Now Playing: Survival Mode Is How Fallout 4 Should Be Played

Fallout 4

The new 1.5 update for Fallout 4 is now live on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Bethesda has announced.

Most notable among the changes is the addition of Survival mode. This is the game's hardcore mode which places a premium on resource management. Items can be harder to find, you deal and take more damage, fast travel is disabled, quicksaving and most autosaves are gone, and so on. You can get a more in-depth explanation of what to expect in our previous coverage.

1.5 also adds support for the upcoming Far Harbor expansion (launching on May 19) and fixes various bugs. A full rundown is available below.

You can grab the update now on PS4 and Xbox One. Additionally, if you've registered interest in beta testing the Far Harbor DLC on any platform, you should check your email to see if you received an invite.

The console versions of Fallout 4 are set to add mod support soon. Bethesda recently announced plans to bring it to Xbox One sometime in May, followed by PS4 in June.

Fallout 4 1.5 Patch Notes:

New Features

  • New Survival difficulty
  • Survival adds additional challenges including no fast travel, saving only when you sleep, increased lethality, diseases, fatigue, danger, and more. See the in-game Help menu for more details.
  • Characters set to Survival difficulty appear under their own Character Selection filter
  • Third-person camera movement improvements when player is close up against walls and other objects

  • General stability and performance improvements
  • Fixed rare crash related to reloading a save that relies on Automatron
  • Fixed issue with the robot workbench camera not moving properly immediately after canceling out of the menu
  • Fixed issue with perks being repeatedly added when reloading a saved game while in robot workbench

  • Robots can now be assigned as settlement vendors
  • Fixed issue with "Appropriation" where blueprints would not appear properly if the container had already been looted prior to getting the quest
  • In "The Nuclear Option," entering the Institute using the targeting helmet on Power Armor no longer inadvertently causes the player to go into combat, and become stuck in the Institute
  • Fixed distance check with Robotics Expert perk
  • While in Workshop mode, if the Jump button is remapped, the Y or Triangle button can still be used to jump
  • Fixed issue with "Defend the Castle" where speaking to Ronnie Shaw would not properly complete the quest
  • During "The Nuclear Option," fast traveling away from the Institute immediately after inserting the relay targeting sequence holotape will no longer block progression
  • Fixed issue where Workshop placed light bulbs would occasionally not light properly
  • Fixed occasional flashing issue with entering and exiting Power Armor

This just SUCKS, I loaded up my usual game on survival and my carry wait went from something around 280/500 (approx; and I'm guessing) to about 1400/500 due to bullet weight in the new mode etc. so I was forced to go down to Very Hard difficulty level. The worst thing was that when I did that it informed me I could never, ever go back to survival mode. thanks Bethesda after I've been played the 'old survival' mode since I started playing, solid. They should have kept the old survival mode and also the NEW survival mode, then I would have had a choice. now not to mention the reduced chances I have of encountering Legendary monsters due to being forced down a difficulty level. Poor do Bethesda, poor do.

@dfernand: had my stash (ammo, gear ect) all in sanctuary..., last save before the update, I was like half way across the map.., had a carry weight of 1790/100 all the way back to sanctuary when that the happened -.-'... ,took me 30 min to get back to my stash holder and drop every thing off xD..

instead of carrying one weapon of each ammo type and tons of ammo.., now I'm only carrying only 2 weapons (sniper & stealth handgun) + ca. 100-150 ammo each.., and let my companion carry a shotgun (and maybe another strong weapon) + much ammo, which I can switch around with...

when looting now, I only pick up ammo and "money" (or food/drink... or real precious stuff.., I dump on my companion),... besides having to adapt the too lower (imo too low) carrying weight, the gameplay and survival feeling are cool to experience (scavenging is different, when finding water or food. or a bed, your feel much more rewarded... and the tension when roaming at night is much higher etc. etc..)

but wouldn't play this mode on the 1st play-through, it really is a bit too hard.. (unlike in Fallout New Vegas, where it was cool,, imo epic., demanding but not too hard)

Avatar image for jessejarvis

Yeah.. It look enough ammo on the default mode to take down the SUper Mutants. I'm not playing on a mode that limits my ammo to 2 bullets (exaggeration). That's just enough ammo for my companion and I to end it :P

Does sound like a fun mode but I hate games that add the need to eat/drink. I need to do that IRL thank you very much, I don't want to do it in a game as well.

I still think the game at it's core is not built to support these kind of severe limitations.

imo the survival mode is a bit too hard.. was better in FNV: the hunger, thirst, tired etc..occur imo bit too often (and in FNV it was displayed bettter)...; and the max carrying weight was lowerd a bit too much..

otherwise its a cool function too experience: going on foot everywhere (exploring even more) and scavenging even for beds in empty houses, much higher tension in fights and playing even more stlealthy and defensive, ...but probably not good for the first playthru (unlike with FNV, where it was very doable and fun on the 1s run,.. when playing on the highest settingn and with the survival mode in Fallout New Vegas)

and not sure, can't teleport, when a town is being attacked either?? (havent tried to teleport then)..or does it work expectationally then? otherwise can never make it in time to any attack -.-' (EDIT: seems its not possible, when reading the other pots..)

