Fallout 4 in development, set in Boston - Report

Casting documents reveal details about long-awaited role-playing game.

The Fallout faithful were dealt a blow recently after Bethesda confirmed the Fallout 4 website was indeed a hoax, but now new evidence suggests the game is real and set in Boston. Casting documents obtained by Kotaku for a project code-named Institue include scripts and character descriptions believed to be associated with Fallout 4.

One line of text from a script starts off with the familiar line "War. War never changes," which started off Fallout 1-3 featuring the voicework of actor Ron Perlman. However, this time around, it appears the character will deliver the line.

Other documents speak about a mission set in the Institute--described as a post-apocalyptic version of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. The Commonwealth, which was referenced in Fallout 3 as being what remained of Massachusetts, is also mentioned in the documents.

A report from August 2012 claimed Bethesda had conducted a scouting trip to Boston and the immediate surrounding areas, launching speculation that the unannounced game would be set there.

Characters referenced in the document include a radio DJ named Travis Miles and an engineer called Sturges, described as a "cross between Buddy Holly and Vin Diesel." The documents also include casting calls for both male and female versions of Fallout 4's main character, and explain that the player will begin the game in a cryogenic sleep chamber.

As Kotaku points out, it is possible that some or all of these details were invented for the purposes of the casting call; and if they weren't, they could still change through the development process. It is also unknown if the project will called Fallout 4 or if players will get to travel outside of Boston.

A Bethesda representative declined to comment to Kotaku and to GameSpot.

The most recent Fallout title was 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and set in a postapocalyptic Las Vegas.

Its predecessor, Fallout 3, was developed by Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) and took place in Washington DC and the surrounding area. Bethesda Game Studios, which also developed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, moved onto a new project in April 2013.

Bethesda also recently trademarked Starfield and Soulburst, as well as Void Engine, none of which have been officially announced to date.

Bring Back a Turn-Based element to V.A.T.S. Please!

FO3 was fantastic and I spent a massive amount of time playing it but I won't play another one if it's the same gameplay set in a different location. I really liked New Vegas too but I simply cant play it anymore and never finished it (maybe about a third of it.) I am simply burned out on this game no matter how good the story is. The mechanics need to be new and I would love to see a turn-based-squad-style combat system make a comeback.

Remember your roots. Seek the wisdom of those from the Black Isle.

Even if we had an option to switch between turn-based and shooter styles I would be happy, PC nirds would be happy, and the console kids would be happy too.

If BGS is the developer for Fallout 4 I will pre-order, however, if its Obsidian or any other developer its a wait and see. Bethesda nailed FO3 and Skyrim 2 games I still play all these years later and worth every penny.

I have very high hopes for F4 but they need to get the hell on it. They already crushed me by cancelling FO: Online.

The one cultural reference that would REALLY make this game worthwhile is hearing your character whisper "And shepherds we shall be" before executing a guy with a silenced pistol.

Fallout 4 defiantly needs a new engine. Fallout 3 and NV looked dated, even from day one. Gameplay was good though and I really enjoyed both (sunk a lot of hours into them) so looking forward to see what Fallout 4 brings.

The mushroom cloud in the illustration kind of looks like a giant, dirty chef's hat.

I wish they would get a bit more exotic with the Fallout locations. Fallout Boston feels like it might be a bit to similar to Fallout 3 in terms of the scenery. How about Fallout Australia? Australia is already filled with tons of dangerous wildlife, think of the horrors that would await you!

I remember the voice actor that did Three Dog tweeted he was going back into the studio. I wonder if he will voice the new Dj (Travis Miles) or if he will just be some other voice in game.

Which has been my only reason for them NOT making one. V.A.T.S. is too sweet a mechanic to lose, and it really only feels unique to Fallout.

I played Vegas, and I gotta say- it wasn't all it's cracked up to be. It was fun, yeah, but for me, and a bunch of other people, Fallout 3 was the real heavy hitter. But even that's not really a lot of people's cup of tea. I'm looking forward to any kind of Fallout- be it another cannon installment or another one-off like Vegas.

<< LINK REMOVED >> agreed. One has to be a real imbecile to believe that this article about another article written 2 years ago confirms the existence of FO4. Bethesda probably paid a little cheque to generate some buzz around themselves.

I really hope that the story is good. FO3's was good, I just think that writers need to involve the main character more. I'm tired of playing as a silent protagonist. Voice acting helps develop the character, and helps the player bond and connect with him/her.

Also, in case anyone hasn't heard, FO1, 2, and Tactics are free on gog.com until Saturday :)

I totally agree with you. I'm just worried that there will only be one set voice for Male/Female characters, instead of options like in Saint's Row. I play a black chick- her voice needs to match her a little bit, you know? Either way, definitely excited for this- FO3 is my all time favorite game (even over Super Mario Bros. 3- and that was a classic).

Worst part of it being on consoles was the DC area being cut up into little chunks. But Console Gamers think they have an edge over the industry, for some reason...

I have to wonder if they'll favour Creation Kit over id Tech 5 for this sort of game, cuz let's be honest: The combat in FO3 was the weakest part of the game. At the same time, exploration might be stunted unless id software can find a solution to bring the open world to their engine.

I agree with you. However, if losing the Creation Kit means it will be harder to Mod, then I'm against them changing the engine. Since it will be on consoles as well, I'm already imagining a lot of core content will get cut. At least with PC and Creation Kit, some of it (as well as many other wonderful community made mods) will get it closer to the original concept than anything the consoles might be able to offer.

I hope this is true. It'd be nice to see a game set my town, especially Fallout. There's a lot of american history here and I hope draw from it. I also hope they expand on the Cyborg story from FO3.

Honestly, after the debacle on r/Fallout during the whole Survivor2299 episode, until I get 100% confirmation, I believe nothing.

I'm just as excited as the next person, but more hoaxes or false reports will just leave me frustrated.
