Factor 5 feeling Brash in 2010

Lair developer partners with Hollywood import specialists for unnamed film tie-in due on unannounced platforms in two years.

Aside from a few select exceptions, gaming tie-ins to major Hollywood releases are often seen as merely studio cash-in products marked by substandard quality. One of the most common reasons diagnosing this phenomenon is that these tie-ins are often on extremely tight development cycles and creatively hamstrung by the precepts of the film they are based on.

Brash Entertainment, cofounded in 2007 by Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull with the express intention of acting as liaison between Hollywood and the gaming industry, seems to have taken at least some of this criticism to heart. Yesterday, the publisher announced it was partnering with Resident Evil and Folklore creator Yoshiko Okamoto's Game Republic on a film tie-in due out in 2010. Today, the publisher announced it had entered into a development deal with Lair developer Factor 5 on a film-to-game adaptation with an equally long development cycle.

While Factor 5's PlayStation 3-exclusive Lair was nothing less than critically maligned, the studio found success partnering with LucasArts on the best-selling Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Indiana Jones franchises. The California-based studio also partnered with Nintendo and Sony for creating various toolsets for the Wii, GameCube, and PlayStation 3.

Factor 5's as-yet-untitled project is slated for release in 2010. Brash expects to release more details concerning the project during this year's E3 Media and Business Summit in July.

Lair is supposed to be a good game once you learn the controls. They should release a patch giving regular non motion based controls as an option. I'd probably go back and give Lair a try

Whatever, Factor 5 are a good developer. There main strength is obviously pushing the juice out of a system, but they have made some great gameplay too. They're supposed to be working with Nintendo on a Kid Icarus game. It uses an engine capable of doing everything that the Lair engine could do (although less of it) and Nintendo are designing the gameplay, so that should be awesome. I hope it's a quasimythilogical third person shooter with flying.

They were embarrassed from Lair that they changed their brand identity.

Good for them, these guys are mega number crunchers when it comes to Hardware, the fact the Lair had issues showed that the PS3 was no cake walk to program for. I say they make a new gen Turrican on PSN/Live, that would be insane.

"Lair sucked because of Playstation 3 hardware; the sixaxis." If that was true, the gameplay would suffer on every game that used the Sixaxis, which it doesn't.

Rare... and not Factor 5... perfect example when the company leaves where they originated from. Same thing could happen when EA takes over Take Two

is F5 working on another aerial based game? If so, that will narrow the movies tie-ins possible.

Folklore - fantastic game. I hope they can redeem themselves from Lair. I really felt bad for them. They were so excited about that game...

This is good news. I would like games based on movies to be much better. And now I have to play Folklore which is just sitting on my shelf. I had no idea Okamoto also worked on Resident Evil.

The fully patched-up version of Lair isn't too shabby. It's still rather glorious to behold in 1080p. Too bad it released in such a dubious state. I have faith in Factor 5. People seem to forget some of the great titles they've released in the past.

So will this game be on the Wii or what? I can't remember whether Factor 5 went back to being a Nintendo second party or just ended its PS3 exclusivity.

Whoa, the man behind my beloved RE series did Folklore? That's great. I hope he does some movie games justice which is a good possiblity since RE is based off of Dawn Of The Dead.
