Fallout: New Vegas Dev "Would Love" To Make Another Fallout Game

People really want Obsidian to make another Fallout.

Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment would "certainly love to" make another game in Bethesda's acclaimed RPG series. New Vegas director Josh Sawyer said in a recent interview that he and other staffers at the studio would be jazzed about returning to the post-apocalyptic series after making the beloved New Vegas.

"I would certainly love to work on a Fallout game again," Sawyer told IGN. "I know there are tons of people at Obsidian who would love to work on a Fallout game again. If we were given the chance, we would certainly love to."

No Caption Provided

Sawyer went on to say that he frequently gets asked about Obsidian making another Fallout game. He said he fields "more questions about Fallout than anything else." And there is good reason; New Vegas was well received.

GameSpot's review scored it a 7.5/10. Review Kevin VanOrd said at the time, "Fallout: New Vegas is periodically awesome and consistently compelling. If you've got the stomach for some technological lunacy, this is one gamble that will pay off."

New Vegas was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart previously talked about his potential plans for New Vegas 2.

"I think if we were to do Fallout: New Vegas 2--or just a new Fallout--we would probably separate it from what the internal team at Bethesda's doing," Urquhart said said in 2013. "We'd keep it on the West Coast, because we're West Coast people. They're East Coast, so it makes sense."

"And we need an interesting confined area. So I mean, it could be LA. Fallout LA," he added at the time. "That could be interesting. It'd probably be The Boneyard, which is from Fallout 1. It could be very different. It could be almost a Walking Dead meets Fallout-like thing because of all the radiation."

The latest Fallout game was Fallout 4, which came out in November 2015, and sold like crazy. A Game of the Year edition is coming next week. As for Obsidian, one of the studio's upcoming projects is Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, which is due out in 2018.

Given how massively popular the Fallout series is, publisher Bethesda will surely announce more games in due time. But whether or not Obsidian will get the job to make a new entry could depend on a number of factors.

Would you like to see Obsidian make a sequel to New Vegas? Let us know in the comments below!

I am squarely in the "Three was best" camp, but I do see what others are saying here about the writing in NV. The factions/characters in NV were well written in their own way, but the way they were presented undermined the good writing. Every time you met one, they either a) shot at you because you allied with someone else already or b) sucked you into a story line that, while cool, didn't make sense in an RPG. What's you're character going to say? "Hey, Veronica, we've been through so very, very much. We've fought and killed and lost and loved and become such tight friends. But hey I just met this ghoul, and, even though I barely know him, I'm totally going to be betray everything we have for him, ok? Ok."

Didn't work. Which is a shame because there was SO much good writing there.

@sellingthings: First, I'm jealous of you, as I'd love to play these for the first time again. You're gonna love them.

Advice: Explore everywhere. Like, everywhere. So many good moments are found in little places, little three house towns, caves, random buildings. A lot of those places don't appear, even as quests. FO4, there were icons for everything. Map looked like someone spilled icons on it. FO3 especially, you'll look at the map and it'll look like there are large gaps of nothing. Don't be fooled. The map is packed with great little nuggets of fantastic gameplay and story for those who go nosing around.

This is especially true of vaults. There are vaults, and you should go in every single one of them. They're all different, and they're all amazing. There's one that has one of the most mind bending, thought provoking...levels? I guess it's a level...I've ever played. You'll know it when you see it.

Listen to Galaxy News Radio, at least sporadically. The DJ will let you know, a little, of places that are interesting. Especially one where, and he might have been on jet at the time, there are LOTS of trees.

And enjoy. They're both games that you'll lose many, many hours to, and they're worth every single one.

IMO, New Vegas was the best "modern" Fallout, better than Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. Yes, there were issues and hilarious bugs, but as a whole it was a great experience with a really solid plot.

I hope that Bethesda will give Obsidian a green light to do another spin-off.

@sellingthings: Surley it is. Just like Brotherhood and Revelations were seen as spin offs from ACII even being two huge games.

New Vegas was shit compared to Fallout 3. They just brought a lot of factions in New Vegas and you had to build up their trust and resolve their childish issues. The storyline started to vanish to some point to only appear to the very end. Fallout 3 had more anchor points and stayed true to the story. The methodology of New Vegas was applied to Skyrim were you had again too many factions and so on. The only thing that made Skyrim awesome was its lore. Medieval lore added Dragons were compelling. Lore in future after apocalyptic world? -meh. My final thought is that I don't want a new fallout game from Obsidian.

Obviously if another fallout came along everyone would hop right on it no matter what people say. Bring it on already! Too bad its not in the works already.

Its likely the only way we will ever get a full Fallout game again, not the half arsed games Bethesda are churning out, But it wont happen Bethesda/Zenimax are probably aiming to make a fortune off selling mods for the next few titles, and a game that needs less mods to be good isn't something they will want.

They've been saying this for years, and while I would love for them to make a new FO, I just don't think it's going to happen. Bethesda Softworks used to publish games made by studios that weren't owned by ZeniMax fairly often, but as time has passed they've done it less and less to the point of nearly not doing it at all today. Sadly about the only way Obsidian would have a chance at making a new FO would be if they were purchased by ZeniMax. Obsidian has made it clear in the past that they are open to the idea of being bought by ZeniMax, but right now ZeniMax doesn't seem to be interested.

