Far Cry Survey Seeks Ideas on Future Settings, From Vampires to Vietnam

Publisher Ubisoft appears to have issued a survey to some of its customers, asking them what they would like to see in future Far Cry games.

The questionnaire, brought to light by Eurogamer, offers a broad range of scenarios for fans to approve or dismiss. Ideas include "a Far Cry game where you can fight against or join vampires", as well as "a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic world", and even "a Far Cry game set in the modern day on a Jurassic Park-style island with dinosaurs".

While the survey does not offer solid information on what approach Ubisoft Montreal will take for its next Far Cry game, it does suggest that those in charge of the franchise are keeping an open-mind on where the series could go.

Other possible scenarios in the survey include real-world settings such as Peru and Alaska, as well as moments in history such as the Vietnam War.

Work on Far Cry 4 commenced during the latter stages of the Far Cry 3 project--a common process of tandem game development that, if continued, means that a bulk of work on the next Far Cry project is already completed. That would suggest, though not confirm, that information from this survey would not apply to the next game in the series, but those beyond that.

Far Cry 4 shipped in November on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and last-gen consoles to generally positive critical reception. GameSpot's Far Cry 4 review suggested the open-world FPS "represents the good, the bad, and ugly of video games all at once."

"It's awesome and messy and dumb and fun and annoying and gross and beautiful," the review concluded.

I think Far Cry 5 should be set on a semi terra formed and colonised Mar's going through a futuristic rebellion with some corporate tyrant being the main villain. Set the period 100 hundred years into the future, possibilities are endless.

FarCry never belonged to Ubisoft. They just stole it from the right owners, Crytek, the ones who brought REAL 3D graphic into games and gave them life. Farcry franchise doesn't deserve to live, so I have a simple suggestion for Ubi: CLOSE!

Far Cry is one of my favourite franchises at the moment, with possibly the exception of FC2 (I wasn't left with positive impressions but may give it another try).

I just hope they don't mess it up by going too crazy with it. Sure, have a whacky expansion like they did with Blood Dragon, or even a spin-off, but I'm enjoying the current formula as it is.

And please don't make it a sci-fi game. I can see that becoming the next done-to-death thing like WW2 games were a few years ago or Modern Warfare inspired shooters have been more recently. I mix up my gaming specifically so I don't get sick of the stuff I like. So when people say stuff like "oh great, another modern shooter", it gets on my nerves because it is their fault for over playing that particular genre and the industries fault for over saturating the market with the "in thing" until the majority of people are sick of it. That means once it has been done-to-death, developers don't want to touch that genre with a barge pole, meaning that people who like that kind of game but didn't play it to death will have to wait until enough time has elapsed where developers want to revisit that genre again! *gasp*

Sorry about the rant at the end there. Got carried away.

I would definitely like to see Jason again, this time against Hoyt's bosses, in other islands. Perhaps even "reanimate" Vaas, since I have no idea if he is truly dead or not in Far Cry 3, and it would be amazing to see his deranged mind again, really cool. This would be a success and it would be loved by many fans like me, because FC3 had great character development, and a great campaign, and it would follow the story that seemed unfinished. Trust me, this game would make enormous amounts of money. You can start by making Hoyt's bosses kidnap Jason's friends from the boat, through an helicopter perhaps. Then since Jason has a phone, he can get a call from Hoyt's main hitman or whatever, letting him know that the "game is still on," and this time, you are dealing with the big "fish". Then he can get the CIA's airplane to travel to the new islands, and I bet the spy will know where they are. I could give you tons of ideas for this game. You already have a winning formula with FC3, and it can be continued to the next level, using all the loved characters, which is what you should have done.

CRY BABY CRY!!! It never fails! There's ALWAYS a handful of emotional constipated cry baby complainers that are apparently impossible to satisfy.

Seriously if you honestly think games such as Far Cry 4, AC Black Flag, Shadow of Mordor, etc. are somehow not great games you have issues. You are but a tiny minority of asshats who bitch and moan about every f'n thing under the sun.

