After announcing Thursday that Far Cry 4 had sold 7 million units in less than two months, publisher Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke about the franchise's future in an earnings call.

While he didn't confirm Far Cry 5 or any other new entry in the series, he did suggest that Far Cry 4 won't be the last game in the over-the-top action franchise.

"The Far Cry franchise is here for the long-run and is a stronger contender in the shooter genre," he said.

Far Cry 4 outperformed expectations for Ubisoft, Guillemot said, adding that activity and interest in the game was the strongest in franchise history for the week after launch. Sales to date are up substantially over Far Cry 3, despite launching on the same date as other heavy-hitters such as Dragon Age: Inquisition and Grand Theft Auto V for Xbox One andPlayStation 4.

Ubisoft has a number of ways it plans to keep players engaged with Far Cry 4 from now until the release of the next game in the series, if there is to be one. First, the publisher continues to release DLC for Far Cry 4, including a new PvP mode that was launched just this week. On top of that, Ubisoft has said it is thinking about releasing a Blood Dragon-style spinoff for Far Cry 4, though this has not yet been confirmed.
