Fallout: New Vegas Dev Interested in Doing Fallout 4 Follow-up

Obsidian says the team is "always up for working on a Fallout."

A developer from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, has said the team is interested in working on another entry in the post-apocalyptic open-world RPG series.

Eric Fenstermaker, who is a writer and designer at Obsidian, was asked on Twitter if the studio "could do another Fallout game, Fallout New Orleans, perhaps."

"I'm always up for working on a Fallout," he replied, "I think most of us generally are. [It's a] really fun property to work with."

Fallout: New Vegas was released after Bethesda's Fallout 3 and garnered praise for its faction and reputation systems. Since then, Obsidian has released South Park: The Stick of Truth--to much critical acclaim--and Dungeon Siege 3.

It also used Kickstarter to crowdfund the development of Pillars of Eternity, a classic RPG in the same vein as Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, and Icewind Dale. Pillars of Eternity received an 8/10 from GameSpot.

Whether Bethesda is interested in letting another studio work on Fallout again is yet to be seen. Until then, there is still plenty of Fallout 4 content in the pipeline.

In November 2015, game director Todd Howard teased the upcoming Fallout 4 expansion packs, saying the direction Bethesda takes with them will be shaped by fan feedback.

"This game is huge, but it's not just this launch," Howard said. "It's going to be well deep into next year. It's like the game is done [does air quotes] but it's not done, because until everybody plays it, it's not really done. Because what they bring to it is really important; we're going to see what people like, what they want more of, what they want different, and we're going to do that."

Fallout 4's DLC was announced in September 2015, before the main game was released. At the time, Bethesda said it didn't know what form the expansions would take, only that they would deliver $40 of value in a $30 package. As of yet further details on the expansions have not been provided. The first of these expansions will be released in 2016.

Fallout 4 launched on November 10 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

I've enjoyed 3, New Vegas, and 4.
Wouldn't mind them doing a follow-up akin to New Vegas.

I do find the article funny, though, as it could essentially have been titled "A developer shows interest in getting paid for working."

Not sure why all the hate for Fallout when the half the people playing it nowadays were 12 when the original came out. Fallout 3 and New Vegas both have there strengths and weaknesses, with that said it's a matter of opinion on which is a "better" game and get quite sick of seeing how these games suck or don't live up to the hype. Fallout is an amazing game and isn't for everyone, but why complain about it? That doesn't help anyone, if Obsidian made another Fallout it's a win win for the gaming industry because we need more RPG games like Fallout and Witcher. Bring it Obsidian!

Obsidian if you do make a new Fallout game on the new engine and make it as good as New Vegas or even better, then i will find you and will pay you all my money and i will praise you for the rest of my life.

Bethesda fucked up with Fallout 4, you guys can turn this around and make it better.

@veteran_alpha yeah. when i thought bethesda couldn't be worst, fallout 4 is the shallowest, laziest, most boring game they ever make, quest design wise and structure wise:

I havent quite gotten into fallout 4. It didnt grab me like 3 did almost immediately in fact in the first few missions I found myself looking forward to the end of each one so I could play something else like. I'll give it another shot later. I'll have to finish jt before dark souls 3 comes out.

why is everyone complaining about Fallout 4?! it was an awesome game. It had its problems (the story in particular) but you can't deny you had at least some fun playing it. New Vegas was great, but 4 was the best game Bethesda has probably ever made tbh...i'm not saying Obsidian shouldn't do another one, in fact that would be incredible especially with the new graphics (please new game engine oh my god) but don't be so quick to bash Fallout 4 it was still a damn good game.

@bfcochran16: Morrowind was far more memorable of a game than Fallout 4. The unique setting it had, the characters, the (at the time) amazing graphics and open world. It was something completely new and different for an rpg.

Fallout 4? It's pretty much fallout 3, with the same lack of decent story or characters. The new gameplay elements (IE base building) seem tacked on and like something meant as a diversion rather then something meant to really be a part of the game and story.

Fallout : NV is great because Obsidian knows what "rpg" fans like in an rpg, GOOD stories, interesting characters, and most of all GOOD Choices and ways to get through the game.