Somebody could give these clowns a Ferrari 458i Italia for example and they would then look for things to bitch and moan about the Ferrari (which was given to them) and then they would bad mouth the person who gifted it to them.

Anyways back to reality.. Ubisoft's formula works so there is no need to drastic change. The tiny minority of "I'm impossible to please because I'm an emotionally constipated cry baby" crowd will never be happy with any f'n thing so don't let their emotionally constipated charged rants discourage you from enjoying some of the best games ever developed.

Remember these people are truly f#$ked in the head and there's nothing you, me and or any phenomenal game designer such as Ubisoft can do about.

Spaghetti Western is my pick, would hopefully force them to create something unique. Although an Alaska game with a heavy survival focus would be awesome if they nailed a bleak, tense atmosphere and cut the crap on 'cinematic moments' and ridiculously over-the-top action sequences. In the same way I think an Alien-style game in which the player is marooned on a hostile planet would be great (I know, "tired futuristic shooter genre" etc., but I really think it could work, again if they nail the mood and go more survival horror than brospacemarineshooter).

But that's what most people like :). Personally I am sick of it, I want to be given back more control of my character, even if the animations and such aren't as perfect.

Lame, this franchise is already boring and now theyre searching for ideas which means the game will be super uninspired and just another cookie cutter remake such is ubisoft Montreals specialty. Ass creed, watchdogs and far cry are three of the most over hyped, over rated and boring franchises in video game history, this can't be a coincidence, ubisoft Montreal really is that sucky.

Jurassic Park for sure. The "Ubisoft formula" would be a great fit for that, if for no other reason. They can't handle a serious tone for a game set in the Vietnam War unless they go full Rambo. And inFamous already did the vampire thing IIRC.

Make it like F.E.A.R. or DOOM...but open-world, I guess(since it's Far Cry)? Replica Soldiers all over the place and supernatural horror or a bunch of demons killing everyone.

Asking the customer what he wants is a sign of desperation. This story underlines the fundamental problem with many large publishers like Ubisoft and EA trying to make creative entertainment. They think in terms of brand management, risk mitigation, and maximizing total profit. They reason that issuing a new "chapter" saves them marketing effort because the brand carries a meaning with "diehard fans" and they can reuse much of the previous game's assets. What we get is boring rehashes of the same old thing that 400 people worked on one small meaningless part of. I can just hear the yawns in the Far Cry team meeting as they are again faced with making lightning strike with that tired franchise. They have no passion. The same goes for the Assassin's Creed team. They're trying to make games as if they were laundry detergent.

I've been following some small independent developers working on game concepts I find unusual and interesting. They all started with the idea of a game they always wanted to play. Their enthusiasm infects everyone on a small team working on it. That's how things like Divinity: Original Sin and Papers Please happen. Passion to see something amazing release with their name on it is what drives them, not sales projections. It's that way in any creative pursuit. Games need creativity. Support independent games!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Bioware did the same thing with Dragon Age Inquisition. They saw how many people didn't like the second game so they asked what kind of things we wanted in the third. They listened and Inquisition turned out to be a good game.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Except the part where DA:I turned out to be nothing more than a button-masher with tired and trite MMO-stylized fetch quests. There is a laundry list of complaints I have, but to say that DA:I was anything other than a monetary success is an exaggeration.

DA:I exhibits precisely what is wrong with the current trend of gaming. It's homogenized, mindless crap. Play any game put out by the ACTUAL (read as no longer there) Bioware team and you'll notice that the quality isn't even close. Just from Origins to Inquisition you see a dramatic drop in quality. It's unquestionably evident that these games were made with 100% different teams. One team focused on quality, in-depth storytelling and mechanics. The other team focused on what would sell to the most people.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> For every one of you that liked DA:I there are just as many that think it was dull and uninspired. The point I was trying to make is that creativity needs room to breath. Big corporate publishers used to pick the winners for us among the developers which had it's own set of issues. Now they ARE the developers.

Asking customers about their needs is good when deciding how big a fuel tank to add to a new car but not for the styling or any creative part of a product. That is why talented people are in such demand. Imagine a band asking their fans how long the guitar solos should be on their next cd.
