Far Cry 5 Officially Confirmed

Ubisoft's first-person shooter series returns.

211 Comments

Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry 5, the newest entry in its open-world first-person shooter series. The game was revealed just before the company's earnings call, when it was also confirmed that it will be out during the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018.

There are no further details, so as of yet the location of Far Cry 5 and the time period it is set in remain a mystery. During the call, Ubisoft said we'll learn more about the game "very soon," which may point to an E3 reveal. It declined to address a question about dubious rumors suggesting the game may be a western.

The last entry in the series was Far Cry: Primal, which launched in 2016 and was set in prehistoric times. This was considered a spinoff instead of a new mainline entry in the series. In September of that year, Ubisoft confirmed a new Far Cry was in development but indicated that it wasn't necessarily planned for 2017.

"We believe Alpha for these games needs to be one year before release," explained editorial VP Tommy Francois. "We're trying to achieve that. That's super f***ing blunt, I don't even know if I'm allowed to say this. This is the goal we're going for: Alpha one year before, more quality, more polish. So if this means biting the [bullet] and not having an Assassin's game or a Far Cry [in 2017], f*** it."

I've loved my time with Far Cry but, man, Ubisoft needs to stop driving their franchises into the ground. If they're doing another Far Cry they need to do something different, if not innovative. If they don't have any original ideas then just freakin' steal some! How about the analog combat from Dead Island, complete with limb dismemberment? That would be awesome to see in a more primitive or medieval setting. While you're stealing ideas, why not Skyrim it up and make Far Cry: Vikings? Throw in the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor and I'd be all over that. Just, please, do something different!

I thought fx3 was superb. Found fc4 to be incredibly boring after about half way through. I can't put my finger on why.

Don't mind a bit of FarCry action. Never really disliked any of their titles.

I love the FarCry series because it's just so darn playable! I hope they can keep the magic alive with another game that's hard to stop playing.

I would love to see an arctic setting for this one maybe do something similar to primal where you could freeze to death if you stay out to long

Just please, PLEASE:

1) Forget about multiplayer, no one gives a shit! Who remember Far Cry for its multiplayer? Instead, focus your time and resources on a good and solid single player experience;

2) Enough is ENOUGH with those boring grab 50 of this stuff; destroy 70 whatever; do the exactly same whatever bullshit 200 times. Dont you guys learn anything with The Witcher 3? An adventure open world game, with a gigantic map, and nothing of this crap. Cant you guys follow the example?

@aj87: What would they learn from The Witcher 3? There are many better RPGs/open world games for them to learn from.

@darksouls: The other thing was a CD with the soundtrack of the game. And all that with the same price as other AAA games. Oh, another thing is their DLC's, which has a huge content and far, far superior to the DLC mentality these days. Hell, one of the DLC's even got an award on its own, winning above other full games.

But, sure... What in this world could they ever learn right?

@darksouls: Well, like I said, there isnt the whole grab/do/destroy the same thing over and over several times, like many open world games have. It has memorable characters, great dialogues, and every single one of the subquests is unique and a little story on their own. And not just the game, When I bought it, it came with a little thank you note, a beautiful map of the game, stickers e something else I dont remember. Its more than a decade the last time I saw this in a game.

If you want to be a hater of the game cause of reasons, suit your self. Im not saying its perfect, but its straight up awesome and has a lot to be praised, and the majority of industry, users and critics, agree with this.

oh great...another far cry...so a re-usable map (like Primal did with Far Cry 3 map), a generic story, crappy map reveal towers, a ridiculous assortment of "make work" pickup items...and terrible dlc.

Sound about right? This game series should have stopped after Far Cry 3...was the only good game in the series...

@n00bsla3r66: I couldn't get past the repetitive quests. I'm ok with fetch side quests as they can mostly be ignored, but every main mission being the same I can't.

I'm surprised Francois was allowed to say that without Ubisoft putting him in the basement. Guess it's still early.

@cyberpunk_2077: it depends, because i play with a game controller instead of mouse and keyboard. the original crysis on pc have better gameplay but it's controller setup and sensitivity kind of sucked, crysis 2 and 3 was okay for gameplay but it's controller setup (i play tactical like i play it on call of duty 4 and up) was better than the original crysis on pc, the original crysis on console sucked (if only it has power struggle, 6 vs 6 in a small to medium map). as for farcry 4, it's good, kind feel like other first person shooter that ubisoft has done but open space-like.

The location could be either Patagonia or Alaska. I'm just guessing as these locations have not been visited before by far cry series and are sparsely populated.

Never played primal but had a lot of fun with 4 on coop. That being said, it'd be good to see the formula get a fresh approach. Time will tell.

Way too much smart ass negativity in this comment section with people piling on the sarcastic hate about gameplay features that are common across all games but the fools don't recognise them because they go under a different name. Ubisoft did not invent these features. These structures underlie most games.

