Fallout Shelter Makes $5.1 Million in First Two Weeks, Research Firm Says

Fallout's first-ever mobile game is, unsurprisingly, a big success.

The iOS App Store's sales charts had already suggested that Fallout Shelter was a success, but now we have a more specific idea of how well it's done.

According to research firm SuperData, Shelter earned $5.1 million in its first two weeks of availability alone. While Apple does get a 30 percent cut, that's still a very impressive figure, particularly considering Bethesda has said Shelter wasn't designed in order to make money.

And, indeed, as anyone who's played the game can tell you, the free-to-play game's microtransactions are limited to one specific aspect of the game. You're not restricted from playing as much as you want, and the only things to spend money on are optional lunchboxes, which reward you with in-game items and characters. You even earn these occasionally by simply playing, and it's no doubt thanks in part to this player-friendly approach that the game has been so successful.

Announced and then released at the start of E3 week, Fallout Shelter quickly rose to the number one spot on both the Top Free and Top Grossing charts of the iOS App Store. Currently, the game is available only on iOS, though an Android version is on the way.

Last month, Shelter added its first Fallout 4 character. Since then, it's also received its first feature update, which introduced a photo mode that lets you easily capture and share images of the Vault you've designed.

Fallout 4, the next proper entry in the Fallout series, is due out in November for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Stupidity...

Well I bought everything, have hundreds of packs to open and didn't pay a single penny :)

ps: I would never pay a penny for that crap as the whole game would probably be worth only 50 cent or less. At least I have lot more complicated games and have to sell them for 30 cents or little more...

The fact that iPhone users are so willing to spend real currency on overpriced toys should come as no surprise to anyone.

cool. I haven't spent a single cent on it and I'm having a lot of fun, plus earning Game Center achievements... that's all that matters...

that way they can make more free games with achievements!!

(best part is that it doesn't even have ads...)

So weird how they always make stuff for IOS and then leave Android which has 80% of the market for 6 months later when no one will care any more.

So many idiots that fall for microtransactions. You can play this without purchasing anything, so why are people so stupid.

@digitm64: because maybe they don't have time to grind? I haven't purchased anything in this game, but I know how it feels - I remember when I played Magic (15 years ago or so) and I urged to buy booster packs... just to get new cards and see what I'd get... maybe people want more lunchboxes just to have the pleasure of opening them?!

Like most mobile games, it's manipulative and the fun tapers off far too quickly. Is it less manipulative than other mobile games? Perhaps, but make no mistake, it's still a crap mobile game with shite mechanics at heart. Enjoyable at first, sure, but you soon reach a point where there's just nothing to do. Give it a few days and all of a sudden there's no more challenge and all mechanics are explored and predictable. Supporting your vault becomes easy to a fault, there's nothing in the way of exciting rooms to unlock, random 'threats' are a distraction at best, and the *only* thing left to excite you is unlocking more outfits and weapons -- anything noteworthy of which becomes so rare in the game's lunchboxes that it can take days just to find something you haven't unlocked before. And you guessed it, you can pay real world money for more chances at that one piece of fleeting joy. Hooray, Bethesda.

@tarp_master: In fairness, this is one of the few that you can play and enjoy for free. The "paying" options don't even necessarily let you advance more quickly.

@tarp_master: But it's thanks to them you get to play for free. Be a little grateful to them at least. Hearthstone, DOTA, Team Fortress 2, etc. Without them, we wouldn't be able to enjoy those games for free.

@elheber: That's true, the money that they foolishly throw away their parent's money onto their phone helps to keep the game alive so that us players who don't actually spend a single cent can enjoy them.

@elheber:Cynical? It's just plain greedy, letting others pay so you can enjoy your game for free. Not that I'm paying anything.

@ScottOakley: That makes no sense, if anything the paying players are the greedy ones, having to buy up everything in the game just so they can have a feeling of being superior towards others. Meanwhile, players such as myself are just going at our pace and enjoying the games for what we can get out out of it without having to spend any unnecessary money.

@tarp_master: Haha you are totally right, however in Holland greedy stands for not wanting to pay a dime for anything, I guess I got confused. But there is nothing wrong to buy a card pack once in a while for support. On the other hand, it's Blizzard, they have all the money they need.

@ScottOakley: Greedy? No, I'm frugal. However, games have in the past convinced me to buy-in to microtransactions before, and I am not wagging my finger at people who played that same game but didn't buy-in. How bitter a life that would be.

I played it for a few days then quit since I've already got a few base-building games going at once and this one doesn't do much different other than having the Fallout name on it. Fun, but not for the long run. Log in, collect, tap here, send this guy there, open this, move this guy and girl there, repeat.

Sad, I've stopped playing it. It's interesting the first few days, but I've noticed once you get up to 100 dwellers the game gets buggy and crashes at that point you've opened most unlocks, lunch boxes are few and far between. I'm shocked anyone would pay to play this.

@npgr: The difference is the other companies force you to pay or wait a week for a building to be completed, or they lock off a chunk of the game entirely. Bethesda has made the entire game free, no pay wall, no waiting for things to be built. You have the option to buy lunchboxes if you want, but you get them free for playing. Bethesda has done a free to play game right.

@npgr: There is a difference between not understanding why this game does F2P right and in a fair way, and being unable to accept that this F2P game does things right in a fair way.
I suggest you reconsider your approach, it's not giving you any credibility.

@Warlord_Irochi: accepting free to play on this level will only entice company's to push it even more. In society what's acceptable today wasn't fifty years ago and this will be no different, only the timescales will differ. Don't try and patronise me with your silly little comments either. You want a grown up and mature conversation we can have one. If not don't reply as I won't either.

@wookiepower4k: I haven't played it, but from what I understand this game does microtransactions in the most humane way yet. The game doesn't have timers that are sped up by paying money, instead you get card packs with random goodies. Using money (again, only from what I've seen) doesn't appear to be necessary for enjoyment.

Hearthstone is another game that does this system very well, very fairly. We have to celebrate games that do the right thing, and not blindly attack when they are profitable. Making money isn't evil. Doing evil things to make money is evil. And it seems this game isn't doing evil things. So long as that's fine, let them make money.

@Warlord_Irochi: Wookie has a point this sort of easy money is turning heads in the gaming industry. Konami pretty much destroyed Metal gear and screwed over Kojiama to head down the mobile road. It wont be long before others follow suit.
