Events of Uncharted 4 Mean Sequel Starring Nathan Drake Would Be "Really Hard"

"This is the end for Nathan Drake."

If there is to be another Uncharted game after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, it would be "really hard" for it to star series hero Nathan Drake due to the events that transpire in this year's entry. That's according to co-director Neil Druckmann, who talked more about saying goodbye to Drake and the series overall in a new interview.

No Caption Provided

"We've been with this character for so long," Druckmann told The Sun. "He's at the height of his popularity, so it's not a good business decision [to walk away from the series]. But I feel like the best way to honor him is to go out on top, to finish his story."

Druckmann went on to point out that the Uncharted series belongs to Sony and he can't speak for what their plans might be for the franchise after Naughty Dog moves on. However, Druckmann teased that the events of A Thief's End might make it difficult for Nathan Drake to play a part.

"But with the end of [A Thief's End's] story, it will be really hard to do a sequel with Nathan Drake," he said. "Maybe there'll be a prequel, maybe it will be a different character, I don't know. But this is the end for Nathan Drake."

Be sure to read the full Sun interview for more on Druckmann's thoughts on Uncharted 4 and more.

A Thief's End is the final entry in the Uncharted series that creator Naughty Dog plans to develop. Previously, Uncharted 4 lead writer Josh Scherr said it's "hard to imagine" the series moving forward without Drake in the lead role.

After another delay, Uncharted 4 is now scheduled to arrive in late April 2016 exclusively for PlayStation 4.

They're not going to spoil the game publicly like this, so I'm betting this is just something to throw off people's expectations.

The only way his death will work is if it's super slow and agonizing and he is doing it for his kid or something like that. Like Fallout 3 where the death is slowly suffocating for the good of humanity. Otherwise it will feel wack and have no impact. I mean what's going to happen somebody is going to shoot him? The dude gets shot in every game he's been in.

@AyatollaofRnR: I don't think he dies. It would be crazy to spoil that now. As some1 below mentioned already it's probably to hype the game (like it needs that :) ). Though maybe he loses both his hands and can't climb anymore :) That would be the end for his adventures.

A new studio could ignore this game and write a new story with him in. No ones says it would have to follow the ND path and tie in to its story.

They've been saying this is Drakes last game for ages now... just stop with the hints and leave it at that please! We can all assume he either ends up crippled, in jail, or vows off treasure hunts forever... time will tell! I mean they basically just confirmed he doesn't die... too much info if you ask me.

@nl_skipper: Or he is just becomes too old. This game is already showing he was out of treasure hunting for several years and married. Drake in the first game was already in his 30s if I am not mistaken. And now he looks in his mid 40's.

@SpicyRamen10: There's plenty of games where the main character dies. Heck b/c of COD it's basically cliche now. But seriously GOW kratos dies if i'm not mistaken (and I'm not even counting the two times he dies as a means to progress through the sequel). Heavy Rain, Legacy of Kain the main character dies. FFX the main character like pseudo dies. Shadow of the Colossus you die, well more like turned get turned into a demon baby but it's basically dying. I'm sure there's plenty more.

I guess he'll become a family guy and have children or whatever cause they said it will be HARD not IMPOSSIBLE. I would be cool to see next generation Drake having his own adventures (but not Uncharted-named cause it will be just cheap to use that name after original story ended)

It's cute when they act like this franchise has ever had an engrossing storyline. We don't care about Nathan Drake he's your average everyman interchangeable with a dozen or so other kinds of protagonists. I know they're going to hype this as the big finish but they did the same with Uncharted 3 and that game landed with a resounding thud. It wasn't bad by any means but it was nowhere near the masterpiece that part 2 was. This franchise peaked with 2, that's all that's left.

@Bread_or_Decide: I agree that #2 was the high point in the series, but I disagree that Nathan Drake isn't interesting or worthwhile character. I'm guessing you likewise find Indiana Jones interchangeable, since both characters have about the same level of development.

@Bread_or_Decide: I've played both versions (PS3 and PS4) of both games and I find number 3 more heart racing then 2 and I like the comradery between characters and the back story of how Nathan and Victor first met.

