Now Playing: All The Big News From The Game Awards 2018 - GS News Update

God of War took home the biggest prize of them all at The Game Awards in 2018, beating out Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Spider-Man, Monster Hunter World, and Celeste for the overall Game of the Year. God of War also won Best Game Direction and Best Action Adventure, so it had a pretty good night. However, plenty of other awards were handed out to celebrate the finest video games had to offer this year.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 did not win Game of the Year, it didn't go home empty-handed. It won Best Narrative, Best Music/Score, Best Audio Design, and Best Performance for Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan.

Epic's Fortnite was also a big winner tonight, taking home the Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer awards, while Into The Breach won Best Strategy Game.

You can see a full rundown of categories and winners below. Aside from all the awards, there was a ton of news, including some major announcements. Some had been teased in advance, like Obsidian revealing a new game (the Fallout-esque The Outer Worlds), while others came as a complete surprise, such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Persona 5's Joker in Smash Ultimate.

God of war won for me, kept me interested the entire way through and coming back for more. Red deads story didn't progress fast enough, at chapter 6 atm and the game stopped calling to me about 3 weeks ago.

Rockstar is making millions of dollars a day. Don't feel bad for them. I'm glad GoW won for a change. It really was pretty exceptional.

Well deserved. I was expecting it to go to RDR2 because it's more recent and people remember recent things more favorably.

GoW was surprisingly fun in ways the previous games weren't.

I have no beef with GoW winning, it's a brilliant game, looks amazing on the pro and an excellent experience.

Personally I think RDR2 i just edges it and is also a real masterpiece. They are very different games, but the world in RDR2 is just incredible.

@barcaazul: Red Dead is exceptional, I would not have issues with either winning. They are literally 1a and 1b in my mind. That being said, I think God of War took more risks.

@soltar:

Again, completely agree. Love the shop keeper interactions and stories in the boat, but then on the other hand, RDR just throws you some wierd interaction out of the blue. I love both games in different ways

Since when Monster hunter world is a rpg? That category award should have been for Ni no kuni 2, this game is a masterpiece, and didn't win anything? These awards are trash.

Huh, I didn't think GoW would actually win but both it and RDR2 are pretty good game, can't go wrong with either of them.

I know I'm late to the conversation, but I just completed GoW this Monday and it was an absolute masterpiece. The graphics, the story, the attention to detail; everything. Truly a wonderful game.

@justthetip: I absolutely HATED RDR2 for the first 2.5 chapters of the game. I literally had to force my way through and there are so many things the game doesn't explain to you.

By chapter 3 I srarted warming up to it. But I do a lot of wondering out in the world, I save and then do some crazy shit to see what happens, then reload.

But I definitely think the game is over rated. With all of the bugs that affect gameplay for players, Rockstar chooses to patch the money glitch first in the single player part? C'mon.

@chubby170: Nope. Sony really wants to flog the dead horse walking that is PS Now to us which has the game as a part of its service. PS Now is the excuse for Sony not even attempting to do backwards compatibility as well.

@chubby170: I’d listen to more opinions. It’s, IMO, absolutely amazing. I recommend watching Tim Rogers’ “review” on the game to see why. The game’s slow pace makes it not for everyone.

No surprise. I didn't buy GOW, being i'm not into these fantasy genre's, but Red Dead's control system was too outdated and clunky. That alone docked it a point or two. It's a shame all that work and production, to drop the ball on a very simple concept.

Want to win an award, start by doing some Manga Style graphics. That's half the battle, apparently.

Not so bothered about game of the year, as Rockstar don’t need or care about it most likely, even though RDR2 is my goty.

What I am SO pleased about is the award for Roger Clark.

That performance was something else.

There’s some great V/A performances out there, but just like so much else in RDR2 story mode, Roger Clark set a new bar for the industry.

Congrats to him.

Fair trade I guess. Both games deserve the praise and recognition. Absolute titans of the industry.

@chubby170: No, one was for the score and one was for sound design. And if you think those are unimportant things in a story driven game, then.. well, you're entitled to your opinion, even if it's wrong.

I could also say then that GoW won just 2 awards. Since the GotY and best action adventure award was basically the same award in this situation. If one of those two won best action adventure, they also automatically won GotY. You can't split them.

@Berserk8989: I think they are the last of what matters for a game to be good. Music and Score are the same in my book. A game that is bad isnt going to be saved by its music/score...

@chubby170: Music/score is the same award. Which RDR2 won. But they also won for audio design, which is not music, but the implementation of music, voices and all other sounds and audio details in the game. And yes, both are of utmost importance, especially for long, cinematic, story driven games. GoW surely wouldn't have won GotY, if it also didn't have the great music score and sound design that it has. RDR2 was just better in that regard.
