[UPDATE] Bethesda Studios has tweeted that the Survival mode should start next week. The original story follows:

Bethesda announced in a tweet that Fallout 4's overhauled Survival mode will enter Steam beta "soon."

Survival mode was explained last month and will change the post-apocalyptic game by disabling features like manual and quicksaves and the fast travel system. It'll also makes it so combat is more lethal, and you'll have better sleep in nicer beds as opposed to sleeping bags. You can read more in our article here, though Bethesda has noted the mode's exact content is subject to change.

The exact release date has not been announced, but we'll keep you updated as more information becomes available. Bethesda says the mode will come to consoles when it's ready for an official release.

In other Fallout 4-related news, the game's first expansion, Automatron, released today. The DLC revolves around the Mechanist, a character who has released an army of hostile robots on the Commonwealth.

And if you're interested in playing as a dog, a new mod lets you play as the trusty companion, Dogmeat.

I finally beat it last weekend and worked on some trophies this week and finally got the one where you have to stand around in a settlement for 4 hours yesterday (what a chore), and with it Platinum. Cool game, but i think i am done with it too. 1 playthrough took me like 3 months.

Interesting choices, might use, might not but "More lethal"? really? victims get more dead?

"More deadly" is the phrase. Piper and I are the scourge of the Commonwealth already,

so bring it on.

@simmo303: Uh no, the former is perfectly correct. Unless you're ESL or young as hell, surely you should have heard "more lethal" by now.

@Raidendude153: Of course I've heard "more lethal", that is irrelevant. Lethal is absolute like dead, unique and fatal.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a50575ec5600

@simmo303: It's not irrelevant, it is the proper use. Are you this daft on semantics as a whole- or just about how words can have multiple meanings? Lethal can also mean harmful or destructive, kid.

@Raidendude153: You are displaying ignorance. See Chambers. If you have a lethal injection, you will die - not might die. True some words can have multiple meanings, lethal is not one of them.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a50575ec5600

@simmo303:I mean, you tried. In this age of information your ignorance is purely a choice. Good thing for you that it's so blissful, eh?

le·thalˈlēTHəl/adjective

1. sufficient to cause death."a lethal cocktail of alcohol and pills"

2. harmful or destructive."the Krakatoa eruption was the most lethal on record"

@simmo303: It's literally the definition, you can polish a piece of shit, but you're still going to be holding onto a piece of shit- just like you grasping to this false notion.

You'd get better headway trying to **** a wall than to redefine a word, champ.

If it's like NV then I'm in, the only modern Fallout game that I liked, I tried 2 hours of 4 and I was done. Bethesda don't make good games, they're like Bioware where they make highly overrated games with the worst stories. Obsidian made NV and it's so much better, they made KOTOR 2 and it was much better that KOTOR.... apart from the ending, but to be fair they had less than a year to make it.

So just get Obsidian to make The Elder Scrolls 6 please Bethesda, they made Pillars of Eternity and that's a better Dragon Age game that 2 and Inquisition, like they scratched that itch but Bioware failed yet again.

@Slannmage: Obsidian make Elder Scrolls 6? No thanks. Bethesda haven't made a bad Elder Scrolls game yet. Fallout 4 was underwhelming, so what? Fallout 3 was still excellent and we wouldn't have gotten New Vegas without it. I think if Obsidian were to make an Elder Scrolls game, it wouldn't be the same, that's Todd Howard's baby and every one he's worked on has been a masterpiece.

Obsidian are great at writing quests but that's about it. I don't think they'd provide the same level of detail which Bethesda is known for when it comes to art direction and variety in gameplay, which is essential to Elder Scrolls.

@Slannmage: Don't expect better writing from Bethesda any time soon, certainly not in these DLC. It just isn't their strong point and I doubt that will change until they either hire someone like Chris Avellone or get Obsidian in to do some DLC. I'd love it if they got Obsidian in to do a "Fallout 4.5" similar to what they did with New Vegas, but given that Obsidian just announced Tyranny I'm not overly hopeful.

That said, while survival mode won't change Fallout 4's inherent shortcomings it will add a great deal of immersion and the type of difficulty I really enjoy. Not the standard "enemies have more HP" kind, but difficulty that actually makes you think more and become more involved. It's enough to make me want to give it another shot, even with the vapid characters and writing.

Wait a minute, I'm on survival mode right now and I'm happy just the way it is.. .does this they will be two survival modes now i.e. one classic and the other new and difficult with the need to sleep and to eat food etc ? or are they completely eliminating the old survival mode ?

