Even This $185 NES Classic Edition Bundle Sold Out Almost Right Away

This TV was deemed an acceptable tax on the Classic Edition by many.

Amazingly, the $60 NES Classic Edition remains as hard to find now as it was at launch three months ago. Walmart had the hard-to-find system in stock this afternoon, but even putting it in an arguably unappealing bundle didn't stop it from selling out.

The bundle has changed and seemingly sold out a few times now; as of this writing, it's unavailable. For $180-$190, it includes a Classic Edition, a second controller (including a third-party arcade stick option), and a 32-inch TV.

No Caption Provided

As you might expect, given the price, it isn't a high-end TV by any means. It's a 720p display from ProScan that regularly costs $120 and can currently be had for $110 outside of the bundle. Reviews on Walmart's website are surprisingly positive overall, although, buyers likely shouldn't set their expectations high for such a cheap TV.

Not long after word of this bundle began to spread, it sold out (although it briefly become available again a few times). Extra controllers it had in stock also sold out almost instantly. The system itself reportedly could also be ordered through Walmart's app at one point, but demand clearly remains insatiable.

Last month, GameStop also chose to sell at least a portion of its allotment of NES Classic Editions in pricier bundles. These ranged from $80 to $130 and included things like a controller extension cable and a backpack.

The secondhand market on eBay has died down some since launch, when systems were reselling for upwards of $200. They still routinely sell for a fair premium, ranging from $100-$150.

Nintendo has continued to deliver additional NES Classic Editions since its launch, but both the system and extra controllers routinely sell out immediately--even when they're bundled with unwanted extras.

Last month, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted Nintendo misjudged the market but claimed supply issues have been "largely addressed."

Preorders for Nintendo's upcoming Switch console have sold out, though that comes as little surprise. What is somewhat strange is the fact that even the system's optional Pro Controller has sold out at some retailers.

1. Fire up classic nintendo game remembering how awesome it was.

2. Play game for 10mins and realize just how bad it is now.

3. Throw cheap ass console in the bin.

4. Buy nintendo switch.

5. Repeat from #1.

LOL

You'd think these reports would cause Nintendo to ramp up production...but they're fucking morons so that won't happen.

These dummies have left tens of millions of dollars sitting on the table because of this silly ass business practice. Same thing eventually happened with Amiibos. Nintendo halted production in favor of having the "hot commodity" instead of maximizing profits. Just total dipshits.

@frank_castle: These reports are exactly what Nintendo wants. They intentionally short stock to make it appear that Nintendo is a super hot, must have brand.

They've been doing it for years. Will do the same thing with the switch. Shortages drive up demand.

They already released another bundle at walmart. The Expired Dairy Bundle for $225: It includes the NES along with 50 lbs of recently expired milk products.

Those games are crap. If you're not willing to accept that you're stuck in nostalgia.

@Mudvayne84: How old are you? You must me under mid-20's I'm thinking.

In 20 years when Sony does something similar with the PS4 Retro Mini you'll gunderstand the power of nostalgia

@gamer162594: Nope, I was born in '84. Let me set you straight here, since you assumed I'm a young buck. As I stated, I understand nostalgia, and it's a money maker for this business model. The original Nintendo was cool back then, and paying that much for this plastic look-alike to play really old games = sucker. They're probably making around 85% margins on their profits from this thing. You like it? Great, then go for it.

@Mudvayne84: So you were 1 when the NES came out, and 7 when the SNES did. I can understand why an NES classic wouldn't strike a nostalgic cord with you. Thanks for setting that straight!

Even if you're just not a nostalgic person, so what. Doesn't make people who are nostalgic suckers. I'll gladly pay $60 for this when it's readily available. People paying $180 are suckers, but only because if you just wait you can get it for MSRP.

@gamer162594: Good! Looks like my point got across. Being 7 when the SNES came out is irrelevant, I had an NES for a long time. I'm a nostalgic person, I just happen to not be an idiot and won't throw money when the price is too high. Since this article refers to the $180+ bundle, which people are paying for this thing alone on ebay, you can safely assume I'm referring to those people as suckers.

These systems with their 30 year old game chips could be produced by the thousands very quickly.............if Nintendo wanted to. Why cant people see that the NES Classic was just a way for Nintendo to stay relevant during a holiday season when THEY HAD NOTHING. No great games coming out. The Wii U was dead. Nothing. They did not produce the NES Classic to make money.....they make a lot more selling these decades old games online for $6 per pop WITHOUT the cost of hardware. Nintendo plays their customers time and time again and like an abused spouse, the customers come back time and time again.

""hmmm why sub to online for nes games when i can just play them on my classic console""

*tin foil hat off, resume to ""normal""*

That's still cheaper than most of the NES Classic Minis on eBay. Might as well get a free T.V. for the price of the console.

Nintendo is so stupid they don't even realize all the money they are loosing by not supplying demand. The sales of this thing could almost make up for the WiiU's failure if they would just make more to sell, lol.

@monson21502: I highly doubt that they would make more money that way. If they intentionally kept stocks low, then most consumers would turn to alternatives. Only the die-hard fans would buy it with the bundles.

@gamer162594: But how will people hear about it if they don't see it in stores? Also, with so few people buying the product, not many would recommend others to buy one. And the ones that do hear about it and can't get it will just turn to emulators. It would only hurt Nintendo in the long term as word of mouth is still the best way to persuade someone to buy a product.

@n0on3: "But how will people hear about it if they don't see it in stores?" - Articles like this. The news. All the added attention that the shortage brings. FREE ADVERTISING!!

"with so few people buying the product" - It sells out immediately. What is your definition of so few people?

"can't get it will just turn to emulators" - Anyone who wants to play these games on emulators has done so already. The point of this is the nostalgia. The exact same controller, and the console looks the same.

"word of mouth is still the best way to persuade" - This is the digital age, social media and websites is where most people hear about things. And this has been ALL OVER those sites thanks to the fake shortage.

If there were piles and piles on the shelf, then people would just say "Eh, I'll wait until it goes on sale or clearance". By slowly releasing the inventory, you are lucky to see just one on the shelf. If you see one you'll want to snatch it up. Pure genius from Nintendo.

@gamer162594: Maybe for you the above is true. However, regular consumers almost never watch sites like these, and they make up the majority of the market. Also, the target market for the mini-NES is people who has played the original NES. Nowadays, not a lot of people from that era uses social media that often. And their friends are unlikely to share news articles like this one.

Also, doesn't Nintendo still receive the same amount of money even if there is a sale? And if they were hoarding, then it wouldn't be very profitable since they now have to hire warehouses to store the console.

What you mean unappealing? 180 for a 32" 720p TV and the NES classic edition is a great price. You must live in Richie Rich world where everything has to be top of the line.

I guess Gamespot is only trying to appeal to people who can afford and therefore only buys thousand dollar TVs and snubs their noses at good NES emulation now.

@cornbredx: Because this bundle doesn't save you any money - it would cost the same thing to buy everything separately. They're just making you buy a TV you might not be interested in if you want a Classic Edition.

@cornbredx: I totally agree, for people who don't have much to spend, this is a decent deal. Or maybe they just want an inexpensive second screen for the bedroom or something. This article is condescending as F, especially with the quote "Reviews on Walmart's website are surprisingly positive overall, although, buyers likely shouldn't set their expectations high for such a cheap TV." Then again, if I'd be working for GS, I wouldn't even trust my own reviews anymore.
