FASA Studio KIA

Microsoft shutters Shadowrun and MechAssault developer, the final remnant of the once-mighty tabletop-RPG maker; half the staff "redeployed" to other MGS projects.

Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot that it has shut down its internal developer FASA Studio. The news first surfaced last night on the official forums for Shadowrun, the shop's PC and Xbox 360 shooter.

"It is my sad duty to announce that FASA Studio has officially closed its doors," wrote FASA studio head Mitch Gitelman in a post. "Today was the official last day of employment for those of us who had not moved on to other positions within Microsoft Game Studios. While the rumors have been circulating forever, we chose to wait on an official announcement because we didn't want people's attention distracted from our last product, Shadowrun, a game we love."

Later, Microsoft reps gave further details on the closure. "Microsoft has redeployed more than half of the FASA employees throughout the Microsoft Game Studios division, strengthening MGS as a whole with their specialized talent developing a cross-platform game and overall experience as veteran world-class game developers," a rep said. "We are very proud of what the FASA team accomplished with Shadowrun, and we will continue to support the title."

Though both FASA and Microsoft corporate PR continue to talk up Shadowrun, the game wasn't the monster hit both parties had hoped for. After receiving middling reviews, the 360 version of the game sold just under 150,000 copies in the US between its May 29 release and July 31, according to the NPD Group. And although one of Shadowrun's main selling points was cross-platform play, the PC edition sold barely over 12,000 copies during the same period.

One of the greatest criticisms of Shadowrun, an online-focused multiplayer shooter, was how far it strayed from its source material. Namely, the densely plotted cyberpunk role-playing game Shadowrun, created by FASA Studio's former parent company, the famed pen-and-paper RPG company FASA Corporation. Founded in 1980, FASA Corp. created many classic franchises over the following two decades, three of which became video games: BattleTech, which inspired nearly two dozen MechWarrior and MechAssault games; Crimson Skies, the subject of PC and Xbox airborne shooters; and Shadowrun, which, prior to its most recent incarnation, inspired a Super Nintendo and Genesis game in the mid-1990s.

FASA Corp.'s game wing, FASA Interactive, was bought by Microsoft in 1999 and renamed FASA Studio. Stung by the decline of pen-and-paper RPGs, FASA Corp. closed down in 2001 and sold off its various properties. Microsoft retains the video game licenses for Crimson Skies, MechAssault, and Shadowrun, but hasn't revealed any future plans for the IPs. "We have no announcements at this time," a rep told GameSpot.

I bought ShadowRun the day it came out. I returned ShadowRun the day it came out. . . . nice. The "real" ShadowRun formula would have been better than that unfun piece of ****, it would of most certainly sold better as well

Crimson Skies, Mechwarrior....ah the memories. I will miss FASA Studios. Hope MS can put together something that works with both the aforementioned titles. Oh to have a Mechwarrior or Crimson Skies MMO. Don't think we will ever see it but who knows.

That's too bad, yeah the game could have been better but if the hardcore geeks could get over the fact that it has the same name as their precious RPG, and if the other half could have gotten over the fact there was no SP and just play and enjoy the game for what it is. (A decent FPS that was actually innovating in some ways) Then maybe it would have had more purchases than it did. I guess SR was a make or break game for FASA.... too bad. But if the outcry of ruining a old RPG gave MS a sign of how many people wanted that instead, well then I wouldn't say that the franchise is DEAD they can always hire another dev to make it. And if they smell money from it you KNOW they will get it done, somehow.

Crimson Skies was also a promising series, I think the people just needed more support. There is alot worse o.o out there, oh my. I don't agree with this.

The truly sad thing about all of this is that I don't think Microsoft will learn anything from this. They will probably say "The ShadowRun license just doesn't make money" instead of realizing that an RPG would have almost certainly done well. The first person shooter/online only type of gameplay combined together to doom this game, not the ShadowRun license itself. It's still not too late Microsoft. Redeem yourself with an RPG like the hordes of fans have been screaming for for years.

Thats unfortunate. With what was there, the multiplayer was superb in Shadowrun. They could have done good things.

