Far Cry 4 creative director comments on controversial box art

The recently revealed shooter's box art has been called racist by some critics.

Some controversy has emerged over the box art for Far Cry 4, prompting Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson to comment on the matter in the hopes of clearing things up.

The box art, which is one of only two images released for the game so far, appears to show a white man sitting on the ruined remains of a statue while holding his hand on the head of a darker-skinned man. This has generated discussion over whether the game--or at least its box art, which is all the public has to go on at this point--could be racist. But according to Hutchinson, at least one of the criteria people have used to level criticism at the artwork is incorrect.

"Just so it's clear for those jumping to conclusions: He's not white and that's not the player," Hutchinson tweeted, adding a linking to a GamesIndustry.biz piece about the controversy over the box art.

This isn't the first time the issue of racism has come up with regard to a Far Cry game. Far Cry 3, which featured a caucasian protagonist who saves the inhabitants of a tropical island from a group of pirates, was criticized for being racist, as well as its use of torture. The game's writer, Jeffrey Yohalem, claimed in an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun that critics were simply missing the point.

We learned today, courtesy of a leak on Ubisoft's online store, that Far Cry 4 players assume the role of a character named Ajay Ghale who gets involved with a civil war in the country of Kyrat. Beyond that, we know almost nothing except that the game will feature "a lot more multiplayer" than its predecessor and that it'll be out on November 18 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

I fail to see how it's racist. Last I checked there was literally never any point at time where white people subjugated the people of what I would assume is something like Tibet/China/Mongolia/somewhere in the Steppes, in Asia - so it's not even like there exists a history of racial tension (excluding Japanese internment camps during WW2 which isn't the same as mainland "Asia"). White people are the "racial" minority on this planet, so get over it. Every time a character is white and any other character is not white, they call racism.

People who bring up racism and try to find racism in things where there is none intended, are the actual racists. End of story.

Not to mention - as GameFreak said below - the white haired guy is clearly "asian" if you actually look at his face. Stupid crying self-proclaimed crusaders. All they are doing is crying wolf again because it's Far Cry, not because of anything substantial. Far Cry made itself a target starting with FC2 when you killed "Africans", and these allegations will always be made against the franchise no matter what.

This game is basically going to have the same setting as Tomb Raider 2013 or Uncharted 2 - or both combined. So, those games were racist too, right?

" So, those games were racist too, right?"

Yes. Yes they were. Hell, even Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw made that observation. You are apparently blind to racist imagery, because you are white and experience "white" as standard for everything. Anyone who disagrees with you must be shut down or silenced, just as your ancestors did. You can play dumb and can dance around the obvious all you like; but really, you know better.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well things can still be racist even if they haven't have happened in history to cause any racial tensions, but I agree with you mostly... but people are stupid though and there is nothing racist about this... even if the person was of a different race of which he has his hand on... it still wouldn't mean its racist... and its stupid to imply something like that on which you have nothing to base your theory off of, so yeah I basically agree with you

@FuzzyPancakes @grenadehh No they can't. They can be racist if their sole purpose for existence is based on a difference of race, fictional or not, but that's making a lot of assumptions like you said.

<< LINK REMOVED >> well yeah... if I said I wanted to enslave all Asians because I hate them and they're stupid (I don't believe this its just an example, I'm actually 25% Asian) that would be racist... there is no history of it... but its still racist.

It shouldn't matter what color they are, the box art is meant to show the character in a certain light, if they were both the same skin color there would be no problem would there? its funny how some one actually looked for the colors in the skin to figure out weather this was racist or not too... which generally says that the person who said this is probably pretty racist them self. I didn't even think about the box art until I saw this article, and they actually both appear to be of the same race to me... the one kneeling has dirt marks and things on him which makes him appear darker.