@jaoman9: Are you fucking joking? Do you want interesting and unique quests where actual decisions matter and massively impact the world? Or do you want another "run here, kill ghouls/raiders/super mutants, get loot, run back, get caps, repeat" with "fantastic dialogue like YES/NO/SARCASTIC YES/QUESTION"? Fallout 4 is an abomination of a Fallout where they changed the game into another mindless shooter with no soul or depth. Fallout New Vegas was a true Fallout game unlike the shit Bethesda did with the franchise. You can't even be fucking evil in Fallout 4 ffs.

Why so much love for NV? I thought it was great until i got to New Vegas itself and was like, this is it? It's super small and that small area was further sliced into zones.

@MuffintopX: That was due to the consoles limitations, they had stated that New Vegas was much bigger in their earlier designs.

@phillybro806: It's shocking but Fallout 4 actually followed the same path as Destiny did for me.

Started out well. I was actually enjoying it for a time. Then I started to feel like everything was the same. Not enough variety. I kept at it in the hope it got better. Eventually after many hours of it not getting better boredom started. Kept at it a bit longer and now I'm totally and utterly done with the game.

Don't even have the desire to go back and carry on exploring.

@veteran_alpha: I think IF Witcher 3 hadn't come out this year it might have managed to excite me more but Fallout 4 felt SO flat compared to Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 has basically taken the bar smashed it into a thousand pieces and then carved its own bar out of Fiend Horn and Drowner Skin.

I think it is going to be a while till someone surpasses that on the scale CDProjekt Red did.

what the hell guys, why is everyone complaining about fallout 4? yes it has its stuff, but thats the thing about fallout, its clunky and harsh on the player and its rough at times, its the fallout dudes... some dude even said "there are some places that are too dark in the game".... dude, its the fallout... its bugginess and glitchiness are also part of fallout's charm, and take a moment and ask yourself how many games out there have that? charm, and fallout had it all the way since fallout 1 on pc, they already had everything, they just lacked a propper medium to punch the audience with.

now, talking about the obsidian thing, i played both, fo3 and nv, and honestly, i found fallout 3 so revolutionary, but fallout new vegas is more enchanting, its got more irony, its just have added mechanics its fallout 3.8 after all those expansions xD

then fallout 4, yes, its lacking a little charm, that is true, but the game is already there, it is packed, so dense with buildings, cars, junk everywhere, enemies, the setup is done, how about if obsidian came thru and they developed some big ass DLC? like old world blues (damn)

all in all, i believe its just a matter of time, we didnt have to wait that long after it was announced, after YEARS of silence, and when they do its only a couple of weeks away, i believe you all are a bunch of ungrateful d-bags, im going to wait on the DLC and buy it, wether or not its from obsidian and just play the game, because i find it fun, i like to explore all of it, it helps me with my OCD.

@captnforever: Yes but most Bethesda open world games in the past had a half decent world and set of side quests to get stuck into which made up for the bugs and overall dodgy world.

Fallout 4 is just boring with absolutely nothing interesting to discover.

@dexda: the game at this point needs user input and a patch to start turning it in a particular way, theres mixed feelings about fallout, some got bored of it, well, its the same mechanics as other fallouts, do you even click bro? im playing on survival dificulty, im a little disapointed in dificulty level, but thats it, i thought they would make it like nv survival, that was the real meaning of HARD.

now theres stuff that need to be fixed, that is true, but hey, the game is huge, you dont expect a game with such big amounts of variables to be perfect at launch, and if they didnt launch when they did hoping to polish it then they may aswell never release it cause it would look "dated" (f-you graphic fags), instead you add a bug tracking system, let millions of people do the thing, you start seeing what works and what doesnt, and then you add around what works and so the game turns into a well polished and oiled machine.

people gave hell to fo3 at first, and after a couple of expansions and stuff, it went goty...

so yeah, the game may be slow (for some, not for me) and easy (kinda) but it is still super rewarding to clear a subway station and get rewarded with a killer armor piece or a killer legendary gun and then tunning it at bench and stuff, its fun game and i want more of it, and god knows that by the time the DLC is around the corner my character will be so pimp that im going to surf throught those dlc just making a hell of a mess out of everyone, and then reloading my last save and playing it like a civilized human being...

