Fable III Update - Combat and Scary Ghost Things

We wind up shipwrecked on a new continent against an army of creepy spirits.

When we met with Lionhead's Peter Molyneux at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year, he had a simple question for us: Which Fable III demo would you like to see? The two options highlighted Fable's two main sides. As an action role-playing game, Fable III features traditional RPG elements like stat-building and engaging with the world around you to help shape the story, while also dropping you into situations where there's no choice but to fight your way to safety. We elected to see the role-playing elements at E3, which you can read about right here. But now that Fable III is on display here at Comic-Con 2010, we got a chance to see what that combat demo was all about.

No Caption Provided

The demo began with the main hero going on a trek through dark, dank caves alongside a bearded fellow named Walter. This friendly-looking guy is actually your mentor throughout the early stages of the game. He's the one who takes you under his wing and shows you what's going on in Albion in terms of King Logan and the disastrous effects of his tyrannical rule. Through his teachings, you begin a quest to overthrow the ruler and assume the role of king for yourself. It's probably the luxurious, flowing mustache that makes Walter so trustworthy.

On a journey to the neighboring continent known as Aurora, the pair wind up shipwrecked and somehow find their way inside this creepy cave. Aurora stands as a marked departure from the generally bright, shimmering world of Albion that we've seen in previous Fable games. Aurora seems to be a windswept desert wasteland with a brown color palette that should contrast heavily with those parts of the game set in Albion.

Inside the cave, the pair encounter a series of jet-black ghost spirits whose glowing eyes stand out eerily from the dark backgrounds. Fable III carries over the previous game's one-button combat, mapping magic, guns, and bladed/hammer weapons to a single button each. Lionhead has striven to make the combat experience flow more smoothly between these various forms of fighting, which now surfaces in the ability to quickly halt your giant hammer swing in order to whip out a gun and shoot an enemy sneaking up behind you. Overall, it seems more quick and adaptive, really taking advantage of the dedicated buttons in a way the previous game didn't.

After taking care of dozens upon dozens of these black spirits, we ran into a boss creature seemingly made of dripping black ink that took Walter hostage. This led to a boss fight that we won't spoil for you, but the result was that we freed Walter from his clutches only to find that being held captive in the ethereal darkness had robbed Walter of his vision. So we took Walter by the hand--an interaction new to Fable III--and gently guided him toward the cave exit, a poignant moment amid the otherwise creepy cave atmospherics. When you're outside, a cutscene plays where you try to convince Walter to follow you to safety while he demands you leave him behind in order to save yourself. That's where the demo ends, complete with a cutscene that lays out the option before you and asks which path you'll choose. It's a tough option: Do you leave your friend behind, or hurry back to Albion to save the citizens from Logan's tyranny?

No Caption Provided

The demo was brief, lasting no more than 15 minutes overall. In that small time, it was hard to get a good picture of how combat will shape up, but if nothing else, the demo proved that the enemy design and new settings will at least add to the tension of combat even if the game maintains its relative simplicity. Either way, we're looking forward to getting more hands-on time with Fable III as we draw closer to the game's October 26 release date.

@Norwegicus If it will be xbox only then please explain how and why gamespot have managed to get hold of a cover with "Games for Windows" written on it and why GS have put it into the pc section of their website? Also if you make a claim like that you need to explain how you know this, basically quote a source.

Can't wait to give it a whirl on my X360S. Just beat Halo: Reach and want to try a graphic intense game to see how well this "whisper quiet" version of my favorite consol handles it.

"I can tell you that, system reqs will be xbox." .......coming from a fanboy probably , nevertheless it will be released on the pc and if i remembered right the first one was released on the pc 2 (or a differnet version of the game named something else fable and something, don't remember, not the best game good but not the best), only the second was an exclusive xbox, ...never seen fanboys as bad as xbox ones, ps3 has some but xbox has to many...to remain on the right path it looks like a good game and funy 2, but not that good to buy a xbox because the second was exclusive for that platform.....and if i remember right it had some new ideeas, and stil has and i hope they will make it better than the first

This is one game worth calling out as an exclusive...Different and comprehensive in every way, without the usual RPG headache.

Those black monsters better not be the monsters on Fable 2 which were exactly like every other monster just coloured black. Eg a Balverine coloured black, or a bandit coloured black.

WOW the graphics got a major upgrade from Fable 2. In fact it looks almost as good as Halo Reach in some ways texture detail on the game world could be improved a lot before release, but other hten that the NPCs, and the player models have 10 times the detail they did before. Major kudos to the developers for that one. My biggest complaint about Fable 2 was the lack of much graphical improvement over the last one.

I hope for Peter to make game that good. Me likes game that good. As for other games of Fable, they good. I know everyone is to be agreeing with that. Final Fantasy is good. It a game that other role players wish to be playing more of................ just me, or are there a lot of language barriers going on in these forums?

