FASA Studio KIA

Microsoft shutters Shadowrun and MechAssault developer, the final remnant of the once-mighty tabletop-RPG maker; half the staff "redeployed" to other MGS projects.

Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot that it has shut down its internal developer FASA Studio. The news first surfaced last night on the official forums for Shadowrun, the shop's PC and Xbox 360 shooter.

"It is my sad duty to announce that FASA Studio has officially closed its doors," wrote FASA studio head Mitch Gitelman in a post. "Today was the official last day of employment for those of us who had not moved on to other positions within Microsoft Game Studios. While the rumors have been circulating forever, we chose to wait on an official announcement because we didn't want people's attention distracted from our last product, Shadowrun, a game we love."

Later, Microsoft reps gave further details on the closure. "Microsoft has redeployed more than half of the FASA employees throughout the Microsoft Game Studios division, strengthening MGS as a whole with their specialized talent developing a cross-platform game and overall experience as veteran world-class game developers," a rep said. "We are very proud of what the FASA team accomplished with Shadowrun, and we will continue to support the title."

Though both FASA and Microsoft corporate PR continue to talk up Shadowrun, the game wasn't the monster hit both parties had hoped for. After receiving middling reviews, the 360 version of the game sold just under 150,000 copies in the US between its May 29 release and July 31, according to the NPD Group. And although one of Shadowrun's main selling points was cross-platform play, the PC edition sold barely over 12,000 copies during the same period.

One of the greatest criticisms of Shadowrun, an online-focused multiplayer shooter, was how far it strayed from its source material. Namely, the densely plotted cyberpunk role-playing game Shadowrun, created by FASA Studio's former parent company, the famed pen-and-paper RPG company FASA Corporation. Founded in 1980, FASA Corp. created many classic franchises over the following two decades, three of which became video games: BattleTech, which inspired nearly two dozen MechWarrior and MechAssault games; Crimson Skies, the subject of PC and Xbox airborne shooters; and Shadowrun, which, prior to its most recent incarnation, inspired a Super Nintendo and Genesis game in the mid-1990s.

FASA Corp.'s game wing, FASA Interactive, was bought by Microsoft in 1999 and renamed FASA Studio. Stung by the decline of pen-and-paper RPGs, FASA Corp. closed down in 2001 and sold off its various properties. Microsoft retains the video game licenses for Crimson Skies, MechAssault, and Shadowrun, but hasn't revealed any future plans for the IPs. "We have no announcements at this time," a rep told GameSpot.

Humorguy_basic: The PC version faired much worse than the 360 I imagine because it requires Vista to play. I don't have the info readily available, but I think the minimal req. for either it or Halo 2 were 2 gigs of ram

This game had a lot of promise. It could have been a huge system seller had it kept to the basics all of us fans of the former Shadowrun had, I don't understand how these people in Microsoft don't listen to gamers. Ultimately we are the ones that make games million dollar sellers. So many withdrew from any interest in the game once they found it was not a semi RPG. Microsoft has to stop giving us all these FPS titles and start giving RPGS. This game could have really been amazing but oh no lets create another shooter and make a quasi Halo game? Enough already give us True Phantasy & Shadowrun RPG!!!

oh this is just crap. THey basicly ripped off EVERYONE who bought the game. We were promised DLC, and microsoft decides they dont want to support it anymore? BULL. And people need to stop whining about it not being like the original shadowrun, times change.

And of course, I hope it's bug-free (I never bought it) because there's no likely support now, is there?! Also, poor sales on a 360 is 150,000 and poor sales on PC are 12,000?! That's a 1 to 12 ratio! Is PC gaming THAT bad now in the States?!

Shadowrun was a really awesome game when I used to play it. I no longer play it because the rest of the achievements were just annoying me and I didn't really care for them and there was other games that I wanted to play more. If anyone is out there still wondering whether or not to buy the game, don't listen to all the reviews or what other people might say, try it out for yourself and you should enjoy it.

"Microsoft. PLEASE I BEG YOU..... Please make a mmorpg of Shadowrun. It could be your World of Warcraft. It would be huge..." I feel you. But, WoW is the phenomenon it is because of Warcraft 1, 2, 3 and Starcraft. It already had a massive following because of the customers the previous excellent games Blizzard created. The new Shadowrun did not create an even mediocre following, especially for the PC. Sad to say, an MMO would fail miserably.

