Now Playing: GS News Update: Fallout 3 Had Two Versions That Never Released

Fallout 3 launched in 2008 as a 3D open-world game, and it has since spawned two similar sprawling RPGs in Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. These have proved incredibly popular, but the series could have been very different if two canceled Fallout 3 projects had seen the light of day.

Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment, told IGN that the company worked on multiple Fallout 3 projects in its previous guise as Black Isle Studios. Urquhart recalls one project that went on to become Icewind Dale.

"Now 3D was the cool stuff. So we were going to move from being a 2D engine and be a 3D engine, and so we actually started working with this 3D technology called NDL," he said.

"What happened was, we were moving forward but we were really learning, and it was where Interplay [publisher of Fallout at the time] started to run into financial trouble--and that was where Icewind Dale came from."

"The Fallout 3 team became the Icewind Dale team," Urquhart said. He went on to say the company wanted to make Icewind Dale as a dungeon-crawling "counterpoint" to Baldur's Gate's more story-driven elements.

This wasn't the only Fallout 3 project, however. The CEO said another version, codenamed Van Buren, "was the second Fallout 3," after the first one became Icewind Dale. Van Buren has been more widely reported, and you can see more of it on YouTube.

Eventually, Black Isle studios--which developed both the original Fallout and Fallout 2--was shut down by Interplay, and Bethesda took over the Fallout franchise. Many of Black Isle's staff went on to work for Obsidian, which has since developed Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout 1 and 2 had good story line but never liked the game play so never went back to them. Fallout 3 blew them all away with first person and 3rd person available for player to choose. FO3 was the best. it also had game pad support which was a major plus. the mods added even more fun and adventure to the game. the DLC's were great. Now if they only remaster it and upgrade it to 64 bit version, would be worth going back to it many times over. FO4 is nice with its snap and build but the story line is a little shallow.

I'm pretty sure New Vegas was the best as far as the 3D games are concerned. Also you can't say FO3 blew the first two games away, that is a dumb thing to say, they may be old and 2D but that doesn't mean they are bad and they were much more complex and engrossing for what they were. Fallout 4 was a huge step backwards from all the games including the first two, it was not the way a Fallout game should be and would've done better under a different name.

they should make a 2d looking isometric fallout sequel someday. im a huge jagged alliance fan and that series is totally dead but fallout is popular and i think a more to the roots release of the original game would be something that old school players would like.

Wasteland 2 is the closest thing recently i seen to a fallout 2 sequel but it'd be nice to have an official fallout release that was more like the first two games. I just like the isometric tactical view cause its what i grew up with, its burned into my head.

@Yams1980: Obsidian are still doing that kind of style with Pillars but apparently there's some bad blood between them & Bethesda so I don't know if they'll get a chance at the Fallout franchise again.

Fallout 3 and 4 are both underwhelming when compared to the first two in the series, especially when you strip away all the mods. The only one that came close, and this is distantly, was New Vegas.

Duh. This is old, old, OLD news. Like ten years or more old.

Avatar image for bbq_R0ADK1LL

@Wraith3: Yeah, there has been tonnes of info on Van Buren for ages.

Good thing they went with what we have now

Fallout 3 was originally Baulder's Gate with a Fallout reskin, and then Fallout 3 became an Elder Scrolls game with a Fallout reskin.

Thanks for the autoplay ads that blasted full audio to my headphones gamespot.

Avatar image for Yams1980

@katerinafm: i love the autoplay video ads. i like how it wastes my limited bandwidth and lags my internet. these are good times for us.

Avatar image for B0rn2Gam3

@katerinafm: I've lost track of how many times their autoplay ads have scared the crap out of me because I wasn't expecting it.

The least they could do is have them autoplay with the sound off.

While it's neat that they are talking about it, it's also kind of old news. Van Buren has been known about for a lot of years as one of the cancelled versions of Fallout 3.

Man, let Obsidian have another crack at Fallout. Or Star Wars; I'm not picky. Obsidian is great at making better sequels to other people's games.

But I guess it's probably all hands on deck for Pillars two.

Avatar image for k00lenkrazey

@Mogan: Uhhh, KOTOR 2 was better than the 1st?

Avatar image for Mogan

@k00lenkrazey: Yeah.

"Many of Black Isle's staff went on to work for Obsidian, which has since developed Fallout: New Vegas."

Which explains why New Vegas was superior to Fallout 3.

Avatar image for normanislost

@likesenpai: well yeah it was superior but it also came out after FO3, they looked at that game and added to it

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@likesenpai: The best 3D Fallout game by far. At this point they're probably also the only ones that could save the series. But Bethesda has different plans.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a50575ec5600

@Atzenkiller: different plan$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@Raidendude153: More like "Let's strip the Fallout games of everything they ever stood for and turn them into a mix of generic fps, garbage collection sim and Minecraft."

Avatar image for brokedownsystem

fallout 4 has been the biggest disappointment to me. I loved Fallout 3.

Avatar image for hystavito

@Atzenkiller: Always gotta widen the appeal and grow the audience, whatever the sales are, they're never enough.

Avatar image for md3blue

@Atzenkiller: is there anyone who is happy about anygame that didnt come out 10 years ago? The game was amazing plan an smiple you are whats wrong with this website nothing but negative bull shit

Avatar image for k00lenkrazey

@md3blue: Are you talking about Fallout 4? If so, then that game was NOT amazing. At least thats the general consensus. It stripped away everything that the series had stood for up to that point and morphed it into a basic shooter with basic looting in a somewhat interesting world.

Avatar image for JustinGoSka

@md3blue: Fallout 3 was a good game on its own, but if you played the first two games, Fallout 3 was probably missing alot that you were expecting.

Avatar image for normanislost

@md3blue: to many Hipsters

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@md3blue: What game are you talking about? F4? Or is this just some random "I disagree with your opinion just because and I wanted to let you know." comment?
