[UPDATE] It's been brought to our attention that, while you could buy all of Evolve's available DLC right now for $136+, that might not be the best idea. For example, the Bog Monster Skin Pack ($7) includes Bog skins for the Goliath, Kraken, and Wraith Monsters. You can also buy these three skins individually for $3 each, meaning that if you definitely want all three, buying the $7 Skin Pack would save you money. GameSpot regrets the error.

The original story is below.

Launch-day DLC is no new thing. Personalization packs such as character and weapon skins are par for the course with many games today. But while some games offer just a few extra options at launch, expanding later, Turtle Rock's new title Evolve gives players a veritable feast of add-on content to consume.

If you wanted to buy all of the Evolve DLC available right now it would cost you $136, on top of the $60 game or the $25 DLC pass. There are 44 pieces of Evolve add-on content listed on the game's Xbox Marketplace product page, available in the $2-$7 range.

The DLC is cosmetic in nature, however, limited to weapon and Monster skins. Some options include the Kraken Wendigo Skin ($3), the Assault Ragnarok Skin Pack ($5), and the Goliath Bog Skin ($3), among many others.

No Caption Provided

On top of the Monster and weapon skin packs, Turtle Rock offers the Evolve Hunting Season Pass ($25), which will eventually unlock four new Hunters and more. All new maps and modes, however, will be free, so as to not segregate the community.

That Evolve offers a smorgasbord of extra paid content is not all that surprising. After all, we've known for a while now that Turtle Rock had extensive DLC plans for the game, which some fans raised concerns about. Responding to these issues, key developers spoke out to make clear that Evolve's DLC scheme is not meant to "leech" money out of players.

Despite Turtle Rock attempting to lay those concerns to rest, the controversy over Evolve's DLC plans made it all the way to the top of 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive. Earlier this month, Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick defended Evolve's DLC plans, saying that in fact controversy can be a positive.

"I guess controversy, generally speaking, is a good thing," Zelnick said at the time. "People can argue about the business model [but] I think we're delivering a fantastic title that's well worth what consumers will pay for it."

Evolve's extensive DLC plans also give the game an opportunity to continue to drive revenue long after release, something Zelnick sees as being paramount to Take-Two's success. In previous earnings calls, Zelnick has talked about applying "recurrent consumer spending" strategies to most of its major franchises, Evolve being no exception. The idea of recurrent consumer spending is that major releases are complemented by an array of microtransactions that ideally yield further revenue for a game up until--and possibly beyond--the release of the next installment in the series.

In the case of Grand Theft Auto V, this is already paying off. While Take-Two has not yet announced specific numbers, Zelnick has said that GTA Online, the multiplayer mode for GTA V, has been "the gift that keeps on giving" as it relates to players continuing to spend money on the game long after its initial release. GTA Online allows players to buy in-game currency for real money, or they can always earn it through regular gameplay.

So not only does Take-Two make money from the 45 million copies of GTA V sold so far, but the company also banks incremental revenue from GTA Online. This is seen as a way to establish GTA as a "permanent" franchise, one that can be a meaningful revenue contributor even in years when no new GTA title is released. It's not hard to see Take-Two applying the same vision to Evolve and its other franchises, and the proof is in the numbers.

For Take-Two's latest quarter, revenue from digital items was big business for the company. Sales of things like virtual currency and DLC jumped 64 percent to $217 million during the period, the company reported last week. In all, recurrent consumer spending made up 36 percent of net revenue from digitally delivered content, representing a 23 percent year-over-year increase.

All of this is to say DLC is here to stay. While virtual items may be just that--virtual--the money to be made from them is definitely real.

I hate that all of these idiots think that this game is horrible because it's trying to sell you stuff to make your gear look nicer. Cosmetic gear is NOT core content, and you definitely don't need it to have fun with the game. Everyone who's not getting this game because of DLC: Do you like monsters? Do you like hunting? This is the game for you.

This is stupid the only DLC right now is the skins which is just cosmetic. The Season Pass is not needed it's for things coming out down the road. Why is this so hard to understand?

I think the term DLC is getting old. We should reinvent the term. Like, all i do when i want a game is to buy it in Steam, battle.net, Origin and download the content. In other words, i DLC. Just saying, we all D L C every day.

Examples:

CRC - Company Revenue Content

MIC - Maximum Income Content

BPC - Bigger Paycheck Content

CBC - Corporate Business Content

Or maybe:

EGC - Extra Game Content

NGC - New Game Content

ALC - After Launch Content - i like this one, its clean

After i finish the game, i will have to find out if the extra content is worth buying, for the added story or game experience. I don't care about cosmetic content, you can shove it in my face all you want. Some people want their skins, and its all good.

I really feel that "DLC" almost always has been a part of the Standard of the game and then corporate business people take over and split it up with a microtransaction plan to generate rev. In the old days, i at least felt that when an expansion or a new story was released, it was its own new game or experience.

Todays industry is much more greedy. (A voice in my head is telling me, that the companies just wanted to add $20 to the standard edition price, and call the old "standard edition" the "new starter edition", which you can pick up for only $59.99)

From what I've gathered from the interwebz it seems that there are 3 different editions for the PC.

