Evolve And Left 4 Dead Dev Announces A Cool-Looking VR Game

The Well launches on October 11 for $10.

Turtle Rock Studios, the developer behind Left 4 Dead and Evolve, has announced its next game. "The Well" is a turn-based fantasy role-playing game for Samsung Gear VR. It's described as a "classically designed RPG built distinctively for VR" with a "storybook art style" and a "dark, dreamlike atmosphere."

What does that really mean? Check out the first trailer below to get a look at The Well. The key art and some screenshots can also be seen below.

The Well is not Turtle Rock's first VR game, as the studio already released titles like Face Your Fears, Blade Runner 2049: Replicant Pursuit, and Otherworlds. But The Well is more ambitious than those, Turtle Rock GM Steve Goldstein said in a statement.

"The Well is not only our most ambitious VR title to date, it is our most unique," he explained. "We're excited to create a new, original fantasy world unlike anything we've seen before, and it's specifically crafted for the Gear VR platform. It's not just a fun game, it's beautiful. Gear VR is a medium that allows us to push the creative envelope and bring to life games we never thought possible."

The Well puts you in a mysterious world called Tholl, which is brimming with magic and fantastical creatures. You can play as one of four classes--Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Druid--and each of course has their own specific set of spells and abilities. You'll assemble a party of other characters and can level up your squad over time, earning more abilities in the process.

The Well launches on October 11, priced at $10 in the US. The game launches on the first day of this year's Oculus Connect event, and the game will be playable there.

Turtle Rock stopped working on Evolve a year ago this month. Support for the game is ongoing on all platforms, but now under the control of rights-owner Take-Two.

“It’s for VR” has become the new “It’s for mobile”.

what's EVOLVE? ohh i remember now ONE OF the overhyped garbage of 2016.

Avatar image for jack00

@wexorian: Evolve was an amazing unique game, unfortunately put down by casuals who sucked at it.

Avatar image for wexorian

@jack00: Not about sucking , it was Lame, Monster runs collects then attack playng as human Chase monster zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz unless he's leveled up, nothing unique or fun to play that's problem.

Avatar image for braghez

@wexorian: Well, it wasn't that bad...if they didn't make you pay a shitton of money for every character or monster they released...there were like what ? two season passes just for the "heroes" and the monster packs for the monsters they added later on :/
By the time they tried to recover with the f2p model and the revamp, it was already too late :/

Avatar image for wexorian

@braghez: They could had added more mods to it , Human PVP, monster vs monster, Left 4 dead style levels etc it was a CASH GRAB boring game from start.

Jeez what a let down, first they failed with evolve (just IMO) now they do this.. Every time i get excited for actual L4D3 news on Google i get disappointed.. And i know already that Valve are supposed to be giving us L4D3 but any bit of news would be nice, it's kind of turning into HL3 hype now.

Don't get what's taking so long. A sequel to L4D2 is long overdue.

@nibbin1191: Bethesda has done more than enough to satisfy the ES crowd and they have given other studios their blessing to make spin-offs, so that's a bad example. They want to make other games for a change and I say they've deserved that chance.

Samsung Gear VR: The shortest-lived gaming platform I've ever owned. The free units arrived, I spent multiple hours installing the (surprise: NOT uninstallable!) bloatware, and less than 4 hours being minimally amused by the "games" (tech demos).

The overall Samsung bloatware is so bad now that the 7 is the last Samsung phone I'll ever purchase. Straight Android from here out, likely on Nexus.

@Pyrosa: Use WISE Uninstaller to get rid of the bloatware...

oh my, they copied the aesthetic of severed! i mean, seriously. vr is hopeless with the current tech -- this game will need to be available traditionally as well if they hope to garner any sales on it.

First they said they're not making L4D3. Then they chose a minor VR console for their platform of choice.

It's like a double whammy of "meh".

Avatar image for aboatman

@Barighm: Well they can only make L4D3 if Valve wants to make L4D3, since they own the rights to the IP....

looks cool but samsung VR game means unfortunately not too many will be able to play it. I have a VR and have checked out Otherworlds by them and it was pretty boring.

Avatar image for MJ12-Conspiracy

game looks pretty but I don't think going VR will make em a lot of money...in fact so far VR is very niche.....

but if this was a regular game i'd keep an eye on it.....it looks pretty good actually, I just don't do VR.....

When can we expect the preorder bonus and season pass announcements?

Not gonna lie this looks pretty frigin cool. Save your judgment for after you watch the trailer.

From big "tripul AY" developer to Mobile VR developer. Sounds like a Devolve to me. Guess that's what happens when you sell your soul for blue weapon skin DLC.

Avatar image for MJ12-Conspiracy

@catsimboy: blue weapon skin??? I thought it was the purple weapon skins that takes souls......and the green monster skins that devours said souls......lolz

Avatar image for yourefakenews

$10 which doesnt include the $180 worth of Day one DLC =)

Avatar image for oskuuu

Just make Left 4 Dead 3 and dont screw it up like you did with Evolve!

Avatar image for yourefakenews

They dont own L4D anymore, Its Valves.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte

@yourefakenews: They could always use a different title and cast, I don't think valve owns 'cooperative zombie shooters'.

Avatar image for MJ12-Conspiracy

@yourefakenews: and valve is now a game developer that doesn't make games anymore......

Avatar image for Ohaidere

I lost interest when it didn't immediately say they wanted to print money so were making l4d3

Avatar image for with_teeth26

I was intrigued then I saw "VR" somewhere in the first paragraph and then I was no longer intrigued

Avatar image for gamer112696

@with_teeth26: I was disappointed two words earlier. LOL I got excited when I saw VR and then really disappointed when I saw “Samsung Gear”.