@Iamkalell: Well, I have to agree here. Bethesda Softworks is only publishing games from their own studios (Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane Studios, id Software, MachineGames...)

Fallout NV was the best Fallout so far, so I would love to see Obsidian get another chance at the franchise.

@DavidNChin: I liked FNV, though imo the best one was F3...that was, and remains, my favourite ever video game (and I've been around for many, many years so there's some competition there.

I liked FNV, but the most recent time I played it I got hit with a bug; I had to go to a certain point to progress the story, but every time I got to that point about 4 or 5 of those Caesar soldiers turned up and hammered me. I just couldn't beat them. I tired literally about 20 times, with different weapons and with different companions. Sadly every save point I tried lead to the same unwinnable battle. Then i stopped and sold it. End of story. sadface.

But yes we definitely need another Fallout, and I don't care if it's from Bethesda or Obsidian.

@Mogan: open world game ie go where you want whenever you want there should not be invisible walls sure have a cliff you cant scale because of how steep it is but if there is a hill in the middle of the map that they wont let you traverse because you suddenly hit a wall that mogan is bad game design and dont get me started on some of the dlc and clearly nickle and dimed characters.

ps dont get me wrong I enjoyed the game for what it was.

@locke90: Ehh, whatever you want to think. I don't think an open world game needs to have no impassible terrain. I'm more than willing to take the guided tour in around New Vegas, because the story is fantastic. Once I start trying to climb mountains that were clearly not designed to be climbed, I'm probably going to end up seeing behind the curtain (or under the world) and ruining the magic.

And New Vegas's DLC was great.

@Mogan: old world blues was a top dlc it had a b grade movie feel to it which I enjoyed lonesome road on the otherhand was reliant on metaphor too much and gave you a backstory that overrode the one that I had prepared for my character prior to playing the game the first time around if anything the backstory that lonesome road introduced could have been handled way better than being removed and shoehorned in at a point of the game where it simply didnt make sense I have the feeling that lonesome road was part of cut content that they wanted to add later.

Not me. Fallout 5 was an extremely repetitive game that tried to do too much crap at the expense of action. I'm done with the series.

I hope so. wasn't a huge fan of the setting, but they did right with the story, gameplay, and freedom of it. L.A. would be a great setting, get some heavy NCR stuff and a lot of interesting places.

Like others said if they did make one they better not be rushed.

I often see people give Obsidian shit for FNV because of the countless bugs at release and to this day. Fact of the matter is, Obsidian managed to put FNV together in just shy of 18 months. Bethesda would be crazy to not allow Obsidian to develop any more Fallouts. Time and time again, the people of Obsidian/Black Isle/Interplay (a good chunk of the same people throughout the past 20 years) have proven that they have always made the better Fallout and the better RPG. Bethesda needs to get off the pipe and the let the real RPG developers put together their Fallout content.

If Obsidian gets another contract job, they need to get it in writing that they will not be overly rushed by the parent/publishing company. As good as their games are, imagine how great Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and Alpha Protocol would have been if they hadn't been rushed.

@altairdarius: It definitely didn't meet all my expectations, but I still enjoyed it. For me, the story was worth the sometimes funky gameplay. SEGA rushed the game, then they actually refused to let Obsidian work on it after they pushed back the release date from the rush. It was literally just sitting there for months and Obsidian wasn't allowed to polish or bug fix.

@jessie82: Play the Metro Series. Its basically Fallout through a Russian filter. Not open world though, but the setting is excellent.

@Subaru1980: I'd kill for that. The immersion in that game was absolutely insane. Every time one of the storms came around I can't tell you how exciting that was.

I never beat the game I am ashamed to say, but it was a brilliant game series that is for sure. Totally deserves a new-gen sequel. Doubt we will ever get it though, especially with the cluster that came around a few years ago.

Would be a pretty smart move to make another though, would definitely appeal to fans of Metro and Fallout I would say.

@jessie82: true but they only deal with factions issues not saving the world problems. in this way they can build stupid quest more easily and never thinking about harder to create a deep storyline that makes sense.

@jessie82: I think Bethesda has made that pretty clear that the franchise will never leave the U.S. At least outside of a quick mission or something such as the Operation Anchorage VR deal.

Too many staples of the franchise will be entirely missing if they dedicated it to something else. Hell we only know a little bit of the outside world such as China (There is some still living there, I forget the name of the cancelled game that was going to go into it. Not really canon that AFAIK).

No pipboy, vaults, Brotherhood, Enclave, possibly some weapons never appearing like the fat boy (IDK if they U.S. ever did export their weapons), supermutants, everything which makes Fallout. Then let's not forget how much left there is within the U.S. that is waiting to be explored or fleshed out.

I'd kill for one set in Russia, but they'd be giving up so much and creating so much original lore that the whole entire development would be a huge undertaking. Hell we don't even know the full extent of how much actually survived outside of the U.S., I mean you can claim that there is something left in China, but the absolute devastation to them was far more than the U.S. ever sustained.

Maybe one day it will be considered, but it is very unlikely outside of a mission or some DLC that covers it lightly.

I don't like the sound of New Vegas 2 go somewhere else in the US if you make another one. I do suspect that before the New Vegas release bethesda was planning on buying obsidian but due to the companies lay offs and financial trouble they obviously thought it was not worth the effort for whatever reason.