Anyway Far Cry 4 was a great game and the map editor is still the defining feature of this gen but very few people actually knew what it was capable of. Too busy writing sarcastic comments about towers I guess. The Far Cry 4 map editor reached a milestone all the previous games had strived for. It allowed you to create your own mini games and then play them coop with a friend. The possibilities are endless with unlimited replayability. Limited only by your imagination. A creative players dream. No other game has ever achieved that. If you want to see what the map editor is capable, check out the maps by DeeKayEm.

Far Cry Primal was also a great game. Superior graphics, beauiful art style with lots of character. Refreshing gameplay without guns so the gun porn FPS crowd piled on the hate. But sadly no map editor.

Far Cry 5 will be great. The series never fails to deliver. I just hope they put the map editor in and expand it further. I would love to have seen the map editor expanded to a huge standalone package and fully marketed as Far Cry Worlds where u build your own games.

@justerthought: "features that are common across all games" - Especially common in all of Ubisoft games. Does not really matter if were talking about The Crew or AC or Farcry. They are all different games in the same shell. They have become so mind numbing that they really are not enjoyable for more than a few hours. Considering that all have a lifespan of over 40 this is a pretty bad development. You can say that there could be too much hate coming from the community but I dont blame them. Though they could be a bit more constructive at times.

@justerthought: Loved FC3 - one of the best games I've played. Actually finished it (which is unusual for me). Not sure if I just couldn't get into FC4 or was all "FC3'd out" because I bought FC4 not long after completing 3 but gave up about half-way through the story of 4, but there's no doubt the FC series are great games. It's sad that it's trendy to bash Ubi no matter what they do - when they said last year they wouldn't do an AC in 2016 people still hated on them.

I didn't get Primal but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with FC5 and think they should take it back to an island, like FC3...there's something enjoyable about having to struggle to stay alive, even without enemy guns, because the islands were so beautiful just to wander around, and it made you be cautious all the time anyway (unless you were in a jeep / tuktuk).

@hassibt: FC4 the most boring game you ever played?? Jesus! That's incredible! Have you only played, like, 7 games or something? Also you've clearly never played those Walking Dead games because they will blow you away; I actually stabbed myself in the thigh just for something to do, and I only played it for about 15 minutes (although it seemed like about 2 hours). It still hurts to this day.

@hassibt:

I'm playing Watchdogs 2 right now and it's structured nothing like Far Cry. It's a great game and put the first one to shame. Vaas was a great game character but it was the game that was the star attraction, just like every Far Cry game. The are all a survial game placing you alone against a beautiful hostile world. That concept is timeless.

If you want to criticise Ubisoft, focuss on the Assassin's Creed franchise that dropped the quality so it could rush a game out every year. AC Unity was the perfect example. A great game spoilt by shoddy production work.

I'm hoping it's got something dramatically different. My main issue with Ubi is how repetitive their games get. After 3 games of Far Cry-vania, I want to see something different from open world, capture base, hunt animal. Would love to see a stronger story and a lot of set pieces this time around.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Yeah Ubi... has gotten stale. I personally did not like Far Cry Primal but I know a lot of people liked it. I liked Far Cry 2/3/4 The Grenade launcher FC2 was and still is the best grenade launcher in any game. FC2 has infinite respawning enemies though which killed the game. I honestly don't remember FC3, and FC4 was decent. But they need to add some better quests, open worlds are fun but at times you need to make cool set pieces within the open world. They need to switch things up. Maybe add some new game play mechanics.

@guitarist1980:

You people have a terrible memory. FC2 got hated at the time for being too realistic but I loved it. Guns jamming, vaccines and respawning enemy which I loved because you always got great battles. If you don't want respawn, don't go back where you came from and if you don't want guns jamming, don't pick up rusty old guns off dead punks, alway grab a fresh loadout before going out on a mission. It still has the best fire propogation gameplay in any game.

@justerthought: I don't have a terrible memory, my problem with Far Cry 2 is legit. As soon as you cleared out a camp full of enemies and left the area for a minute when you returned to the camp it was full of enemies again lol.. that is not realistic it was poor game design.

No idea why the hate, Far Cry games so far have provided me with some good entertainment. It is just like watching a James Bond movie, nothing thrilling, but some fun alternative while it lasts and after you played it, you never play it again but aren't mad about it.

No it wasn't. That's a myth. The games have got better and better with each instalment. Far Cry 2 brought in fire propogation as a game play tool. Far Cry 3 brought in random events and animals. Far Cry 4 brought in coop and the ability to make your own coop games in the map editor.

@jayskoon93: I played them all and have always enjoyed. I was afraid of primal because... no guns. just rocks and spears and arrows, ect.... but I got it when it went on sale and when I first threw a spear into a mans chest and sent his body flying..... blew my mind with joy. Then, when I tamed and road on the back of my first beast while in combat it became one a my favorite in the series. Its just a beautiful game.