A fable is a succinct story, in prose or verse, that features animals, mythical creatures, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature which are anthropomorphized (given human qualities), and that illustrates a moral lesson (a "moral"), which may at the end be expressed explicitly in a pithy maxim. So I why don't I see animals talking in fable 1,2 ?? Or 3

@hrothgar99 I agree, doesn't always have to be dark, but dark isn't just for adults a wider audience enjoys a darker feel, that's not what I mean, dark or not, there's just a very childish feel to it. Now, I know some adults who couldn't care less, they'll play about anything but others like myself, prefer something more mature, it's not right or wrong, it's just preference. Enjoy your game.

@Tidal_Abyss : I agree some parts are pretty childish in fable 2. But it had some kinda dark parts. Like at one point your guarding a cell filled with starving slaves, and you can choose to let them starv. and later in that same lvl your forced to either kill your only "friend" in that place or be tortured yourself. im no expert but thats not so childish to me :P (its a wile sinse i played tho, bit fuzzy on details) But anyways im a diehard fable fan so what do i know right? ^^ im 20 btw for what its worth.

Really cannot wait for this. Although, I'm pretty mad at P.M for not releasing Fable 2 for PC...Damn Microsoft and their surprisingly persuasive way for making you buy an Xbox 360! Twas still a pretty low blow to the PC community...

@Tidal_Abyss : first off well stated comment. I think u may have been less frustrated had u used a control pad. Im 26 and i think the story was aslo a bit childish, very fairy tale-esk. but worth finishing. i hope this game is a bit darker, and a lil less kiddy on the art design.

I never played the first one, but I purchased the 2nd one this year (bad PC port by the way), and I did 'some' research on it, clearly not enough, but had always heard good things about this game so I figured for $19.99 at my Best Buy, I'll give it a try. Perhaps for those who play on consoles, the controls are at least better, but they're horrible to say the absolute least on a PC even after customizing. The third person pov was very clumsy as well. Now I use a hyperresponsive, fully programmable gaming keyboard (Razer Lycosa) and gaming mouse (Razer DeathAdder), perhaps if some PC gamers used a gamepad that might've helped some but trust me that couldn't fix it totally (I don't use/own gamepads, find them awkward, limited, & very uncomfortable comparitively speaking, but to each their own). Anyhow, the game itself, the story- is very youthful to put delicately, I'm truthfully not here to offend, but as a gamer in my 30's I was expecting something more suited for an adult. I felt this is a game more suited for my 11 Goddaughter. I couldn't even force myself to finish it, I made it all the way to a grown character, but I was so bored and uninterested, I ended up uninstalling it. If you're in my age range you really need to question if you're in the mood for a more juevenile type of game. No offense to anyone who likes the game, by all means enjoy yourself, but I'm talking to you older gamers like myself. Take the warning. I'm steering clear of the series.

Fable will always seem great with its battle system, and it is good, to an extent. I just feel that a one button for a certain attack system can be really limited. It is a good game, but it gets limited after a while.

@razgriz1972 Agreed, I'm sure less than half the people who find the story underdeveloped could tell you about William Black. @diegobrosso They already have plans for Fables IV and V. I'm hoping we can revisit the Old Kingdom at least once.

I think this series is OK, but nothing terrific. It seems like a lot will change in this one, and the new ideas seem cool, but again nothing great. I can't help but play this series so I really hope this one is good and they end the series with a good note if this happens to be the last of it, or at least take a break from the series and comeback a few years from now. @razgriz1972 How has Final Fantasy not stopped at a correct time? Every game is generally different, unlike this series, making it impossible to even compare them to begin with. Not to mention, FF1-9 are practically all gold. I could understand if you were saying they should have stopped at ten, but thats still 9 productions. I'll be very surprised to see a Fable 9.

There is -in my mind- no reason not to buy this game. Even if they were to, god forbid, screw this game up, I would still buy it. I've played both previous games and loved them both. The quirky humor, the hilarious moments, the actual emotional connection you have with the game. I can't wait for the countless hours I'll spend playing this game.

@ razgriz1972 I hope this will be the last one but if this have a lot of public don't get surprise for more Fable's coming. It's sad that a lot of people said this game is bad when they even have played the 70 % of the game. I really liked the Fable II and I'm sure I would have enjoyed more if I could played online but still I like it and if Fable III would be that impressive as Peter promise it would be a purchase for sure =D

@rouch696 don't forget about Fable's characteristic brand of humor - can't have a fable game without a bird crapping on the main character or a gravestone that reads "Athiest - all dressed up and no place to go"

I bet most people who don't like fable 2 missed all the intricate details referring to the first and the prehistory in the first. so much detail, fable 3 is sure to be the same, but there are two questions 1. will they port fable 2 for pc 2. will this be the last fable or will this franchise go like Final fantasy and go way past the place they should have stopped

@JohnisGodd Yeah I did know that, but as you say, awkward. Stand there and charge your spell - meanwhile your enemies have free reign to pummel you - and even when the spell is fully charged it doesn't do much damage...after a while I found it easier to ignore the magic and concentrate on my sword and gun. Not as much fun but much more effective.

I liked Fable 2 a lot more than the first one and am glad to see that the free-flowing nature of the combat between magic, melee and ranged has been bettered.