Uncharted as it is, a game of adventure and fortune, such stories neither dies nor have limits, and could be "milked" without effecting the game in bad ways, however, it is time for a new protagonist as it is for god of war franchise, most knew there's a new God of war in progress, Kratos is one of the most unique characters, nevertheless, I really don't want to see him in another God of War.

Don't worry Sony, you'll be able to milk this franchise much further than you've already did. Later PS5 will get a remaster and early PS6 will get a ported collection of the remaster. And the sheep will buy anything with ND printed on.

@SpicyRamen10: well it seems the sheep went crazy with this fact. Here's a hint for you to leave your sheep days behind and start a whole new free gaming life: don't worry about brands and only purchase games you didn't play before! Why should I pick a PS4 if it's been a while since I've played 90% of it's games on PS3?

Well, I'll go ahead and answer your question, to play the other "10%" so I'm not missing out on any games.

Drake dying would be too obvious. They've already stated that this could potentially be the last Drake Uncharted so leave it at that. No need for a possible spoiler.

I think they should stop spoiling their damn game XD...

Seriously, what's the point ? The game is called "A Thief's End"... It's already been hinted for quite some time that it might be the last Uncharted game, that ND wants to move on... Which is fine...

But do they really have to bring this up ? We get it, Drake might die, it might be the last Uncharted game... But talking about it is only going to piss people off. If Drake does die, people are going to be pissed because ND spoiled the big finale months before release, and if Drake doesn't die, people are going to be pissed because they marketed the game as a conclusion with a tragic ending and we got a by the numbers sequel that doesn't kill off anyone... In both cases, I feel like it'll make people angry.

Just tell the story you wanted to tell, not spoiling it to the fanbase, then people can make their own opinions when they play the game. I really hate when games use the "protagonist might die" thing to sell copies... Wasn't a big fan of it in Hitman Blood Money, despised it even more in MGS4, when the whole game was build thematically to imply Snake was going to kill himself, only to backpedal in the epilogue. Heck, even Uncharted 3 was guilty of this , with the whole "sully is dead" crap they tried to pull in the last few chapters...

A good storytelling doesn't trick it's fanbase into believing something is going to happen, then delivering precisely the opposite.

This is misdirection. Pretty obvious Drake isn't going to die. ND is just hyping it up so it can be a surprise when he doesn't. They've been WAY too obvious about it, which means its a red herring.

@JohnCrichton: UC4 became all about hype. There are many decent games out there, and ND are trying to hype the hell out of this game. Only if Sony had any devent exclysive lately, UC4 could've been released like the normal game it's likely to be.

If they kill off Nathan just for MUH ENDING NEEDS TRAGEDY I will be madder than a wet hen. I am so sick of this trope infesting every game I play nowadays. It's getting old and doesn't make for good replayability-whether it be for one standalone game or an entire series. Also, way to reveal way too much before the game is even released ND. Even if it isn't an outright spoiler. These devs need to stop smelling their own farts.

@skootbootz: I don't play COD so i wouldn't know, i don't remember legacy of kain honestly, Heavy Rain has multiple endings, any character can die if you screw up, i don't think the other games you mentioned qualifies as deaths in the true sense of the word, not even Kratos, his body vanishes in the last cutscene so it's debatable.

@KILLEDbCRITICAL: Er... I gotta disagree with the ME ending being fitting. I mean it could have worked with Sheppard dying, but the way they went about it was just silly, they basically just introduced magic to the world to explain all the BS. It made a lot more sense in Bioshock... even though that was about time travel which never REALLY make sense lol.

I can't really think of any other games though (besides Red Dead Redemption) where the main character dies... certainly not enough to call it a trope, it happens but it doesn't feel like an overly used cliche to me, unlike the death of a loved one... that's a trope used way too much.

@nl_skipper: Yea, not talking about the way it was executed, could have been better in ME case but to me it was a fitting end to Shepperd considering the situation. Good example with Red Dead, forgot about that one.

The OP is probably overreacting. (fucking internet)
