Fallout 4 Studio Cannot Make Any More Pip-Boy Collector's Editions

"We made a s**tload of Pip-Boys."

If you weren't able to pick up a Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition while they were available, it looks like you were out of luck. Bethesda's Marketing VP Pete Hines told GameSpot at Quakecon that the studio hit the factory limit on making the editions, and it cannot make any more.

When asked about why the collector's edition sold out so fast and why Bethesda hasn't restocked it in several weeks, Hines told us that it wasn't so much a case of making the edition rare--the factories simply did not have capacity to make more of them. He explained, "We reached a point where we'd go back to the factories and they were like, 'guys, this is it, sorry. This is as long as we can run the lines and as many of them as we can make.'

He continued: "They're being made today, it's not like they're done and sitting in a warehouse. [The factories would tell us,] this is what the yields say. I mean, we don't make [the Pip-Boy Editions], and we'd go back to [the factories] and say, 'Demand for this is insane, we've got to make more.' And they'd move other projects off or shift stuff to other factories and it just came to [them telling Bethesda], 'Final answer: sorry, this is as many as we can make.' And we sold every single one of those that we could."

Hines also told us that Bethesda had ordered a lot of Pip-Boy Editions--so many, in fact, that it eclipsed all other Bethesda limited editions released in the past. "We made a s**tload of Pip-Boys, and we went back and made more, and went back and made more. I keep seeing stuff about, 'Oh, you only did a few thousand." No--we did a ton of these things. I think we did more of these things than we did for any collector's edition we've ever done, ever."

The Fallout 4: Pip-Boy Edition includes a replica Pip-Boy device that's able to hold your phone. It also includes other physical items such as a special case and a poster. It costs $120, but it's sold out everywhere.

Fallout 4 launches on November 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. At Quakecon, we also asked Hines about the development of Fallout 4, and he told us that the studio had decided that the game would be set in Boston before Skyrim launched.

Personally I think the timing caused the biggest uproar which has led so many people too complain about the pipboy edition if they had released the pipboy edition closer to the games actual release date people might have complained less I mean I don't follow video game as closely as everyone else does it was some time in August I had first seen the fallout 4 trailer and by that time the pipboy edition had already been sold out I'm sure it was probably a lesser evil type scenario where the pro's out weighed the cons and they probably already knew some people would get a little butt hurt about it they always do but the reality is Bethesda isn't a toy company its not like they aim to piss as many people off as they can you just simply can't please everyone personally I'd start at the last and work my way back its almost like time travel :D

Right because lots of companies turn down money.....mmhmmmm....

And big studio's like Bethesda that want something to get done are told "No, sorry" and are fine with it.. . mhmm...

Something else is going on here... Bethesda must not be making much on these, plus the free Fallout Shelter, plus the free Pip-Boy app.... They probably are just thinking, "haven't we done enough?"

@gamertaboo: You're right, they don't turn down money. But you have to understand that the other companies that pay for production runs are paying money too. It's not like the factories are owned soley by Bethesda - they contract with them to make products. The contract is done up, the timeline scheduled and fit into the factory's schedue and when the line is run, they are filled to capacity and 1 day can mean the difference in breaking a contract with anothe company. It's not as easy as you make it seem.

This is a limited edition, stop crying they're not making anymore. For once a game holds true to it's "limited edition" status.

We all know it's going to be a lightweight, cheaply abs plastic constructed pipboy with a cheap lcd with limited functionality, but for collector's this should retain it's value or go up.if it stays sealed.

Again, stop crying about availability because that's the point of something like this...

@InTheZoneAC: I hear ya. I NEVER buy the Limited Edition of any game...ever...at all. I'm actually such a cheap ass that I wait until a Game of the Year edition comes out and I get the base game and all the extra DLC and junk for like 15 bucks. I have no problem waiting for anything. Especially with video games as support (and Bethesda does some crappy support) is limited and I don't want to spend 60 to 80 bucks just for the plastic wrapping denoting new status only to find some crippling bug exists and ruins my time. And you're probably right, this is most likely going to be cheap, brittle plastic that gets used for the first day of playing the game then shelved because it's uncomfortable and cumbersome. There's a reason why the Pip-Boy only exists in a fictional game universe and not the real world where the iWatch is a tangible and functional item. I honestly am not that kind of gamer where status bothers me. I don't care about all this extra shit (my husband got the God of War collectors edition with the stupid Pandora's Box which is now shoved in a closet somewhere because it's completely fucking useless and adds no value to the actual interactive product), achievements, online multiplayer...just give me a great experience without all the clutter that adds zero real-world value to my games.

collectable piece of junk, aside from the novelty it's useless, so it's useless. Save your money and just buy the normal version of their dumb game.

They can't make anymore?! Really? Why? What a BS answer. It's like gojng to McDonald's and ordering fries and they say "I'm sorry, we're out, we didn't anticipate demand and the factory said they can't make anymore. Sorry."

Do they really think people are this stupid? You're telling us in all the world you can't find anyone to make anymore?

Bethesda, you're full of s**t.

