Now Playing: Another Fallout: New Vegas-Style Collaboration Is Unlikely - GameSpot Daily

Obsidian Entertainment, hot off the heels of being acquired by Microsoft, has announced when we'll see the first glimpse of its next project. The studio's homepage now shows a series of teaser images counting down to Thursday's Game Awards.

The images show retro-style advertisements from two fake sponsors: Spacer's Choice and Auntie Cleo's. Spacer's Choice attaches to a retro-futuristic gun, while Auntie Cleo's attaches to a collection of ointments and creams. The images don't tell us much about the project, but they do set a particular tone.

Each of the fake ads teases more news at The Game Awards, the awards event coming this Thursday hosted by Geoff Keighley. The show has been teasing ten new game announcements along with updates for existing games. And of course, it will offer lots of celebrity guests and presenters, and the awards themselves.

The game is set to be published by Private Division, a new indie label from Take-Two. It's not clear if that publishing deal will be impacted by Microsoft's purchase of Obsidian. The studio has long specialized in RPGs--having made Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and Pillars of Eternity--so whatever this retro-futurist space theme is, it's likely to fit into that genre.

It's called Outer Worlds and it's a sci-fi rpg kind of in the style of an old rpg called Space 1889. It's a strange mix, but it could be fun. It's Obsidian though, so just like Bethesda it will need a dozen patches and player mods to get rid of the bugs. Also, can someone tell me why, when the average age of a video gamer is 35, Gamespot has nothing but kids running it?

@loveblanket: Obsidian's last few games have been pretty smooth and polished.

@Mogan: Not coincidentally, it happened once they were no longer at the whims of a publisher like Bethesda.

@loveblanket: As for the kids. I follow Gamespot since 1998 (lost original account), while I followed Gamespy. The Gamespy guys went all to IGN (IGN bought Gamespy just to get them out of the way, and hired their top guys), thus, IGN is the way to go these days for some reviewers but the trend is more and more them also hiring kids. Gamespot kept a lot of the experienced guys but apparently they did not go along too well over time during structural changes, the reason they all left. The only reason I am still here because every day since 1998 is because I have it imprinted in me to type www.gamespot.com . It took me weeks to let go of www.gamespy.com (best gaming review site ever). IGN is ok but its new website style/layout is complete garbage.

@loveblanket:

Most of ththe experienced Gamespot staff appear to have been either poached or have moved on to better gigs. Losing some of their older staff like Kevin van Ord and Danny O’Dwyer really hurt the site. Edmond Tran from Gamespot Australia has been with the company for a quite a while. He’d have to be in his 30 now surely.

Still, your point stands: the average age of Gamespot staff is lower than the average age of gamers so pretty much all the users of this site feel like they’re being spoken to by children.

@el_swanno: Kinda a bold assumption to assume that the majority of users/gamers are aged 40+ ... I'd actually say the largest demographic of gamers would be those who grew up with the PlayStation One era and are now in their 20's or 30's.

@gamingdevil800:

Not sure if you are responding to the wrong comment. I didn’t say anything about the average age of gamers being 40+.

I believe the avaerage of gamers was reported as being around 34ish about 10 years ago. Around that time my father got into games. He was 69 when he played his first game of Second Life. He then got into some flight sim and Tiger Woods Golf.

Why is it every story about Obsidian calls them "Fallout developer" in the headline? People know who Obsidian is. Gamespot, please increase the quality of your writing.

@Thanatos2k: It's bait just like the way all the games journalist sites always use the tag line "Souls Like" "Like Dark Souls" etc

Obsidian has already stated this new game will be multiplat since it's a 2K title. MS can buy the rights back from 2K but, for now, there has been nothing to suggest it won't be.

I love how Obsidian basically took Bethesda's engine for NV and Bioware's engine for KOTOR2 and they call them the developers of these games. Obsidian is known for taking games from other devs and making cheaply made buggy sequels to them. I am not excited for this new IP. Why Microsoft would waste time and money buying them is beyond me.

To be fair both those games came out a long time ago and maybe a lot has happened for them since. Based on their body of work since...probably not.

@fud_sang: You aren't even smart enough to know the difference between developing a game and using an engine and you think anyone will take you seriously? smh. Good luck with that.

@fud_sang: Is this a troll post? Those games were no more buggy then the previous games, were arguably better, and their newer games have been just as great.

@Barighm: I hate south park frankly and thats the only game they've made since that I have heard of after NV. But if you want to tell me that KOTOR 2 was better than KOTOR I will call you a fool because it wasn't it. It was an awful let down and yes indeed it was a TON more buggy then the original.

So no it was not a troll post. Those guys belong under the bridge.

@fud_sang: KotOR2 is totally better than KotOR1. Not because KotOR1 was at all bad, but because KotOR2 is still the best written Star Wars game out there. Just like Mask of the Betrayer is still the best written D&D video game, and New Vegas is the best written Fallout.

Writing great RPGs is what Obsidian is known for.

@fud_sang: LMFAO, I guess you forgot all about Pillars of Eternity (they made 2 of them now) and it is one of the more highly regarded RPGs in the Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter vein. So if not a troll post, it is at least one of the least informed ones on the subject.

@dlCHIEF58: Read up I'm pretty sure I said south park was all I knew about. Of course having a dated PC, you don't get to play PC games so you kinda stop paying attention because if not you'd get depressed (better everything on PC yes I know). But hey consider me pleasantly informed.

I liked NV a lot so to hear they had life beyond those buggy games is good news. Guess they got better. Frankly I pictured them trying their hand at a Fable reboot.

Looks a little Fallout-esque. Cheeky advertisements, slightly retro....even "stay tuned for" instead of "please stand by."

Might be just what the doctor ordered, these days.

@knolddasker: It's probably not going to be Xbox exclusive, since it's a branch of Take-Two that's publishing it.
