The next RPG from the developers of Fallout: New Vegas, which was confirmed last week but not detailed, won't have any microtransactions, apparently. In a statement posted on the developer's forums, Obsidian put it pretty simply: "The answer is simply: 'no.' No microtransactions, of any kind, in our game."
Obsidian's new RPG was confirmed as part of the announcement of GTA and Red Dead company Take-Two's new indie publishing label, Private Division. The game will be published by Private Division, but that's basically all we know about it, and that's not going to change anytime soon.
"We're extremely excited about our upcoming RPG, and we know you are too," Obsidian said (via IGN). "We wish we could tell you all about it right now… but we're going to hold off until the time is right."
Given that Take-Two has said it wants to have some form of "recurrent consumer spending" in all of its games, some wondered what this could mean for Obsidian's next game. Obsidian said in its statement that Take-Two has been a "fantastic partner" for Obsidian on the project, never pushing them to add something that doesn't align with their vision.
"Far from 'pushing' us to put anything--microtransactions or otherwise--into our game, Private Division has been incredibly supportive of our vision, our creative freedom, and the process by which we work to make RPGs," Obsidian said. "They have been fantastic partners, and we are extremely excited to work with them through release, to put what we know is going to be an amazing game into as many hands as possible."
We will report back with more details on Obsidian's next game as they become available. The studio's next announced game is Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, which is out now on PC. You can read our review here.
Private Division is Take-Two's new indie publishing label. In addition to Obsidian's next RPG, the company is publishing Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Desilets' Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, along with an unannounced RPG from former DICE developers David Goldfarb and Ben Cousins at their new studio The Outsiders. Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto's unannounced sci-fi FPS at his studio V1 Interactive will also be published by Private Division.