I can't believe how overly inflated the price is for this and people flock to it like flies on crap. Charging 60 bucks for a piece of plastic is insane. I bet it only cost them like 5 bucks to make each one. They're making a killing off of these...

I don't see the big deal about Pip-Boys being out of stock. I'm going to just attach my iPad to a piece of fabric and put it on my wrist. Download the app and you've got yourself a nice little Pip-Boy model 0. XD

Am I the only one who would rather just play the game and use the in-game pip-boy. Like without a large, bulky piece of plastic on my forearm with my phone in it, draining my phone's battery, wouldn't it be easier, more convenient, and more comfortable to just play the game without the physical pipboy?

@Ayzed: Raise the bid, raise the price, plan forehand. A situation like this is stupidity. Kinda like how Nintendo releases a new Majora's-themed 3DS only to have it out of supply in a day and the price in the secondary market reaching the skies.

Reading the comments there is a couple things I think need to be pointed out.

1. This is not just a collectors item - it is an accessory that enhances the gaming experience. This should be something the company should provide to everyone, so that everyone can equally enjoy the game. Not that only some can if they had the money at the right time and were "lucky enough" to get one.

2. There is no way it is impossible for them to make more. There is no way the factory is the only one in the world that can manufacture them. They're hunks of plastic and dye. The technology and equipment used to make them should be able to be outfitted in another factory. Unless the technology and parts to make the hunks of plastic are lost to mankind once the factory stops making them.

It's not that they can't make anymore, its that they won't. For whatever reason. Releasing them after the game comes out is possible, and they should do that.

@zach9617: In response to your #1, you can still use your smartphone without the big stupid plastic cover. So everyone does get to use one. Unless you believe Bethesda should provide everyone with a brand new smartphone as well just because they include some game functionality.

in response to your #2, I'm just going to assume you're still one of the younger crowd and have no idea how actual business deals and contracts function in the real world. otherwise you would realize how vague and ignorant your statements are.

@boogityboy: I'm old enough and have spent a career making contracts in vacuum formed plastics in SanAntonio and you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Bethesda has complete authority over the pipboy productions and can license the manufacturing to anyone they want. Virtually every game company has the same legal patents setup for accessories in game bundles. That's why so many other studios have called bs on this with Bethesda.

@boogityboy: 1. As I stated, it enhances the gaming experience. Why make the pipboy useable at all if that wasn't the point of it?

2. Do you know the specifics of this business contract? If not, you're just making an assumption (in ignorance of the facts). If they can only make that specific edition with that specific companycompany, they could make more after the game release (as I stated previously). Or they could make knock-off pipboys with some variance. As some people have started 3D-printing and selling replicas with no patent or copyright issues.

Again I don't know the specifics of the business contract. If you know them, please provide a link to your source.

@zach9617:

1) It's called marketing. Again proving you know nothing about business or how it actually works. And again if you actually knew what you were talking about, the pipboy function is STILL USEABLE on your smartphone without the big stupid piece of plastic that covers it.
I can guarantee you that pretty much 95% of the people will ditch this thing within the first 2 hours of gameplay and just use their phones anyways if they are going to use the feature.

2) You mean I'm making wild assumptions?... just like you are (also without any source of proof either oddly enough)

3) this is a collector's edition. You know what usually makes something a "collectable?" usually the fact that there's a LIMITED AMOUNT of them.

4) You know there's a massive history of legal battles between Bethesda and the original owners of the IP, Interplay? Maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe this has something to do with an agreement between the rights holders and/or legal issues and that's why they are only allowed to make so many. Again, you have no idea and are speculating yourself. To say "they can make them, they just won't" is probably the most ignorant unfounded statement you could make at this point.

5) You just sound like a butthurt child who didn't get the toy they wanted for xmas at this point, so we're done with this conversation. At least I am until you can contribute something that actually has some legitimate context, which I doubt.

Good day sir.

@boogityboy: Bethesda is a company. Period. Companies don't give a shit about nostalga or collector's editions unless they calculate there's a profit to be made. They screwed up. They didn't anticipate the demand. Now they're backed into a corner. They don't want to have anymore made for fear of alienating the collector industry but as a result they're watching a huge potential profit leaking away daily. I am a businessman specifically in contracting vacuum formed plastics in Texas and I DO know what I'm talking about boy.

@corwinsr: Unless you work specifically for Bethesda in this situation, no, you really don't. ;) Kinda like how you originally claimed "Bethesda has complete authority over the pipboy productions and can license the manufacturing to anyone they want.", which again, you don't know that for sure.
I also like how you basically negate your own arguments.

"Bethesda is a company. Period. Companies don't give a shit about nostalgia or collector's editions unless they calculate there's a profit to be made"

Then go on to say:

"They don't want to have anymore made for fear of alienating the collector industry"

If they only gave a shit about profits, they wouldn't give a crap about "alienating the collector industry."