Standard = $60 (base game)

Digital Deluxe = $80 (base game + season pass)

Monster Race = $100 (base game + season pass + 5th extra monster and 2 hunters + skins)

Season Pass =$25

What I don't understand is where the extra monster and 2 hunters are coming from in the Monster Race Edition. I feel that if I'm buying a season pass I should get all the monsters and hunters included.

I don't care about skins and if devs want to put it in there to make extra cash I don't mind. However, if I have to buy characters with different mechanics that change gameplay when I've already bought the game then thats a different story.

<< LINK REMOVED >> True. They really have done alot to milk this one. As Kevin said in the review, it's a complete experience without all the DLC, but it's an option that makes it seem like you buy just a bit of the complete experience.

In regard to the extra skins, they have done exactly what you are wondering about. They actually left out some stuff in the season pass, which i think is a clear indicator of the motive behind this approach. It's all money making with Evolve. I feel too, that if i buy a season pass i should get all the add-on content as it is released. (I don't usually buy DLC or Season Passes, but when i do, i usually regret it; Hint:Destiny)

But then again, you don't always get all DLC in a Season Pass anyway, so that might explain it.

Some of these games launching day 1 DLC you can argue that it wasn't actually withheld, it was developed after the game went gold. When you've got THIS MUCH DLC at launch, it seems pretty likely it was deliberately withheld. Especially when it's all cosmetic stuff. Wasn't going to buy the game, and would have changed my mind if I was. I won't support this sort of disgusting business model.

The obvious difference should be obvious! GTA V is a HUGE full game PLUS the separate Online game which is extremely under-priced value wise at only $60. add a few cosmetic things and sure, that's a decent value for customers.

Evolve, as it is out of the box, is barely worth $60, "leech" some of the content out like extra hunters and sell it as DLC and people have every right to be upset.

How can people defend these companies? I hear it all the time 'it's only $20 extra' or 'it isn't affecting you why do you care?'.

The fact of the matter is video gaming has become a muilti-billion dollar industry and publishers want to gain the maximum amount of content sold. They now nit-pick their product of 'unnecessary' content (or in cases like Destiny, just ripped it apart entirely) to feed their own personal greed. Developers are not the ones making much money off of their work it is purely the higher ups in the company.

Moral of the story is, we live in a capitalistic society and if laws are not made to stop these companies from taking advantage of their consumers, nothing will change. The worst part is, the people making the big bucks off these video games probably never even play the games they own because they are just businessmen looking to make a profit.

This whole evolve DLC outrage has me wondering. If the developers need to generate more revenue from games what is a better alternative? I assume that it is getting more and more expensive to develop games with our high expectations of quality across the board. Is it just a matter of enough content at release establishing value? Is DLC ok later as a way to add longevity to a game and generate revenue for the developers? Seems like this is just a failed attempted based on people being sensitive about "multiplayer only" not being worth standard $60 price and developers some how taking away from quality of the game by "wasting time" generating add on cosmetic DLC. I would just like to see games functioning on release day and less "remastering" of games we have already played on other formats. If I see DLC as a rip off I don't buy it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think it's been happening for years, and just like "regular" retail priced games, there is a range of from "great value" (GTA V + Online + DLC); "acceptable" (COD + regular map packs); to "outrageous" (Evolve + extra characters) that deserve criticism.

so, saying "all DLC is bad" isn't quite accurate. just the overpriced, unnecessary stuff.

They are probably still testing them. They weren't in the beta either as far as I know. They probably will not come out for quite some time. The season pass is not needed, nor are the skins, so it's all pointless drivel to whine about it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> yeah like payday 2 but the game cost 25€ or something at launch, with a lot of free content too (like heists) and some weapon packs and now character packs and now preo order dlc stuff. Now everyone call them greedy. Of course they need money to produce free stuff and they are quite a little studio with not a big publisher behind, but come on, don't you thing THAT many dlc day one is just ridiculous ?

Looks like a F2P with some premium packs. But wait it's not a F2P, it's an AAA game.

Does anyone remember when skins in a video game were part of reward for doing some action ? That kind of stuff were part of the game.

Like Halo 3 for exemple, level up and doing specific action in multiplayer to get them, no cosmectic dlc, and I'm sure they could just add hundred of them no problem.

You had the feeling to pay for a complete game, not something they put in then put out and saying "it's just some cosmetic dlc, no problem"

I never doubt the power of Greed. And i have seen devs and publishers lie enough to know better than to trust them until the stuff is done. It is called being a cynic through experience.

I am using logic. Again, you believe devs and publishers in video games? I mean, if you do I have some prime real estate and a bridge in Florida to sell you....

The way the player base is dropping on Steam, you better worry if there will be any community left to even care about the free stuff.

Good luck with that. And again, money talks and BS walks. Remember that.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, I have no idea what stats you are looking at.

The peak on launch day on Steam was about 27,000

The peak today way 19,000

The current amount during prime time was under 12,000

Yes, the player base is dropping off. On PC definitely.

And again, the page doesn't mean jack. You are WAY too quick to believe. Don't believe everything on the internet my friend. Plans change, publishers get greedy and money talks. That is simple. If they decided to sell map packs in the future, I will bookmark this page so I can tell you I told you so.

You are really doubting the greed of a publisher that launched a game with this much planned DLC? A company that has it whole release schedule for the PAID DLC pretty much set but have not released ANY plans about the free stuff other than saying that they will do it. No timeline, no schedule, just an empty promise that means nothing until they are released.