Also there are a lot of racist movies that were intended to show racism during the time, and also movies which have racist characters intentionally... which did not have any problems... so what if the box art is racist (btw its not), if it is meant to depict a certain character in the game and actually adds depth into the story to show something deeper I don't understand why some one would be upset about it... its not a kids game (even though kids probably play it its rated M for mature... they probably shouldn't if they can't handle it... same for some adults... unfortunately -_- )

@FuzzyPancakes

"in a certain light"

Yea, in a certain BLONDE light. You know exactly what's effed up about the image, you're not fooling anyone but yourself.
If someone finds it offensive, it's because it IS offensive. Get off your high-horse and try gaining a modicum of self-awareness.

Or maybe it's just another smart publicity stunt. 'Cause the racist thing.. I don't see it. Hell, if one guy was black someone would have made a point. But all I see is a reason to get us talking about a game that hasn't been released yet. Makes some of us want to buy it even more in the end huh?

It would seem Human stupidity knows no bounds...

In the promo picture I see two Asians.
However even if they weren't there is no issue in the rational realm as they are both Human. Skin colour is irrelevant. And even if the Man in the pink suit is racist, what of it? I doubt this man is supposed to represent anything just and moral in the game's World. Simply viewing two different skin shades and automatically seeing an issue is actually promoting racism.

What Political Correctness has done to society is brainwash them into being too sensitive so they focus all their attention on trivial non-issues rather than the REAL issues facing the World today such as corrupt and tyrannical Government, Wars and the poor treatment of the Environment.

@cynicritic Exactly. Modern fascism at work. Racism is a learned behavior plain and simple. It's something that has to be taught to you. As plenty of pundits/comedians have said, such as David Cross, "no baby comes out of the womb and their first words are "The **** have all the money!" for example. The political correct crusade is seriously just passive conditioning towards some sort of liberty-free, controlled, potentially twisted version of a theocracy where counselors and feel-good officials take the place of priests and religious officials in a world where feel good-lets-all-get-along correctness replaces religion.

See I couldn't even say Joos because GameSpot auto-moderated the comment based on that word alone, ignoring the context in which it was used as an example.

It would be great if we could live in some sort of Ayn Rynd Anthem world - at least as far as the novella does not distinguish between skin color - but obviously we're not there yet. I don't know how prevalent racism still is, but I do know that for most people I've ever gotten familiar with, they don't give a crap what color someones skin is. They care who the person is, what they have made of themselves, what actions they take in their life - that's what they judge on.

But just like Anthem or the movie Equilibrium, turning the world into some weird utopia that has ultimately snuffed out what makes people unique - for the greater good - has also completely screwed it up.

The issue of whether or not the cover is racist is a moot point after stating that the man on the cover is not white. Even if he is, it's still unclear if what is shown is racism. I mean, I can see the argument in favor of racism, but there are plenty of good counterarguments as well. I don't believe the intention is to show a white man subjugating a man of color, however. Regardless, the protagonist of the game is not white anyways, so it becomes increasingly tough to make a racism argument.

In short, I call bullshit on the argument.

Well this is just another case of someone feeling offended and then deciding to make a huge deal about it. But hey the guy is not white so the problem is solved right? As long as its not some white hand we can all breath a sigh of relief.

<< LINK REMOVED >> To me the republican party (or atleast many of its members) is notoriously racist, I have not noticed it that much in the democratic party though... I am independent, I don't really favor one party over the other, I did want to vote for Obama the second time, but I wasn't old enough because Mitt Romney was criticizing his own health care plan... which really shot him down... and he was terrible in the debates, but that's because he was trying to be entirely 100% conservative even though he really isn't... and that also made it worse. But other than that... I still don't understand what it has to do with racism

@FuzzyPancakes @grenadehh @balrogbane You'll find the feel-good, bleeding-heart crowd is composed almost entirely of modern "liberals", if you start paying attention. And politics has literally everything to do with racism.

<< LINK REMOVED >> hell, im part korean and get all kinds of racist asian comments all the time. everything from people calling me jackie chan to vietnamese and someone even called me mexican once and you dont hear me whining about it. ill just laugh with them and correct their mistake and be on my way and if things dont work out that way, fine, you cant expect everyone to share the exact same views on the world as you. i swear, and people wonder why there's a lack of creativity in movies and especially music these days. people are afraid to try certain things in fear of offending someone.
