Fallout 76 On Nintendo Switch "Wasn't Doable," But Bethesda Still Loves The System

Bethesda considers Switch for every new release.

Bethesda has been one of the highest-profile major publishers throwing its weight behind the Nintendo Switch, but this won't extend to Fallout 76. During a panel at PAX Aus today, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines stated that Fallout 76 on Nintendo's console "wasn't doable."

That being said, Hines said every Bethesda studio considers the Nintendo Switch for its new products, but whether or not it works out depends on a number of factors. Hines said Bethesda management allows the individual teams to decide what's best for their games. Management at Bethesda never gives studios mandates, and this includes the platforms it chooses to support.

Now Playing: Our Mixed Feelings From The Fallout 76 Beta

"The Switch is something I can say with certainty that it's a part of every conversation with every dev we have now about what we're doing going forward because we consider it to be a viable platform," he said. "If the game will work on it, we want it to be on every platform possible. Fallout 76 is not because it just wasn't doable. But honestly, there is no game in development that we haven't had a conversation about [bringing it to Switch]. 'Does this work on the Switch, do you have a plan for the Switch?' It's not a mandate. Everything we do has to be developer-led, but it's something we want to make sure is on folks' radar.

"I enjoy us being seen as the third-party leader in terms of supporting Switch," he added. "People go, 'Hey, you've got a lot more stuff [on Switch] than this publisher or that publisher.' That's what I want Bethesda to be known as. We're guys who will take some risks."

The confirmation of Fallout 76 not coming to Switch not long after ZeniMax Online Studios boss Matt Firor confirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online won't be released on Switch.

Hines also made it clear that another one of Bethesda's pursuits is to make money. Bethesda is launching games on Switch because it believes it'll end up being a smart commercial decision. "You go where the money is because that's how you stay in business," he said. "What we have seen compels us to say, '[Switch] is a viable platform for the kind of things we do going forward.'"

During the panel, Hines teased that "the next Wolfenstein" game is also coming to Switch. That's intriguing because the new standalone game Wolfenstein: Youngblood is only confirmed for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. There is also a third major Wolfenstein coming, but no platforms have been announced yet. It appears Hines was referring to one or both of these games.

Bethesda already released Skyrim, Doom, and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus on Nintendo Switch, and Hines said Bethesda's games on Switch are doing well commercially. The upcoming Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Legends are also headed to Switch.

Also during the presentation, Hines talked about the closed system walls between major consoles needing to come down to benefit the entire industry.

Of course it won't be on the Switch. Nintendo systems are built for cartoony and last gen games, it simply doesn't have the power.

@shulet: Funny, that's what I think about the xbox and ps consoles compared to my "grown up" console called a "Computer".

@shulet: Not even the Pro or xbox one x can barely run the game. Dang man, at least a portable can even run this 8th gen games. The vita could only run ps3 games at 450p at around 20fps. Man could the ps3 run: fortnite, doom, wolfinstine 2, outlast 1 and 2, Dark souls with a way better framerate and resolution, Skrim Remastered, doom eternal next year... Want me to say 80+ more aaa 8th gen game?

I don't particularly think that porting a game to another system is much of a risk. Make a Switch-exclusive game and then maybe I'll change my mind. I hate to praise Ubisoft but look at Mario + Rabbids. That's a risk.

@jinzo9988:

I agree, but "Mario + Rabbids" does not seem like much of a "risk" either in my opinion, since it has Mario in it, and Mario games usually do very well with sales.

Where is Fallout 4: G.O.T.Y. Edition for the Switch?

BUT HOW SWAY?!!!... If you could play any game on any platform, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo would lose so much money. I think he's just trying to sound nice for the gamers coz the business side of gaming doesn't agree with his statement.

Makes Sense to me. Fallout 76 and elder scrolls online are very big games. I'm more than 110% sure that one of the reasons is due to how much power the switch has. If fallout 76 is dropping to 20 fps below even on Xbox one x what chance did the switch have? (Yes it's beta but still)

I've said it before and I'll day it again, I think switch is a decent hybrid console but I think that Nintendo should have put more Power in it. They knew how powerful the regular Xbox one and ps4 is so they should of made the switch on par with them or slightly stronger.

@jako998: Well the ps4's hardware was in 2012 and switch was 2015 so not much of a leap to make a reasonable price tablet that can overclock to ps4's specs

Sounds like absolute bull to me. You don't wanna make games for the Switch? Fine. That's your affair.

But you don't starve one out of three kids and claim to love them all equally.

It's just like Square-Enix withholding Dragon Quest games from American Nintendo systems claiming that DQ isn't popular enough in the west yet continuing to release them all on American PS4. Pure hypocritical bull.

@professor_megaman: Nintendo regularly makes consoles that are around a generation behind in processing power, including the Switch. It should be of no surprise to you that it regularly gets left out when it comes to high-end games. If you want to be able to play high-end games then get a console that's capable of running them.

@professor_megaman: When you're making big, AAA games, and one of the three consoles just isn't nearly as powerful as the other two, then yeah, you do kinda "starve that kid."

After the Wii, the Wii U, and now the Switch, you wouldn't think people'd still be making up conspiracies to explain why multiplatform games usually skip Nintendo's systems.

@professor_megaman: bethesda is one of the only 3rd party AAA publishers who is supporting the switch, so no idea wtf you are talking about. skyrim, doom and two wolfenstein games isn't enough for you? if anything, you should be at their mercy and begging them for forgiveness with regards to your unfounded comments lol what an ungrateful nintendrone you are.

@kokakee: Surface pro cost 900, that's not the same price as switch, the regular Surface can't play those games only Surface pro, so switch still the best option

The game is barely doable on other platforms. Glitch and bugs to fps drop.

@sakaixx: It's still in "B.E.T.A.". These types of issues are common in BETA games and are worked out by launch or shortly after.
