FASA Studio KIA

Microsoft shutters Shadowrun and MechAssault developer, the final remnant of the once-mighty tabletop-RPG maker; half the staff "redeployed" to other MGS projects.

Microsoft has confirmed with GameSpot that it has shut down its internal developer FASA Studio. The news first surfaced last night on the official forums for Shadowrun, the shop's PC and Xbox 360 shooter.

"It is my sad duty to announce that FASA Studio has officially closed its doors," wrote FASA studio head Mitch Gitelman in a post. "Today was the official last day of employment for those of us who had not moved on to other positions within Microsoft Game Studios. While the rumors have been circulating forever, we chose to wait on an official announcement because we didn't want people's attention distracted from our last product, Shadowrun, a game we love."

Later, Microsoft reps gave further details on the closure. "Microsoft has redeployed more than half of the FASA employees throughout the Microsoft Game Studios division, strengthening MGS as a whole with their specialized talent developing a cross-platform game and overall experience as veteran world-class game developers," a rep said. "We are very proud of what the FASA team accomplished with Shadowrun, and we will continue to support the title."

Though both FASA and Microsoft corporate PR continue to talk up Shadowrun, the game wasn't the monster hit both parties had hoped for. After receiving middling reviews, the 360 version of the game sold just under 150,000 copies in the US between its May 29 release and July 31, according to the NPD Group. And although one of Shadowrun's main selling points was cross-platform play, the PC edition sold barely over 12,000 copies during the same period.

One of the greatest criticisms of Shadowrun, an online-focused multiplayer shooter, was how far it strayed from its source material. Namely, the densely plotted cyberpunk role-playing game Shadowrun, created by FASA Studio's former parent company, the famed pen-and-paper RPG company FASA Corporation. Founded in 1980, FASA Corp. created many classic franchises over the following two decades, three of which became video games: BattleTech, which inspired nearly two dozen MechWarrior and MechAssault games; Crimson Skies, the subject of PC and Xbox airborne shooters; and Shadowrun, which, prior to its most recent incarnation, inspired a Super Nintendo and Genesis game in the mid-1990s.

FASA Corp.'s game wing, FASA Interactive, was bought by Microsoft in 1999 and renamed FASA Studio. Stung by the decline of pen-and-paper RPGs, FASA Corp. closed down in 2001 and sold off its various properties. Microsoft retains the video game licenses for Crimson Skies, MechAssault, and Shadowrun, but hasn't revealed any future plans for the IPs. "We have no announcements at this time," a rep told GameSpot.

You can crack Shadowrun to run on XP... But speaking of Classic Battletech, people should look into megamek java based games such as megamek.net or totaltech megamek.notcows.com

When I first heard about Shadowrun coming to PC, I thought it would be a must-buy for me. "Vista only" killed it for me too. I'd love to see the Shadowrun and Battletech properties kept alive. (Especially Battletech - I'd love to see another Mech Commander). But then, I had hopes M$ would keep Tex Murphy alive when they bought that IP, and we never heard of the series again...

Vista Only = No thanks. That is why it bombed on the PC, well one of the many reasons.

Shadowrun sucked more than a tornado blowing across east kansas in the summertime. I was expecting a more open ended Dues Ex type game with magic and decking and subhumans, and we get a freakin team fortress clone with a shadowrun theme. No wonder they closed the doors. What a waste.

@Sigil-otaku yes you are correct that Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 look like they will do very well but Bungie created Halo and NG2 is Tecmo. They are just being published by M$. All I was trying to state is the fairly obvious that big businesses shouldn't purchase game developers that cater to the hardcore gamer unless they plan to market to them. It's setting them up for failure. Take Rare for example... Still wish they would make a Killer Instinct 3 but yet M$ has them developing crap like Viva Pinyata

I never even bothered with the game once I heard how it was not going to really incorporate the Shadowrun universe. If it had done that I would have seriously been interested in the game.

I liked Shadowrun at first. I stopped playing it because of the community you have to share the game with. My worst online experiences have come through playing Shadowrun.

@ manicdk: Microsoft generally does know what they are doing, Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 will two of the top selling games of 2007 and 2008 (with Halo 3 probably being the best selling next gen game for a year or two). All companies have some problems except for the really lucky ones, EA shouldn't sell as well as it does since it just revises the same games every year and the dynasty warriors series is good in my opinion but 5 sequels is alot for a game. What about clover studios? They made some great games like Viewtiful joe and Okami yet they have been shut down not long ago. Sequels sell better than any other type of game nowadays and a game like shadowrun can be good but still sell bad. MS really should have supported them more financially but the same goes for clover studios and probably many other great developers.

I couldn't really care less. A big criticism being 'how far it strayed from its source material'? Sounds about right- Crimson skies was a major reason I got an xbox, but boy did FASA know how to make a complete 'up yours' sequel... They should have just left the franchise to Zipper Interactive. Now THEY knew what they were on about.