I, personally, like Shadowrun. I mean, it's definitely not the best game. Not the best grahpics. But it's fun, but that's my opinion.

i played the shadowrun demo for like 10 mins. it was boring, poorly made, and looking as good as a ps2 launch game. the sad part is, that i was so excited for this game to come out. i was all over the forums for like 6 months before its release. im glad FASA studios closed down. games under development for many many years, and with tons of money being thrown at them, and with many experienced developers on board, should not suck. and this game sucked. good riddance!

This is what happens when you take an RPG and try to make a shooter out of it, doing a pretty bad job of it in the process. Shadowrun had so much potential as an RPG it's just sad to see it all wasted this way. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find that MS decided that Shadowrun should be a shooter, just so they could try and get people they had already swindled out of money on Vista to cough up more cash to play against 360 owners. That particular strategy is working just as well as everyone outside of Redmond thought it would...

This news sucks, but like someone said below, MS still retains the licences for the 3 games. But, I'm curious if they will ever push out some new Battletech games, though. It's been 5 or 6 years since Mechwarrior 4, we could use a sequel.

Ok, FASA is gone. Kind of sucks as I grew up with them, but I grew up with TSR as well and didn't get a decent D&D game until WoTC bought them. Some little developer made this amazing Neverwinter Nights game. Maybe Microsoft should give them a shot at Shadowrun. I think Mechwarrior should become an MMORPG and have a turn-based strategy game released for LIVE. I want an Earthdawn RPG as well but that will most likely never happen. In a perfect world I would have had Black Isle Studios make all of these.

Good Point Sam_Lowery. Mechassault 2 would of been a better game if they didn't force you to use certain mechs on certain maps. That was total bs. I hope MS gives the Mechassault franchise another try. Mechassault 3 on next gen hardware would be simply amazing if it was geared more towards Mechassault 1. The multiplayer was simply amazing. Crimson Skies 2 would be great as well. The flight sim / combat games are scarce on the 360. There is only Blazing Angels series and Ace Combat (CAN"T WAIT FOR ACE IN A FEW WEEKS!!!) I would not even count Over G Fighters as a flight game. Pure garbage. I hope they do bring back those 2 franchises. (Crimson Skies and Mechassault) FASA was a talented group. I tried playing Shadow run but wasn't feeling it.

"All MS's corporate brains can process is NPD numbers. The future of Shadowrun videogames is dead." Guy...the game sold horribly when you consider how much time and money Microsoft poured into the project. They made a couple mistakes. They should never have named it Shadowrun, it came out at the wrong time and the marketing was less then stellar. The game really isnt half bad, it had some bugs which were fixed, I dont know if its worth $60 but ill be picking it up pre-owned in the next couple months.

Microsoft says they are supporting the current Shadowrun title but say nothing of it's future. Great job handling the Shadowrun IP microsoft! I now have absolutely zero hope of a Shadowrun RPG e-v-e-r coming out. All MS's corporate brains can process is NPD numbers. The future of Shadowrun videogames is dead.

Dang, I really like Shadowrun. I think more people had a problem paying $60 for an online only game with no campaign. It should have been sold at a budget rate or had a campaign to sell better. But I am still enjoying it. And Crimson Skies was one of my favorites on the original xbox.

What people have to understand is that just because FASA is closed doesn't mean there won't be anymore Crimson Skies, MechAssault, or even Shadowrun games. Microsoft owns the rights to all three IPs, and will most likely do something with at least the first two.

If they had made an RPG which the 360 is desperately lacking, instead of a FPS, which the 360 is saturated with, I bet they would be in a lot better financial shape right now. Not that Shadowrun the FPS was a horrible shooter. It was just buried by all the other games of that type. They really should have known better. A shame FASA... I used to love thee...

Despite all the negative reviews, Shadowrun was a really fun game. I wish the review scores hadn't been so low, because I'm sure more people would have bought it and enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but it's very very fun, and that's what matters. Now I know how all the PS3 fans felt about the crap reviews for Lair.

Man, for guys like me who used to play Mechwarrior 2, 3, and 4 online back in the when, and who is an avid collector of Battletech swag, this is really heartbreaking. I remember when The Fasa Corp closed down in Chicago about 6 years ago, when they got absorbed by Microsoft, everyone into Battletech and Mechwarrior were freaking out that it was the end of Fasa and those properties. Sad sad sad.