And I like how you threw in the "boy" at the end there as if it's some type of insult. Maybe if I was black and this was the 60's I'd be offended by that. All it actually does it make me picture you as a big Foghorn Leghorn stuttering "I say I say I say" over and over again. (If you're really "old enough" you'll know who that is)

Good say, sir.

@boogityboy: oh please. Stop pretending to be upstanding and proper. The "boy" comment was added because you have a habit in most of your posts of accusing people that disagree with you of either being too young or ignorant or both. You just don't like it when that comes back on you.

The seeming conflict you cite in my comment was me trying to underline Bethesda's dilemma. Yes, they are a business and I stand by what I said about profit being their motive. That desire for profit is in conflict now because while it may seem the direct route to profit would be making more of these items they could very well hurt future profits by alienating collectors and damaging their reputation.

And I do get the Foghorn Leghorn reference. It actually gave me a laugh. Makes me like you a little more honestly.

No boogityboy, I don't work specifically for Bethesda but I'll put my experience and knowledge of this industry up against the other "experts" here right now and unlike most weasels that make such claims I'll happily put my actual, real world credentials right here in public (short of my real name - I'm not stupid).

@boogityboy: 1. So you're claiming that the entire point of the pip-boy being usable, along with the free app they created specifically for the pip-boy, was all just to make money? Fair enough, although you have no proof of that. i believe they made it usable to enhance the gaming experience, which would obviously help sell them (i never said it wasn't good marketing, but to assume they ONLY made it usable to make money is a bit ridiculous).

2. You claim you have superior knowledge of not just the gaming industry, but this SPECIFIC contract. Without any proof to back your claims i have no reason to believe you are any more informed on the situation than i am. You're making claims, not providing much reasoning for them either. Also talk about a wild claim - "I can guarantee you that pretty much 95% of the people will ditch this thing within the first 2 hours of gameplay and just use their phones anyways if they are going to use the feature." - do you believe you can see the future? How can you guarantee that?

Using the app without the pip-boy seems like it would be an unnecessary chore - put down your controller, pick up your phone, turn on your phone, start the app, put down your phone, pick up your controller - when you could do all of that from the game. While having the pip-boy would just be more convenient (by being attached to your arm) and add to immersion.

3. Again, its clearly not JUST a collectable. It's an accessory to the gaming experience, regardless of whether or not their intention was simply to make money off the product. That is what the product does.

4. Sounds like you are speculating as well. I heard bethesda bought the rights to fallout years ago, including all the rights to the property. Meaning they could do what they wanted with it. Anyway, i went on to say they could make more after the game released. How could making more be a problem with interplay? They kept going back to the MANUFACTURER to ask if they could make more. Saying they "can't" is like saying "it's impossible". Clearly it's not when third-parties can 3D-print their own and sell them with no problem. It's not physically impossible, Why couldn't they make more with another manufacturer? Perhaps another version? Buy out of their contract? So many ways they could make more, all they tell us is "we can't". Saying they "just can't" is so vague it makes me think they really can make more. I don't think my statement is anymore ignorant or unfounded as your claims, since your claims are based on no evidence.

5. Haha, i already pre-ordered my pip-boy. I was only here to discuss the current situation, and bethesda's statements on the matter. You just sound like an ass of a child, who wants to make some stranger on the internet feel bad. That's pathetic. Anyway, enough with that unnecessary shit. Unless you can provide a legitimate source to back up your claims, and prove to me you really can see into the future, then there is really no point to continue this conversation.

@zach9617: The Third-Party company is probably one of those idiotas that done sell "confidential designs" (even though its Bethesda's merchandise) so Bethesda would probably be limited to that one company in the trade agreement between them.

It would be theoretically possible for new ones to be made, but they'd likely appear different and probably not work the same way. (Intellectual Property and all that common hokum). They will probably make more, but not in the recent future.

@jamezaye: That's basically it. The thing that makes no sense is that in the contracts I make with companies, if I'm unable to either meet demand or meet increased orders, they have it written in that other contractors may be used for additional orders. It's why I never have exclusive contracts or hold rights to designs in any way. My production methods are mine but not the designs. I do plastic forming that does include other materials including electronics so I can speak pretty confidently about this I believe.

@Redmess: It was, but exclusively to certain stores. The issue is that these companies refused to follow Bethesda's policy of 1/person and many just hoarded them up to later sell on Ebay or Amazon (technically illegal but of course the suits don't care).

It sold out in Australia within 16 hours. EB restocked and it mostly went to those that put their name on a list (one including myself). They DID manage to make more, I suppose there's always going to be a point where they say "No more."

First of all, I am happy for those of you who have been able to pre-order the Pip Boy Edition. Coming to the point though, I honestly do NOT care about the Pip Boy Edition. Like Todd Howard put it eloquently, it only a 'f**king gimmick' albeit an innovative one. The Pip Boy app is still usable if you have a smart phone so it doesn't matter if I am missing the outside case. What's important is the game itself and I already have the PC and X1 versions pre ordered. I will also be getting the Prima official guide. I am locked and loaded. Well, there will always be some left over Pip Boy Editions at my local Bestbuy a month or two after the game's release. I will acquire one at that time.
