Evolve Is a "Permanent" Franchise Alongside GTA, Red Dead, and BioShock

"We're really happy with where it's going. It isn't 10 million units...yet."

Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock's monster-hunting game Evolve is now considered a "permanent" franchise, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. Others that Zelnick has previously referred to as "permanent" include heavyweights like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, BioShock, Civilization, and and Borderlands.

Zelnick made his comments this week as part of the 43rd Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in New York. Though the executive appears to be pleased with Evolve's performance so far, he acknowledged that the game's multiplayer-focus might have held it back somewhat.

Zelnick also stressed that Take-Two was fully aware of the mutliplayer nature of Evolve when it paid nearly $11 million to buy the franchise from THQ.

"As you know, Evolve is very multiplayer focused, and that's worked for people--we've had something like 27 million game sessions played," Zelnick said. "And we've sold-in over 2.5 million units. We're really happy with where it's going. It isn't 10 million units...yet. But it is an important franchise for us.

"I think we come out of that experience reminding ourselves we have to have a strong single-player opportunity. But we knew that about Evolve," he added. "We think we've developed another permanent IP. But if there were something lacking, I would say it would be that it was probably a bit too multiplayer-focused, which we knew all along."

Zelnick previously referred to Evolve as a "key long-term franchise" for the company.

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that's the unique goal in the industry," he said back in 2013. "Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises. Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example."

Take-Two has not announced plans for Evolve's future, though Zelnick labeling it "permanent" would suggest that the company plans to return to it someday. Until then, players can expect even more add-on content for Evolve. Just this week, Turtle Rock released a new Arena mode for the game.

Where is this Bioshock you speak of? Permanent? Where is it....I can't wait. Give it to me now!

Avatar image for CA0001

If you want a permanent monster hunting game, there already is, Monster Hunter. Biannual releases with uncharacteristic Capcom free DLC as well as a million player busting MMO and with MH4 gaining ground in the west, it is set to be greater than it already is.

Avatar image for UrbanMessiah

So wait...they knew they needed a strong single player component and that Evolve was too multi-player centered, yet they released it as is?

Soooo that makes them kind of stupid, right?

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

This is the game that Evolve developers bragged, 'would revolutionize DLC as we know it'. Congrats Evolve, please know that only a few idiot..... people...... no wait idiots is right, would ever buy any game from Turtle Rock. Strauss Zelnick might as well find another career, because the internet doesn't forget.

BTW the only reason the game sold as many as it has - is because of one of the largest ad campaigns ever - which 2.5 million sales, I doubt, has even allowed them to break even. And also if you track the game it has nosedived in prices since launch, going down by half price within a couple of months, it lowered the price within a month hoping to make it back on the $100+ downloads the game launched with.

...and that screenshot looks like it's from a game from 2000s.

No fuсking way. They're on drugs. The concept is too niche.

Avatar image for LoganDaDestroya

Not doing very well on PC I hear, only around a 1000 peak players per day.

Avatar image for rlakhani

Has Zelnick become good friends with Kotick and Guillemot?

Avatar image for NTM23

My brother bought it, and I never played it.

Avatar image for Stogin

Well, guess it's a franchise that I'll never take part in. Have no desire to play that game, the beta was awful, hated it, and the DLC-fest that followed made sure I'd never try it again.

Avatar image for YellowJello

Completely forgot Evolve was a thing.

Avatar image for ratchet200

Are they serious? There's no way this game can even come close to games like GTA and Bioshock.

Dream on Turtle Rock.

Avatar image for muzza93

Cant believe they consider this a permanent franchise. I was struggling to find a game around release date on PS4. So a lot of the games were filled with id iot ai bots.

Plus the only balanced monster was the titan. The kraken was too easy to beat and the wraith was way too difficult to beat.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

What a joke. This DLC fest is already forgotten, and the plummeting player numbers prove it.