Avatar image for deactivated-5a50575ec5600

@dfernand: calling the current hard mode "survival" is a painfully wrong misnomer. Couldn't be easier, even on "survival." They shouldn't have released it with such a barebones far cry from what it should have been at launch.

The survival mode really sounds like it needs to be a set of options that you turn on/off on top of the difficulty setting.

@Mogan: Again, this is on your end.

People bitching about the legitimate features they are adding in the survival mode is a proponent of why the game is so dumbed down to begin with- to sell more copies to the simpletons like you that loved Skyrim's bastardization of RPG elements. : /

I thought this was out already. Sux that it isn't even out on pc yet. Kinda good that revisions can be made. My advice, make the various hard bits togglible. Some of those survival mode options sound fun, others make me never want to play fallout again.

It's all good except for disabling quicksaves and....manual saves? Really? Bugs happen, the game crashes now and again. You shouldn't be punished for technical problems.

Avatar image for Salt_AU

@reduc_ab_: I played it for 120 hours and it crashed once, I reloaded the save and lost about 8 minutes. Stop making excuses so that you can save every 15 seconds.

Avatar image for Mogan

@Salt_AU: I played about 150 hours and had to reload because of bugs maybe half a dozen times, and I lost 20 or 30 minutes on a few of them. Made me start quick saving pretty frequently. Also, once mods really start coming in, I imagine we'll see more crashes as modders work out kinks and we figure out what plays well with what.

If Bethesda's Survival Mode is an all or nothing proposition, I imagine I'll just wait for a mod that only adds the features I'm interested in, and lets me keep the quick save.

@SprSynJn: Please, then, explain his point. The game crashes once in a while; it has other bugs as well that you'd probably rather not save over. I manual about once every, oh, 20-30 minutes. Not too ridiculous.

Sheesh. Badass? Dude, I was having some fun. Calm down.

Avatar image for Salt_AU

@reduc_ab_: LOL 700 hours, when you have a life, responsibilities and employment you'll understand kid. One crash in 120 hours of gameplay. Try again with excuses for wanting an easy mode quicksave champion.

By the way, I never even said the game crashes a lot. It's crashed maybe 10-15 times in all of my glorious 700+ hours. But if you feel the need to label me further, or just to belittle me a bit more to make yourself feel better, by all means, continue.

@reduc_ab_: I'll reword your badass comment if you like.

You played for 700 hours. Clap.....clap.

I've logged in over 120 hours. In other words, you ain't at my level, son.

Seriously though, I'm tired of people wanting instant saves in every game on the planet and coming up with lame excuses such as 'the game will crash' and 'I don't have the time' and 'I should be able to play how I want', etc. The mode was designed by Bethesda for a reason, they're the game developers, they understand exactly what a quick save any where does to gameplay challenge, it completely and utterly counters every single mistake the player makes with literally zero penalty. Why didn't Dark Souls incorporate an instant save whenever and wherever you like into the game? Why do thousands of games have a restricted save 'checkpoint'? An instant quick save has no place in a survival mode that is designed to challenge the player. The options are already in the game to save at every step, play those difficulties.

Avatar image for SprSynJn

@InYourMouf: Why do people keep acting like fast traveling is essential in this game? I have played countless hours and have used the feature twice I believe. I see no reason why people couldn't go without it.

Avatar image for Mogan
Mogan

@SprSynJn: I like walking around the map and exploring, but I also like to be able to zip back to my settlements to pick up or drop off stuff. There's a ton of back tracking in Bethesda games, especially in Fallout 4 if you're going back to build up settlements as you gather more resources, or running across the map to defend them as they get attacked.

If survival mode wanted to limit fast travel to something like just to settlements where you'd built a specific upgrade, I might be cool with that, but no fast travel at all, and no other option to speed travel time, isn't something I want to deal with when I'm retreading the same ground over and over because I've hit my carry limit again and have to go back and dump loot. That brings the game to a dead stop.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a50575ec5600

@SprSynJn: Simple kids think their methods are the only way. They might realize a SURVIVAL game is more fun with actual survival elements.

Avatar image for InYourMouf
InYourMouf

@SprSynJn: And I see no reason why anyone would want to play without it. It's bad enough being bothered constantly to offload all my junk at a settlement, it would be absolute torture to have to walk all the way back each and every time. Even a punishing game like Bloodborne has a travel system, because walking for an hour to get where you've already been is widely considered to be not fun.

@InYourMouf: There are the vertibird flares, but I'm not sure they are available to all factions later in the game.