Keep in mind that the pen-and-paper RPGs are still in print and actively supported. Check them out at WizKids.com .

I really want to see a true Shadowrun game come out. I wonder what are the chances this will happen though. I like my 360 a lot but I wish there was more RPG's and if there could be a Shadowrun RPG then that would be great news. I also hope there will be another Crimson Skies. Not long ago there was a rumor that MS was making it now all I need is MS to come out and say it is being made.

I played the game extensively. It had the best premise of any game I've seen for a long time. The only problem I see with it is the lag, which is driving most of the players away. That in turn makes less games for everyone. The shutting down of FASA studios pretty much guarantees that there won't be any download content which just leaves this game dead in the water. I traded it today for crackdown. Great premise, terrible execution.

I always wanted a mechwarrior 5. Another great studio bombed by the big M. Same story with Digital Anvil and the Freelancer and Starlancer games. All great franchises doing nothing.

I hope it doesn't mean Shadowrun is going down the drain. A lot of people say they hate it, but only believe the massive anti-hype from every VG review in the universe and have probably never played the game in their life.

The new shadowrun game is more fun than most people give it credit for. Still retarded they didn't make it an rpg of some sorts.

Why the hell would you take an IP known for its PRG roots and make it into an MMOFPS? That's asinine. I don't think MGS understood how many copies would have been sold had it been developed into something a lot closer to the game released on consoles in 1993.

In all reality, FASA died in 2001. Most of their talent moved to FanPro years ago, and then to Catalyst Game Labs last month. Now they're making real Battletech, not that MechAssault nonsense.

Awww... it's sad that FASA is gone, but it's even sadder that the last Shadowrun product is what it is. Imagine a modern remake of the old shadowrun rpg, that would have been awsome. Hey! Lets just wait... 10 years or so and maybe Bethesda will buy the rights, make a Shadowrun MMO or something. :-D

Having the guts to put teleportation in an FPS was good. From what I've seen and played, I have a feeling I'd find the machinima more entertaining than the gameplay. And that's really saying something.

NO WAY! I was just thinking how great it would be to work at FASA Studios... I didn't know thier parent company created Battletech. Wow... I think I might still have that game. Mechwarrior is cool and I really like Shadowrun as well. So much for FASA Studio making MechAssault 3... I thought they might be working on that. That game could be really cool. Well, when is Microsoft announcing MechAssault 3 anyway... and who will be making it? This might be the most stunning news I have ever read on GameSpot.

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Microsoft I hate you for all of eternity. You wana know why? I tell you why MechWarrior! That was pretty much the only good mech game in the entire universe also the xbox version is pretty crappy compared to the pcs version. I mean you ruined the entire game by making too arcade with power ups and health pick ups. Only if some other PC company would buy the rights to the mechwarrior series and go back to old classic formual!

shadowrun was a great title, it's just a shame they didn't have more maps or game modes, i think if they gave a bit more to the package, it would have been an outstanding game. But the pricepoint didn't match the package, it felt rushed and sadly hollow. but the gameplay was top notch. a real shame.

Wow, I saw this coming. They should have listened to the massive uproar from dedicated fans who told them that making a classic, beloved 80's RPG into an xbox live tea-bagging orgy was a huge mistake. Shadowrun should have been an RPG. If they didn't want to make an RPG, fine. But at least stay true to what Shadowrun is. It should have been a co-operative game with "classes" (like street samurai, rigger, decker, mage) with different shadowruns (missions/levels) that you go on and rise to fame (or infamy) as a Shadowrunner. I said it before, I'll say it again. Microsoft took a amazingly deep setting, threw out all of the coolest elements, and dumbed it down to make it easier to swallow for casual, xbox live gamers. The people who like this game don't like Shadowrun, they like an online FPS. They wouldn't care if the game was called "Cybernetic Troll Wizard Tournament."

Its a real shame, FASA was great back in the day. I wonder how hard Microsoft pushed for Shadowrun to be a FPS rather than the original RPG style. Not doing either style well is a recipe for poor sales.