@captnforever: Yeah but that is what I mean.

Clearing a station is generally killing a load of enemies you've already killed before.

Picking up mainly junk for a crafting system that is weak.

Picking up guns that are all the same 10 guns in the game with slightly different mods.

The legendary items are just a normal piece of armour/weapon with a slight stat change.

Just feels like you are doing the same thing, killing the same enemies, collecting the same old loot.

Which is especially bad considering that the amount of lore in the game is seriously lacking as well. You break into houses, safes, terminals and all you get are a few tit bits of useless information. Almost none of which are particularly interesting and don't lead onto any interesting quests. The most I've ever found was a map location for a miscellaneous fetch quest.

Even Salem's Museum of Witchcraft was lame:

You go into the museum and have to kill a Deathclaw (which I guessed the second the building shook). Which I'd already fought about 10 times at that point. Then pick up an egg and either need to take it back to its nest or a bot in Diamond City. The bot takes it off of you and gives you a few caps or you take it back to the nest and can get a poxy Deathclaw glove. That is the entire mission! Utterly pointless. Boring ass mission.

They could have done ANYTHING with that awesome town. Salem is DRENCHED in awesome real world history and this was the best they could come up with?!?!

I miss the time when you could go into a building just for the hell of it and uncover a massive underground conspiracy theory involving the entire common wealth. You know large pieces of significant fictional history that has depth and humour and significance.

Like in Fallout 3 by talking to the lady in the shop at the start and being her Guinea Pig you can gain limb regen' for your efforts. Or the side quest where you can blow up the whole of Megaton!

Where are THOSE awesome missions?

@dexda: i understand your point and i agree, the game is lacking, however it seems as bethesda did as far as developing a huge sandbox, a very detailed one, visually at least and had to skip a bit on lore, wich is not the same as story-telling to wich i believe at some extent has been excelent, at least the main quest, altho a bit short.

i believe that if they manage to add some online borderland-style capabilities to the game and then taking them to levels packed with monsters and a boss fight in the end, say a huge legendary deathclaw or a swarn of legendary bugs or stuff like that woudl be cool, like dungeon instances, but they should be super hard and the rewards should be awesome as hell.

i totally agree that the game needs more variety in the craft system, but dude, they did confirmed it was going to support mods in consoles, so thats a completely good sign that the "lacking" will somehow dissapear. i can only hope doe

@captnforever: The world is fine but the stuff in the world is so boring I've given up on the game entirely.

Mods are not an excuse for making a half arsed game to start with. I pay for THEIR game, not the game of some amateur in his bedroom.

The map and the world has TONNES of potential and at times this game does give hints at what it could be capable of yet it didn't deliver its full potential at any point while I was playing.

I hope they do, I loved NV and preferred it to 3, they added a lot of extra and intuitive features I feel Bethesda ignored in 4. Like the unarmed arsenal has gone to barebones with what, just a power fist and knuckles, where is the ballistic fist and the boxing gloves? The companion wheel that allowed your followers to be passive and only shoot if you shoot is gone, now your idiot followers give away your location every time

I find Fallout 4 very addicting and frustrating all at the same time. Overall it is a better game than FalloutNV but the biggest problem is in weapon and armor creation. Under level 13 is when you need a good weapon the most yet it is impossible to get, find or create one. This is a major flaw in this game. I own and have played Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas with enjoyment. My frustration levels with Fallout 4 however have risen to the point that sometimes I just save and quit because it is so damn frustrating. Maybe a 'fix' will come? I hope so.

@numbnumb: Never had this issue, in my opinion crafting is pointless. If you are playing on Survival (which is still to easy) enemies drop great loot making it unnecessary to craft (not to mention the limitless stimpaks which make upgrading armor unnecessary). Maybe they could have done like Borderlands and made level requirements for weapons. Not sure what this games solutions need to be but I have never been so addicted to a game that I had so many issues with so I guess they are doing something right.
