Now Playing: Project Octopath Traveler - Official Trailer

While we knew the latest Nintendo Direct would run a longer-than-usual 45 minutes, it still managed to surprise with just how much was packed into it. There were numerous game announcements, details announced, release dates shared, and trailers showcased. Although a number of these games--like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus for Switch--aren't coming until next year, there were actually a number of things that you can download now on Switch and 3DS.

On the Switch side, perhaps most notable is the demo for Project Octopath Traveler, the new RPG from Square Enix and the team behind Bravely Default. Additionally, those who owns Arms can grab an update for the game that introduces a new fighter named Lola Pop and the ability to remap the controls.

3DS owners get an RPG demo of their own, this one for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth. And those with either a New 3DS or a New 2DS can now purchase Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, which is exclusive to the New line of systems.

A number of other things are coming in the near future, too. Yo-Kai Watch 2 owners can get a free Oni Evolution update starting on September 14 that adds a new mode. SteamWorld Dig 2 launches for Switch on September 21, with Golf Story coming sometime this month. A free update for Flip Wars launching in the near future adds a new stage and modes, as well as wireless multiplayer. Splatoon 2 adds a new map on September 15, with a new map and weapon coming soon.

I loved bravely default & bravely second, as they were gorgeous & played great. Octopath traveler is so very disappointing to me, as I can't stand 16 bit look & that stops me from being able to enjoy it. The VO's are horrible, & it looks like any 16 bit game with some particle effects in battles, and ambient occlusion used heavily. Looking like every RPG in the 90s is not unique, sorry.

Also, GS makes it seem like Etrian Oddessy V demo was available on that day to download, but it wasn't & it's still not on eshop, so I'm not sure why y'all said that.

Octopath is looking pretty sweet. Unique visuals, interesting mechanics. Wish I had a Switch.

@WautraetsM: They did deprive Wii U owners of a lot of late life content to do so, which, from a business perspective, was obviously the right thing to do. Since the Switch os doing so well, it's nice to see 3rd parties on board as that will fill the gap between Nintendos major releases.

I'm on the fence about splatoon. It seems kinda fun, never tried it.

@Richardthe3rd: Honestly, I found Splatoon very addicting. Very well done and great to pick up and play or marathon. Only online shooter I play other than BF1

@Richardthe3rd: You won't regret it. It's tons of fun, and manages to have a unique feel compared to other shooters. Plus, you can get a shotgun umbrella! ...I love my splatbrella...

Damnit Nintendo stop doing good with the switch! I've done well in not buying one but it's getting harder everyday....

I think before splatoon is much to me it'll need local split screen so I can play alongside with my son. It's honestly baffling that this mode wasn't part of it from the beginning...

I would have expected mario to have been more of a bear with a hairy chest and back.
