Fallout 76's First-Month Sales: Here's How The Game Did

Fallout 76 ranked fourth in November, and that only counts physical sales.

While Bethesda hasn't made any announcements about how well the controversial multiplayer-focused Fallout 76 did commercially, a report from the NPD Group contains some clues.

The NPD Group's report for US game sales in November show that Fallout 76 was the fourth best-selling game of November, only behind Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2. While the NPD Group's reports now contain digital sales numbers, this only applies to some publishers. Bethesda doesn't share digital game sales, so Fallout 76 ranking fourth with only physical sales accounted for is a more impressive achievement.

Now Playing: Fallout 76 Review

Fallout 76's physical sales in the US in November amounted to the third highest launch-month sales in the history of the Fallout series, only behind Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Critics generally did not enjoy Fallout 76, and GameSpot's review scored it a 4/10. While Bethesda hasn't announced any specific sales numbers for Fallout 76, the company said last month that "millions" of people have played the game.

Fallout 76 will be supported with new updates for a long time to come, according to Bethesda. Marketing boss Pete Hines says he believes the game's servers will stay online until the sun burns out and humankind is left in ashes.

While Fallout 76 might have had a good start sales-wise in November, it did not crack the top 10 list for best-selling games of 2018 so far. Grand Theft Auto V, a game originally released in 2013, has sold better than Fallout 76 this year.

Some of the other game sales highlights for November in the US include:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 sales after just two months exceed the lifetime sales of Red Dead Redemption 1 by almost 40 percent.
  • Black Ops 4 continues to be the best-selling game of 2018. It is also the second fastest-selling game on PS4 and Xbox One ever, only behind Call of Duty: WWII.
  • Launch-month sales for Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee were the second-highest in Pokemon history, only behind 2000 Pokemon Stadium.
  • Spyro Reignited Trilogy's launch-month dollar sales were more than 30 percent higher than the launch-month sales of all other Spyro games ever combined, except Skylanders.
  • Hitman 2 didn't make it into the Top 20 list of best-sellers.
  • Total software sales for the US in November amounted to $1 billion, which is down 15 percent compared to last year. NPD said Black Ops 4's shift from November to October this year is to blame for the downturn.

On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch was the top platform during November based on dollar sales, while the PS4 continues to be the leader year-to-date in terms of hardware dollar sales. Another notable takeaway is that, for the first time ever, three console systems sold more than 1 million units each in a November month; the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One each sold more than 1.3 million units during the month. In November 2010, the DS, Wii, and Xbox 360 each sold more than 1 million units, but the DS is apparently not counted as a console platform.

Total hardware sales in the US for November 2018 came to $1.18 billion, which is up 3 percent. Looking at games, hardware, and accessories combined, total US spending on games in November reached $2.7 billion.

Guessing most of their sales are pre-orders and they essentially have no refund policy once the game is downloaded. Now that the game is discounted, they may see some more sales following launch. Personally, I don't hate the game. It isn't what most of us wanted but it can be fun nonetheless. My issue is the state it was in at launch which was really unacceptable. I have sworn off pre-ordering anything from Bethesda going forward but I wonder how many with take that path.

Rage 2 is next up for them and while it looks fun, I'll be reading the reviews and buying it at a discount if I decide to play.

Are they just reaping the brand loyalty to the Fallout IP, because I find it hard to believe it's due to it being their best Fallout outing.

No one wanted this game and it's close to RDR2 sales tier? Another surprisingly loyal fanbase buying spree, like when NV was very buggy and still did very well before the patches arrived.

Or it was the classical peer pressure of MP?

Fallout 4 was, as far as I played, one of bethesda's most broken releases, but it was a success regardless. So when people gave them a pass, I knew that the next bethesda game would be even worse. And what do you know! Of course I called fallout 4 out and warned people to stay away from it repeatedly, but of course I was a hater that was jumping on the hate bandwagon and lets not forget that I just didn't want others to enjoy what I don't enjoy. Now I drink your tears. To the people that still like to think that everyone is wrong about fallout76, be thankful the game tanked. You might not get an SDK and be expected to develop the next game yourselves at release.

@PETERAKO: You make a good point. Much of Fallout 4 was modded and "patched" by the community. Fallout 76 won't have any real MOD support for a long time or ever unless you count the promised private servers.

The initial sales figures aren't the big story, nor are they surprising.

The REAL questiom is, "how many players are STILL plating it?"

After about 10 hours, you've seen + crafted all there is to see + craft, in terms of gameplay, and it's obvious that it will be just an exploration / stats ladder with the same stuff in new locations until endgame. Another 5-10hrs, and it all starts to wear VERY thin...

Sales massively down from Fallout 4. Sad that so many were fooled into preordering this. I hope those people learned something.

@tiringpillow: I didn't know "dead" franchises still sold millions of copies of games every year.

Regardless of your opinion on CoD, it's still a very popular franchise.

Hitman 2 not making the top 20 list isn't surprising. They barely marketed the game. Didn't even know it was coming out until the day it was released.

The thing is we know a LOT of those sales would have been lost to Steam refunds and such if Bethesda hadn't been so scummy about distributing the game. So, yes, they made a lot of money in the short term, but this should impact them severely in the long term.

@Barighm: it said in the article that digital sales were NOT counted... so none of them could have possibly been refunded by steam... realistically it's just a count of the sales on xbox one and ps4.

i said i wasn't interested in the game when i saw the E3 reveal... most of the complaints i have seen should have known just from the reveal that they wouldn't like it, so not sure why they bought it.

@Barighm: The digital numbers really aren't adequately reflected in there. But you're right: A disproportionate number of digital orders would have been canceled, since there's no map/helmet/figurines to make digital sales "stick."

They should sell Fallout and Elder Scrolls to Zenimax. After 400 hours of ESO I never ran into a single bug or glitch.

Whereas for Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4, I never got to finish due to game breaking bugs in the main quest line.

@neurogia: ESO's gameplay loop is way more satisfying than F76's. Heck, I still play ESO every Winter when the 2XP festivals start (just this week, actually).

ESO has a HUGE SP campaign, a horde of NPCs to interact with, a crazy amount of faction / guild questlines, 3 major expansion quest lines, dozens of endgame dungeons, and an amazing massive persistent PVP territory battle map that has raged for 4 years now. ...all for $30 (well, except thise 3 expansions).

...and this is coming from someone who enjoyed the first 10h of F76.

@neurogia: Technically Zenimax owns Fallout and Elder Scrolls anyway. I fully expect Zenimax Online to move onto another Bethesda ip to make an online version some time down the line.

@atopp399: Exactly. The story isn't day1 sales. The story is month 2 sales and player counts.