Avatar image for suikodudeman

@Thanatos2k: Obviously it is not forgotten. There are still plenty of folks playing it. And then there's folks like you who 'remember' to come here to talk about a 'forgotten' game.

Though plummeting numbers are true.... at first. Now they, while no where the kinds of numbers CoD enjoys, are consistent. So long as folks enjoy and play a game, it is truly never 'forgotten'... look up Phantasy Star Online to see what I mean.

Edit: Also plummeting numbers don't indicate a bad game. They can, certainly, but they aren't a catch all/end all indicator. Witcher 3 right now has a large amount of players, but it will plummet when Batman Arkham Knight comes out. The next CoD game will have huge numbers that then plummet with time and new game releases. Thing is, no game can ever maintain their initial release number of players. Some will drop off very quick (Evolve, Watch_Dogs, Destiny, etc) and some not so quick (Batman games, Cod and Battlefield games), that's just how it is.

@suikodudeman: You're a dreamer, this game is deader than a door nail, the free to play aesthetic in a full priced game was never going to fly. They shot themselves in the foot with pure greed.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@suikodudeman: Because Gamespot is pretending like it is relevant and writing multiple articles a week on it.

Marketing, nothing more. Game's long gone from the Steam top 100. For a multiplayer only game released not even 6 months ago - it's dead.

Avatar image for brandonmacleodE

Alright I'll tell them. More people are playing MW2 than Evolve because the game gets super boring after awhile. Evolve is not a franchise which can be compared to GTA or BioShock.

Avatar image for suikodudeman

@brandonmacleodE: Got any hard proof? It's very easy to make such a claim and then expect people to blindly accept it. This isn't religion, so you can actually back things up with hard evidence instead of saying "have faith that what I claim is true".

Avatar image for brandonmacleodE

For the love of god gamespot. REMOVE THIS NEW STUPID COMMENT SYSTEM. Either add a like button to this new comment system or take away the new comment system all together.

Avatar image for Stogin

@brandonmacleodE: *Like* Since they took that away as well...

Avatar image for abehpfan

@brandonmacleodE: Amen.

Avatar image for suikodudeman

@abehpfan: Agreed.

Avatar image for brandonmacleodE

@suikodudeman: And if someone makes a good comment, it'll just be lost forever in this sea of bad comments because there's no way to differ the bad comments from the good ones.

Avatar image for rlakhani

@brandonmacleodE: Yeah. "Top Comments" thing is a necessity.

Avatar image for electrichobo99

Rented Evolve from Gamefly when it released and in my opinion, the game was boring and surprisingly thin on content. I wouldn't be obliged to play the next installment, nor revisit the existing game.

Avatar image for Stogin

@electrichobo99: Played the beta and felt the same, no thanks!

Avatar image for suikodudeman

And incoming whining from folks who either claim to have played and hated the game (and are probably lying through their teeth) or the folks who openly admit they haven't played/don't care to play the game and hopped on the "Hater bandwagon" comments in 3...2...1....

Avatar image for Stogin

@suikodudeman: So everyone that played it and didn't like it is a liar??? Ok, sounds legit...Or you're an Evolve fanboy (lol!) and don't like that others don't share your opinion. Get over yourself.

Avatar image for abehpfan

@suikodudeman: What a ridiculous strawman argument. Newsflash: the game was a massive disappointment along with the likes of Titanfall and Destiny. People have every right to complain.

Avatar image for suikodudeman

@abehpfan: I am fine with complaints lobbed at any game. So long as they are legitimate complaints. The problem with most folks who complain is that a majority of them either a) have hopped onto the bandwagon to decry he game just because others are doing it, b) claim they've played the game and hated it yet then list off their complaints about features that shows they are clearly lying because the things that they mention aren't in the game or never been in it *prime examples I've seen listed by these kinds of folks include: game is F2P by forcing one to by any/all DLC, pay to have "more chances" to get into a match because you are only given a limited number per day, DLC characters are so OP they make the game P2W, etc*, and c) hyperbole (finding matches take hours, the game is so glitch ridden it is unplayable, the game is a massive disappointment).

