Sony Online Entertainment announces significant upgrades to the EverQuest engine; requires all players to upgrade to DirectX 9.

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) today announced that it is making significant upgrades to the EverQuest engine, which will require all players to upgrade to DirectX 9. SOE plans to patch in the new engine sometime during the next month or two, thus making the game stabler and more efficient.

This patch is what requires all EverQuest players to upgrade to DirectX 9, the latest version of Microsoft's 3D software. SOE is concerned that a small percentage of current players, believed to be fewer than 1 percent, will find that older video cards are not compliant with DX9. SOE has consequently set up its own tech page, which provides information to players who might find themselves in this minority. SOE has additionally struck a deal with Nvidia and eVGA.com to supply players with discounted DX9-compliant video cards.

EverQuest is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was originally released in 1999. For more information, check out our previous coverage of the game.
