Now Playing: Fallout 76 Xbox One, PS4, And PC Beta Start Dates Announced - GS News Update

We've just gotten a flood of new information on the upcoming Fallout 76, and you can read all about it in our hands-on impressions. If you're eager to try it for yourself, the Fallout 76 beta kicks off quite soon. As we previously heard, it'll come to Xbox One before other platforms; it begins for Xbox One on October 23 and on October 30 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

In an FAQ for the beta, Bethesda stressed that its purpose is to "stress test and break the game," which means that servers will be "online during targeted timeframes so we can get as many people as possible playing at the same time." Although specific times have not yet been confirmed, the company said the play sessions could last anywhere between four and eight hours. Overall, the beta will go on until a few days before launch.

Bethesda also said that players should expect things to go awry, as beta versions of games tend to do. "The [beta] is a work-in-progress version of the game," it explained. "During the [beta], you will likely see a glorious array of issues; many we know about, and many we don’t. Our goal, with your help, is to identify and fix any issues that arise in preparation for the November 14 launch. We need all your suggestions and feedback during [beta], at launch, and beyond to make Fallout 76 the best experience possible, now and for years to come."

To play the beta on PS4 and Xbox One you'll need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership. Since Fallout 76 is an online title, the final game will also require these subscriptions. The only way to get access to the beta is to pre-order the game at participating retailers or directly from Bethesda.

The beta will weigh in at 45 GB and is not available to pre-load. PC players will not need to re-download the game when it is officially released, but those on console will need to download a launch version. Currently, Bethesda is planning for progress from the beta to carry over to the full game."

Fallout 76 launches in full on November 14 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. On PC, the game will only be available through Bethesda's own launcher, not Steam. On September 26 Sony announced cross-play functionality is being introduce for certain third-party titles, including Fortnite. However, Fallout 76 is not included among these titles yet.

Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines said on Twitter: "I work with a lot of devs and games for whom this is important going forward. Fallout 76 does not support cross-play, for a number of reasons. I have no idea if it ever will. But I assure you it is not on our radar right now as we focus on [beta] and launch."

Bethesda has also released the opening video from Fallout 76, which you can watch here or above.

Off topic i know but i only recently started Fallout 4. Does anyone else share my obsession with Cait? (you meet her in a UFC style fighting pit and she becomes your ally). Tough as nails. Hard drinker, and hot as hell. I travel everywhere with her now.

One time i emerged from a lengthy swim to my objective, and when i reached the other shore she was nowhere to be seen. i genuinely panicked. Luckily a checkpoint reload and she was there again!

The problem with this game, like many modern games, is the dev's dont take into account people like me. I spend all day around people when im at work, when i get home i turn on my Xbox to escape society, for a bit of time away from people. The last thing i want to do is endure more of you pesky humans during my (brief) down time. Im only interested in Single player games.

Can anyone else relate? or am i just an anti-social, miserable git?

@Foxhound1982: I totally relate, and this franchise was one of my favorite escapes because of all the hours you can put in exploring.

@Foxhound1982: You can solo this game. Just pretend anyone you encounter is an AI-driven NPC trained with an MP-sourced dataset.

@Pyrosa: and hope you get a client-side option to mute other people's mic and hide the text chat and disable all direct messages....

or have fun when they open their microphones and start blasting the song "i came in like a wrecking ball"

or they flood the text channel with toxic nonsense, or try-hard nerdlordism, or they find it fit to hold a pro-trump rally

etc

@wowgrandpa: Yep!!!! All of this.

I cannot play Fallout due to a condition i have. I call it "chronic looting syndrome". Can anyone else relate? When playing Fallout something in my head makes me "A" button spam EVERY container and EVERY corpe for loot, ammo etc.

I spend my entire time looting, then i get frustrated, and give up. :( I havent even finished Fallout 3 because of it. It's similar to "itchy nose syndrome" which i also get during the last lap of a racing game.

@Foxhound1982: I’m doing that in Witcher 3 and spend a lot of time just playing Gwent

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@Foxhound1982: I understand the compulsion. Fallout 4 utterly solved this by giving you a PURPOSE for all that loot: it's all scrap-able in each of your settlements' workshops. You use it to build better and better settlements, weapons, armor, etc., and you even gain EXP every time you build something from your loot/junk/scraps. There are multiple tiers of relevant looting and crafting skills.

Buy Fallout 4 on sale. You'll have your first workbench / settlement within ~30min, and a 2nd one about 200 yards/meters South of that.

...and when you get bored there and want to get into killing/questing, you can bee-line directly to quest locations, and then fast-travel back repeatedly with your character, your helper, and the deep pockets you crafted, all full of more loot.

@Pyrosa: I have Fallout 4 and have been playing it on and off for a few months. It is a great game. Just wish i could stop my looting obsession. I just have to search every container in every room i find.

That's OCD for ya, its kinds like the absolute need to reload my weapon every 10 seconds, even if ive only fired a single round!

