline of pen-and-paper RPGs, FASA Corp. closed down in 2001 and sold off its various properties. Microsoft retains the video game licenses for Crimson Skies, MechAssault, and Shadowrun, but hasn't revealed any future plans for the IPs. "We have no announcements at this time," a rep told GameSpot.

Shadowrun wasn't crappy dude... Most of the people that hate on it have never even played it... Huh joey? Gamespot's review was like they didn't play it... Leaving out features and aspects of gameplay like they didn't exist. I've had enough... It's bad enough having to listen to you kids trash talk on Halo 2... Now, your complaining studios to death!

So... a bunch of really cool people and there company are GONE because haters couldn't deal with Shadowrun being a FPS. The FPS was to gain interest in Shadowrun with gamers after all these years... It would have spawned other games, probably a RPG. Not to mention... Shadowrun is one of the best FPS games ever made. So it lacked alittle content... it's still really damn fun. This just goes to show everyone what load mouthed jerks we gamers can be. Someone's dream, FASA Studios is gone for no good reason. All you close minded people, you all should be ashamed of yourselves.

Mechassault 1 was great. For a while it was the best online game on the xbox. But part two was garbage because not only did it play like 'grand theft mech' but the maps dictated what mechs you could use, so instead of being able to play with your favorite machine, you had to settle for whatever you found sitting around the battlefield. Total garbage.

Shadowrun is the best competitive fps on a console since Halo 1 and easily superior to halo 2. It saddens me that very few reviewers see this. There is a reason MLG picked up this game and it isnt because the game is trash.

They should have been more faithful to the original Shadowrun rpg. Then I would have been more interested in it.

They should have done a much better job with Shadowrun. It could have been a great game, but they didn't put enough effort into it.

I'm betting this is due to Shadowrun's sales. "We are very proud of what the FASA team accomplished with Shadowrun, and we will continue to support the title."Yeah, I'm really buying that quote. Sarcasm aside it's a shame. Feels like a very EA-ish move, discard the company when they disappoint. At least some of the staff are getting jobs still, though it's a shame for those not getting "redeployed".

Shadowrun was an unfinished, unpolished piece of garbage. It was rushed out the door and it should come as no surprise to anyone that they are being shut down.

Glad to see them go. I've been a fan of FASA since the early days, but they've been churning out crap for a while now. Shadowrun and Battletech have plenty of good games left in them. Hopefully Microsoft will give them to some talented people who can make those good games happen.

Shadowrun was an okay game and nothing more. At least with FASA gone, we won't have to see anymore of those. Carve away the fat and serve the lean I always say.

I am quite depressed about this... Shadowrun was probably my favorite RPG world of all time, and the other stuff FASA did was pretty great, too. I don't really care for multiplayer shooters, so I didn't buy the game, but I was hoping for an RPG in the Shadowrun universe some day.

Shadowrun could have been so much more. Gamers like me were on the fence, cuz of a lack of game content, yet the game was full-priced. $70cdn for an online-only game with very few modes and character skins was and is kind of a rip-off.

Yeah, this wicked sucks....i wanted a new MechAssault game for the 360... :-( Crimson Skies was also a Boss game...i strayed away from Shadowrun, mainly because it wasn't selling...whats the point of playing a online game that has only sold about 162,000 total copies (360 and PC)....you think everytime you log on, everyone is going to be logged on? Nope...plus they could have done better on Shadowrun in a few ways.

Our last hope of getting a decent BattleTech game (Im talking about MechWarrior, not MechAssault) goes down the drain after this. The MW games from Fasa Interactive were absolutely awesome!!!! I really doubt that Micro$hit will take the BattleTech license and make something good out of it.

It's time for another Mechwarrior game. Chromehounds doesn't cut it. All of those people who know what a PPC is are really going to miss this. I just hope this isnt the last we see of Battletech.

i never played the table top shadow run - but from what i gather it was ruined by this game - i wished they'd stay true to the source ( from what I hear ) and kept it an online shooter/rpg like huxley. I think there may have been another outcome.

Hah! Thats what you get for not sticking even remotely close to the source material. Alienate your built in fanbase and then watch as your mediocre product implodes. There ya go.

@#$#, I was just starting to wonder what their next project would be. I was hoping for another Crimson Skies. They had done great work. Hopefully MS doesn't ruin these franchises or can them. (I am a Shadowrun fan and I liked the new game. Not what I expected but fun nonetheless.)