I don't think it was mentioned above, but with the update your status effects are now showed on screen without the need to open the Pipboy to see them. I believe its called the UI, but don't quote me on that.

Wait, what is the thumbnail? It looks like a monster from Silent Hill. @_@

Vehicles or mounts would be super cool. Vanity pets that follow you around would be also.

I don't know how can anyone play this game on consoles

Avatar image for dfernand

@silversix_the thing about playing on consoles is that it removes the ability to cheat via the command console which is VERY tempting.:

Avatar image for silversix_

@dfernand: or do a thing called not using command console. Yeah, i know, incredible idea, isn't it? Do you spend $60 to be invulnerable and get everything you want in the first 10 minutes of playing? I don't. Command console is something i didn't touch for anything other than editing my character appearance (something you cannot do at all on consoles) and i played the game for ~310h...

If you're weak to the point of HAVING TO USE the command console just cuz its available, that's your problem. I don't spend money to unlock everything... everything on a platter removes the whole point of exploration and leveling up.

Avatar image for turretx7

@silversix_: Why? Do you have deformered hands or something?

@silversix_: because everyone is different

I don't get it , what happens with the survival mode that was in the vanilla game, the one that i am playing, i have no use for this crap. This works for dayz because it's multiplayer.

This should more appropriately be called Reality Mode, since it does not really make the game any more difficult and does not make it harder to "survive." When people were talking about wanting a harder survival mode my understanding was that it could be as simple as making enemies 5X harder to kill and making it 5X easier for them to kill you. They do more damage, we do less. Instead they do more damage. . . we do more damage. . . and I can still take out a Deathclaw from 200 yards in one shot.

In many ways these changes are great. It slows the game WAY down since you cannot fast travel anymore, and it makes you really consider what you are taking with you. In my second playthrough I carried 5 weapons and a good selection of explosives, as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition for everything from 10mm that I never used to mini nukes and missiles. As a result I went from carrying 220 lbs to having over 6000 lbs, and my carry weight went from over 300 to 225 with 10 strength and maxed out Strong Back. This is no joke. Carrying 100 rounds for each weapon, 10 stimpacks, and a few other meds, food, and water, with all of my gear having an "ultralight build", I still end up at about 200 out of my 225 max carry weight, though 40 of that is taken up by my 10 fusion cores. After putting on the power armor my carry weight jumps to 345, which leaves just enough room to pick up legendary gear and junk here and there that contains oil.

Going through buildings, or anywhere for that matter, I would pick up anything I could, and I would pick every enemy clean of their weapons and armor so I could dispose of it for raw materials later. Now I only take legendary gear, ammo that fits my 3 weapons instead of 5, and meds. My companion now only carries extra ammo, food, and water. Clearing Corvega for a test drive I had to use 10 purified water to stay hydrated and went through plenty of actual food that I had not carried since the start of the game since stimpacks and meds were just easier.

This made me have to pay more attention to what was going on, but it did not make the game any harder. I still cleared the inside and outside of the building without having to put more than one or two bullets into any single enemy. When I took damage it was still minimal and I never went below 80% health, which was cured by using a total of 2 of my 10 stimpacks instead of 2 of my previous 300 stimpacks.

The real "difficulty" was in having to make the trek there and then to another nearby settlement, monitoring my carry weight, and making sure that when Piper fell off a building I located her and gave her a stimpack so that she would not return to Diamond City with all my extra ammo and food.

Reality mode?

If it was "realistic" enemies would go down easier... and you would have an emotional stress meter lol...

Survival mode is an appropriate name... "SURVIVAL" doesn't mean harder.

Will it improve the MAJOR glitches on Xbox One, hence why I never bought it.? Framerates, clipping etc, that I've observed.

Avatar image for foozlefop

Strong back and lone wanderer perks. Problem solved. I am going to go high strength, endurance, and agility, with enough points in Charisma to get lone wanderer unlocked. A brute, idiot savant, cannibal who loves radiation, feasting on flesh and joins the liberal equivalent of the modern left via signing up with the Railroad (Liberals would love to replace humans. It would spell world peace if we could just get rid of humanity. Really, right?). I mean only a liberal could support the Railroad, duh! No guns and just raw stupidity is my path to what I hope is going to be a very enjoyable third play through of Fallout 4!

Avatar image for nikolistary

How about an update where players have choices that matter? Or maybe added factions? There's only 3 in Fallout 4, New Vegas had over 10.

Avatar image for Marky360

I want mods more then this new more difficult mode. I play Fallout on easy so I have no use for this.