Avatar image for wowgrandpa

@Pyrosa: not a solution. they just decided that good game stuff, like story, dialogue, choices was unimportant.. they replaced all that with.... a junk processing simulator.

So why do I get german commercials when I look at Gamespot videos? I'm in the Netherlands (and not near the german border). No one speaks german in the netherlands. If you can't afford dutch commercials, at least show english commercials. I know it's all difficult to figure out how complex europe is with all it's countries, but you are just wasting money now.

@lordomnius: IP to geolocation mappings. They're notoriously inaccurate, and require a ton of copperation and manual intervention from ISPs.

@untouchables111oh stop it! i have consoles and a "fairly" modern PC. I enjoy them all,

If you side with one console over the others, or stick to PC games avoiding consoles entirely, then you are robbing yourself of great games:

Enjoy as many different games on as many different platforms as you possibly can!

Except those awful games my kids play on their tablets of course. they suck!!!

Xbox gets the beta one week before the other platforms why exactly?

Online
Avatar image for wowgrandpa

@Litchie: MS likes to pay companies off in attempt to make the xbox seem like an important device...

for those types of people, that this works on.. if you can't wait 1 week... you have no self-control and this sort of weakness is why gambling and loot boxes has taken over this industry.

@Litchie: Microsoft has marketing rights.

@newbpwnr: Wrong. Microsoft has marketing rights to the franchise.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@berrlett: It is online only, but there IS a campaign and there are side quests. Not really deep, expansive ones like the SP games, but they are in there. More will be added over time.

Avatar image for wowgrandpa

@Pyrosa: Bethesda doesn't make deep, expansive quests..

they make repeatable "radiant" quests.

go here, kill stuff here, return.

we'll have another quest for you just like that one when you return.

@Tamz Why is nobody talking about the section of the Fallout 76 faq which confirms there will be micro transactions?

Link: https://fallout.bethesda.net/faq It's the 15th question down and references a currency called Atoms which can be purchased with real money:

"While you play Fallout 76, you’ll earn a currency called Atoms by completing various gameplay challenges and achievements. This currency can be used to acquire in-game cosmetic customization items for your character, earnable entirely by playing the game.

Once Fallout 76 officially launches on November 14, Atoms can also be purchased separately for real money if you so choose."

Could you reach out to Bethesda for comment on this or cover it an article? I feel like this a pretty sneaky way to confirm micro transactions without publicly saying anything to the Fallout audience.

@gamingdevil800: I don't think anyone really cares as long as it is for cosmetic purposes only.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@scatterbrain007: Cosmetic in a Fallout game though that generally equals better armour and better stats. So I don't know how cosmetic only works for this...

Avatar image for untouchables111

@gamingdevil800: cosmetic = visual only

Avatar image for scatterbrain007
scatterbrain007

@gamingdevil800: Nah, not necessarily, remember the paint jobs for the power armor? It wasn't PURELY cosmetic, each one had some sort of stat boost, but they may just be selling paint jobs with no stats.

Avatar image for hordicus

@gamingdevil800: same for me, wait and see, been playing fallout since the first one just came out beated the first

two and the tactics many times, played the 3 and the fourth and even did'nt beated any of them nor got any dlc for and

had great fun.

i find the debate a bit "passionate" around cosmeticss transaction as if it were the brand new trend.

i seriousely doubt bethesda would take the pay to win way after the EA star warslootboxes affair.

always online, what game is'nt?

the beta will come in a month and we'll see, if it cool and fun i'll get it the cheapest possible and enjoy one more time

wandering the scorched earth ^^.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800
gamingdevil800

@hordicus: I've sort of been wondering too if they'll actually add proper NPC's, quests etc in DLC? Like I'm sure a lot of people would prefer it over just exploring, getting loot and killing other players.

Avatar image for hordicus

@gamingdevil800: the world of fallout is a dangerous one, with an agressive wildlife, natural disasters, elite beast

farming for superior craft and why not looking for nuke codes.

i never nor plan to ever spend a cent in microtransaction. nobody whine about them in rockstar games.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800
gamingdevil800

@hordicus: Everyone whines about them in Rockstars games due to GTA5 not getting story DLC haha

Avatar image for mdinger

@gamingdevil800: Purely cosmetic and (presumably) not loot-box based. I guess that's technically better than Overwatch at least. Still while it's more the Fortnight micro-transaction model, Fortnite is free to play so imo Bethesda (like EA/2K Games/Activison etc) is still taking the piss with putting in this BS given that this is a full-priced game.

Avatar image for wallacom

@gamingdevil800: "To acquire in-game cosmetic customization items for your character". As long as it does not affect gameplay, I have no issues.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

But still the fact none of the games websites I frequent are mentioning it is suspicious. Especially after them jumping on the DMC5 micro transaction news.

We should all know by now that the initial release of the game is also going to be a broken mess. I'll probably let them fix and update the game for about a year before I consider giving it a try. Or maybe just whenever private servers become a thing.