I am not saying Evolve is without fault. Load times to get into a match are a bit sluggish compared to other MP games. There are certainly glitches (most prominently going through the ground or loading on top of the map, as well as the occasional graphical drop due to draw distances). And the game isn't living up to the hype we heard, but that's all games nowadays, so one needs to do a bit of research on whatever game they think they wish to purchase to see if it is truly what they want or not.

Do you and others like the game? No. Do I and others enjoy it. Yes. That's how it is for every piece of entertainment, from video games to movies to comics to TV to sports to political parties to religion to sexuality ad nausem.

What I stated earlier as both a semi serious and semi joking comment is those coming here constantly complain and insult those who have bought and enjoy the game and just never seem to quit. They drown out ligeitmate grievances (prime example is two posts above mine by ElectricHobo99) and publishers/developers will not know what truly needs fixing because of the inundation of complaints that just seem to be pure whining. Is my statement you responded to 100% fact? Heck no. But one just has to scroll through the comments to see it isn't 100% false either.

All in all, if you dislike the game, state why and leave it at that. If you like the game, state why and leave it at that. No need for the level of animosity I see happening on a daily basis on this site.

Avatar image for Hurvl

"it was probably a bit too multiplayer-focused" That's like saying that the ocean is too wet. There's little else that the game offers except MP.

Every game *needs* to have MP according to corporate execs, but apparently it's also possible to have too much MP. Oh, what a dilemma!

Discounted on steam at the moment by 20% until 01/06.

Personally I'll wait until it drops even lower.

Strauss Zelnick is a name I'm growing to hate more and more with every passing article he's quoted in.

"We think we've developed another permanent IP. But if there were something lacking, I would say it would be that it was probably a bit too multiplayer-focused, which we knew all along."

Nope. It was probably a bit too DLC-focused. League of Legends, DOTA 2 and Hearthstone are all multiplayer-focused and they're doing tremendous numbers. Multiplayer isn't inherently the problem. Your disgusting DLC practices are a big chunk of the problem. The other big chunk is that you've designed a game that gets old very quickly... at least it did for me, and I don't see how a lot of other people couldn't feel the same way.

Avatar image for animalmother013

Please no. Just give us another Left 4 Dead.

Avatar image for Stogin

@animalmother013: God I wish!

@animalmother013: I don't think that's quite up to 2K.

Avatar image for Psycold

Guys...should we tell them or just let them keep trying?

Avatar image for wookiepower4k

@Psycold: In a few months when they see Titanfall is outselling them they will take notice.

Avatar image for Chaos_Dante_456

I wish they'd nerf that damn STEALTH pounce makes no sense that a monster had enough time to crouch and pounce me as Caira while I was running away from it with speed boost on. It'd be nice if they'd either reduce Caira's speed boost cooldown, speed it up or make it last a bit longer.

Also I don't care for the new changes to some of the maps they feel more like they favor the monster. This last update/patch kind of soured me from the game. It seemed really anti-hunter. I've never heard one player say "Damn those jet packs sure are over-powered they should add an extra second of recharge to them,"

Avatar image for tommynj

Evolve is one of the worst games I ever tried playing. They just trying to save the people from Turtle Rock from losing their jobs by keeping this game going. Totally understand but some games just don't need to exist and Evolve is one of those games. I also want to see Red Dead for the pc! :D

Avatar image for Chaos_Dante_456

@tommynj: What exactly makes it the worst game you've ever played? Because it deffinitly is not a bad game

Avatar image for scorpionz9

@tommynj: I love Evolve. Would you and all the other haters be kind enough to ignore it - so the minority who love it can actually enjoy it. Thanks!!

Avatar image for sofaking2323

Permanent franchises translation = sequels. like Ubi then.

1. plan for sequels

2. make the prequel

3. ?

4. profit