Really lame, almost as sad as the Wizards and D&D situation. Was really hoping for a Mechwarrior: Age of Darkness game to be developed. Just a sign that the big boys like M$ can purchase great companies but don't know crap on how to sell or market games

I'm actually glad that FASA has finally closed their doors. That studio continuously killed proposals from other developers who approached Microsoft about working with the Shadowrun license.

I just hope Mechwarrior 5 will come out someday. Mechassault might be nice, and I found #1 an #2 fun, but it was never as fun for me as the Mechwarrior series. As for Crimson Skies, I liked it, although I didn't love it, and I hope more entries in the series come out for its fans.

I can't belive people like Mech Assault so much. Even though it was a nice looking game and had some neat features, anyone who has every played the TRUE Mech Warrior games will tell you that Mech Assault is the prime example of consolization and dumbing down a great franchise into somthing completely different. Mech Warrior 2 is one of Gamespot's Greatest Games of All Time, and for a good reason too. It's one of those games you play way back, and is still better than half of the games released today. After the Xbox was released though Microsoft made them make some Xbox games (albet good xbox games) designed for the teenage crowd instead of deep chromhound-like Mech simulation games that made them "underground famous" to create one of the greatest game series ever made.

Well, there goes all hope for new content. even though there were only 15,000 copies for the 360 of shadowrun sold, you will ALWAYS find a complete full room of this game. Increase sales by dropping the price to $39 and get some more MAPS out there MGS

The Clancy Brothers said it best. "Oh, they're moving FASA's grave to make a sewer - They're moving it, regardless of expense. They've dug up their remains to lay down nine-inch drains, To irrigate some posh bloke's residence."

See what happens when you phone in a lame multiplayer game based on a deep IP. I'm sad that this pretty much seals the fate of ever seeing a decent Shadowrun or Mechwarrior game again, but if the last two games are what we were to expect, then good riddance.

"the 360 version of the game sold just under 150,000 copies" "the PC edition sold barely over 12,000 copies during the same period." OUCH!!! Sorry ShadowRun fans, but there are good reasons for the lack of sales.

"firebirdboi06: The PC version faired much worse than the 360 I imagine because it requires Vista to play. I don't have the info readily available, but I think the minimal req. for either it or Halo 2 were 2 gigs of ram" Not only that. Because it is cross-platform, they dumbed down the aiming (made it harder) for PC gamers because they didn't wanted console gamers to feel dominated by PC gamers. That made the PC community hate the "Games for Windows - Live" feature.

"It's kind of sad to see companies like TSR and FASA die out." Yeah dude. Luckily D&D found it's way into the of Wizards of the Coast, who (despite being a glory hog and near-monopoly) have revived PnP games to an extent. Also, it's a good thing that the PnP rights for Shadowrun are held by FanPro. They came out with Shadowrun 4th Edition a little while ago. It strays quite a bit from the original IP, but it's a hell of a lot better then the Microsoft version. It's worth checking out. Oh! And the Shadowrun RPG is still frickin' HUGE in Germany.

I enjoyed MechAssault and Crimson Skies immensely. Hopefully Microsoft will resurrect the two IPs on the 360 somewhere down the line. Shadowrun, however, I didn't play. For some odd reason it didn't interest me in the least, despite my love for the original 16-bit era title and fondness for shooters...I haven't even tried the demo, and I'm always trying new demos.

That's pretty stupid closing them down because of one crappy game. That's like shutting down Bungie if Halo 3 sold poorly despite their perfect success rate with previous game titles. So do they not have the rights to Battletech anymore? Battletech and Shadowrun both have lots of great potential as games. Shadowrun should've gone the route of something like Fallout 3. I don't see how anyone thought that last Shadowrun game would be a good game. Even if it somehow got good reviews and sold well, it was still far from what anyone would expect a Shadowrun game to be that they may as well have just based the game on something generic premise. If you're not going to make use of an entire game world at your disposal, what's the point of using the license? It's kind of sad to see companies like TSR and FASA die out.

Good thing too. After Mech Assault I considered FASA dead anyways. Sure they created one of the best game franchises ever (MechWarrior series, closely based off of the Tabletop BattleTech), but they just kept going downward after MechWarrior 4. Damn, those Mech games were amazing (except mech assault)... its such a shame they too such a great franchise (I think MW2 is on gamespot's "Greatest Games of All Time" list), and slowly killed themselves with the start of Mech Assault.

"Ha! Nice... Lol! Back to Heavenly Sword..." ...and what are you going to do when all 6 hours of that game are overwith? Lair? I know the main reason I didn't buy the PC version of Shadowrun was it's Vista olny requirement. But that aside, MS killing Fasa isn't all that suprising.
