Bethesda announced during its E3 2019 press conference that it would be making Fallout 76 free for this week, through June 17. The studio hopes to win over some people who never tried the game or those who have lapsed before the game issued its series of quality-of-life updates. The game is also offering a special E3 bundle for those who do adopt the game, or just any players who want a good deal.

The E3 Bonus Atom Bundle costs $10 and grants you 1500 Atoms, along with an Elder's Battlecoat and 6 repair kits. This bundle will be available through July 8, giving you plenty of time after the free trial ends.

100 Atoms is usually roughly equivalent to $1. A 500 Atom bundle costs $5, for example. Some bundles have thrown in extra Atoms, but it's usually a low number. The usual $10 bundle only gives 100 bonus Atoms rather than 500, and doesn't include a cosmetic or any repair kits. So on the whole this is a much better deal than usually available, which is why it's only available to purchase once.

The timing of the free trial came alongside the launch of a new Battle Royale mode, called Nuclear Winter. At its press conference the studio also announced the Wastelanders update coming this fall. It will add human NPCs, dialogue trees, and more story elements. The company was open about the struggles Fallout 76 faced at launch, but recommitted to long-term support and updates going forward.

I really liked the game at the start, played for 100 hours or so, done all the story quests and explored the map, it was a good experience. All the moans at the beginning was because there was no NPCS, but I said all they had to do was give it a few months then start introducing new NPCS from the other vaults as we was the first to open. If they told people at the beginning that this was going to happen the game would have done so much better. But overall the game is definitely worth a playthrough. Not bothered by any PVP stuff tho unless they do some group Riads into some dangerous vaults.

Microtransaction sales? It would be laughable if it wasn't so pathetic and desperate.

I liked the massive backpeddling and damage control of their E3 conference. Like they had planned using NPCs all along. Bullshit. They got so much shit for that, they had to do something.

However, I am not buying their lies. It's not that I think NPCs will be a lie, I just expect it to implemented in such a quick, shoehorned way that the average player will complete that questline in less than 1 day. After that, it's back to the boring old wasteland scouring terminals and robots for something to do.

I promise nobody will get a 20 hour single-player-driven narrative-focused "campaign" out of this. It's gonna be around 5 hours and after you're finished you'll probably get angrier that after tasting better, regular fallout gameplay that there's no more content. Ugh.

Really wish these fools would just put like 10 employees to simply maintain the game and have their studios work on Starfield, Fallout 5, ES6, and a NEW ENGINE.

They want the consumer to not only create their content for them but to purchase what should have come with the product.

I can see them pitching the project to investors as an effective means to minimise costs by following the Minecraft model, supporting their argument with the existence of modders who have crafted hours of quality content for free, content that, to Bethesda's regret, could not be monetised.

Fallout 76 is an attempt to utilize free labour by integrating public works into a creatively bankrupt space, thereby having the game update itself and pay for itself via microtransactions. It is because this strategy has failed that standard RPG elements (npcs, dialogue trees, etc) are being introduced to capitalise on nostalgia for a proper Fallout experience.

The purpose of Fallout 76 is to give as little as possible and to take as much as possible. A familiar tune.

@mistervulpes: Of course, now it's possible for your financial information to be sent to random strangers, so it's not fine.

Give another free week after the 'Wastelanders' update and I'll take a look. But I'm not giving any money towards the atoms.
