Far Cry 5 Is The Series' Fastest Selling Game Ever

That's a lot of Cheeseburgers.

Far Cry 5 has become the fastest-selling game in franchise history in its opening week, according to Ubisoft. The company claimed $310M USD in its first week, double the opening sales of previous franchise record-holder Far Cry 4. That also makes it the second-biggest launch ever for Ubisoft, behind The Division.

The announcement also mentions a few other launch week stats. Far Cry 5 was streamed for more than 55,000 hours. Players were were ambushed by 8,651 skunks, caught 5.1 million fish, and spent 1.1 million hours with Cheeseburger the bear. The most popular gun for hire was the pilot Nick Rye, while the most popular animal companion was Boomer the dog–which makes sense, given that he's a very good boy.

We heard just this week that Far Cry 5 had hit the top spot on the UK sales charts, so this announcement isn't too surprising. This is the first time the open-world series has taken place in America. It's set in the fictional Hope County, Montana after an attempt to arrest the leader of a doomsday cult goes awry.

In GameSpot's Far Cry 5 review, Edmond Tran praised the vast open-world exploration and precise gunplay, though he found some story missions to be a chore. Fortunately there appears to be lots to see and do, including some clever Easter eggs to find. Currently the first live event has you burning animals to a crisp. If you're thinking of picking it up, make sure to check out our tips for beginners.

Just a note.....i find it interesting that the "left" leaning wanted more politicizing of this game."polygon" for example. yet the last truly large scale cult that was politicized was JONESTOWN. In which hundreds of people died in a cyanide suicide debacle. That cult was embraced by the left including politicians currently in power. brown pelosi etc. They not only embraced this mad man they gave him actual power in the govt.

@jergernice1: The "left" just wanted to shoot hillbillies in the neck with a bow and arrow, and I think in that particular regard, they're not going to be disappointed. The only ones I see constantly trying to drag their diaper sloppy politics into it are people like yourself in a sad hope that we on the left are crying over this game not being a literal Trump shooting simulator.

Sorry guys, but your strawman liberal princess is in another castle.

I'm going to go back to shooting ignorant hicks in the neck with arrows now! Weeeee!

Can I jump straight into Farcry 5 without having played any prior games? I hadn't planned on it but seeing the positive feedback and realizing that besides GoW (which won't take that long I bet) there is no other game on my schedule for some time.

@Destructionzz: Yes, there are no links to other games save for a few Easter eggs and a recurring character. Any Far Cry is a separate world if you will, from other games.

@tiringpillow: I didn't exactly say that. I said there seemed to be no interest in the game leading right up to the launch of the game. Even now , just because it does well in the first two weeks doe not mean its going to break records. But admittedly it appears to be doing well. If it does well or not I truly could not care any less. If it does well great, if it doesn't thats fine to. I have FC1, 2 and 4. But have zero interest in 5. But I have no hate for the series as KillerC is trying to imply.

1. There was no argument.

2. They were wrong.

It's hilarious that you would chime in on a conversation you know nothing about.

@crusadernights: There was no conversation period. Spartan posted his opinion, I replied to him with my own opinion and that was as far as that went. The other fella replied to Spartan saying he agreed with him and that was that.

Sure I could of just accepted that I was right and left it at that but where is the fun in that? So I decided to rub it in their faces a bit.

@crusadernights: Best stay in the shallow end of the pool mate, you clearly can't handle the deep end. You want to voice your opinion that's fine but do yourself a favor and get the facts straight first.

Just making a fool out of yourself when you don't know what it is your talking about.

Good for them. A ton of work put into this game. Makes releases like "Sea of Thieves" seem even lazier somehow.

I applaud that they weren't ashamed to add '5' to the title. They usually stop numbering when it gets about that high.

I bought Primal instead while it was on sale on Steam. Same old Ubisoft open world game, but at least with Primal you're a bit more limited in combat and it does give a slightly different flavor to the game. 3 and 4 felt practically identical, and I felt like 5 would once again be the same.

Great game. So glad they chose not to shove politics down our throat in another video game. I was really confused why some people seemed to want that *cough* Polygon *cough*. Still plenty of satire in it if that's what you're looking for, it's just not in your face the whole time.

@Phoenix911: You don't have to be in your face to have a point of view, and you'd think a cult would have one. Instead it feels generic and impotent, contrary to what you'd expect with a group of supposedly charismatic extremists that take things into their own hands.

@girlusocrazy: I feel like you're talking about the story in general being lacking. That's true, but it's ubisoft so I don't go to their games looking for that. Not anymore anyway. Sticking political commentary in the game in some ham fisted way wouldn't fix that. Believe it or not, we had good stories in video games before 2016 when we apparently collectively decided everything had to have a political opinion. I don't disagree with you that the story wasn't the strongest part of the game though.

@Phoenix911: Yeah I'm basically disappointed that they had every opportunity to use current affairs in some context but did not. They didn't have to make a ham fisted broad representation. They could have represented pockets of perspectives in proper context without dictating an overall stance or being condescending. People do have perspectives, many of them exist without a single one being the ultimate correct perspective. There are different shades and this game had none.

But anyway maybe people aren't ready to consider that and would just start frothing if they see some other person who doesn't align completely with them. But that's part of the problem we have now in america and that's what would have made it interesting to me.

Yeah not everything has to be political, but when they chose to make a game in a real location for the first time instead of a fictitious one as in the past, to me it felt like they would have tried to ground the context of the game in reality as well.

All big game series will keep on doing better and better over the years since players grow in numbers and gets into gaming younger and younger...

A lot of parents couldn't care less about the PGs and buy any kind of games for their kids.
I do my best to keep my 12yo son away from violent titles but it seems like I'm keeping him aside from EVERY OTHER kids around him...
He still plays them at some other kids' home...

GTA V broke every single records there were to break and I'm pretty sure when they'll release a 6th, it'll be even bigger!
Gaming community grows so it's a pretty normal thing for all the upcoming titles to sell better as long as Devs don't screw up!

@blibdoolpoolp: It's better than good as far as I'm concerned. We seem to get a lot of shrieking complainers lately on these sites whenever a big game comes out, Fallout 4 was the same. You're the ultimate judge in the end. but for me it's the GOTY so far.
