European Xbox One preorders will include free copy of FIFA 14

Phil Harrison confirms that all European Xbox One preorders will come with a free copy of EA's FIFA 14.

Update: Phil Harrison has announced during Microsoft's Xbox showcase in Cologne, Germany, that all Xbox One preorders will include a bundled copy of FIFA 14 when the console launches later this year. All existing preorders will include the free copy of FIFA 14, Harrison added. The offer will be available while stocks last.

Original Story: Microsoft could be gearing up for a Gamescom 2013 announcement that it will bundle a game for free with every European Xbox One at launch, in an attempt to lure customers away from buying a PlayStation 4 later this year, both CVG and MCV have reported.

No Caption Provided

The move is designed to make the Xbox One's £429 price tag more appealing over Sony's PlayStation 4, which will be sold for £349.

CVG reports that a "major third-party title" will be bundled free with every Xbox One, with an anonymous source saying it would be the same title Microsoft executive Phil Spencer was teasing for a Gamescom 2013 reveal. Microsoft is reportedly spending millions on the deal, says the site.

The site also reports that Microsoft could be lining up a similar promotion for North American buyers.

Meanwhile, MCV reports that Microsoft has signed a deal with EA to bundle copies of FIFA 14 with the Xbox One. FIFA is one of the biggest games in Europe, with FIFA 13 selling more than 3 million copies in the UK alone.

Sony has already pledged that PlayStation Plus subscribers will get a cut-down version of upcoming next-gen racer DriveClub for free, with fewer cars and tracks than in the main game, when the PlayStation 4 launches later this year.

Microsoft will release the Xbox One in November.

The only reason the Pro Evolution Soccer Series dosn't sell well is because it dosn' t have the liscences to fo FA premier league, the premier league is the most Popular league in the world, nobody wants to play as London FC or West London FC or Mersyside Red I and yes the PES has an online tournament for money thiers is also the AFC, UEFA and Copa Libabertas and I was wondering is thier an North American Champions League PES is King

American Xbox One preorderers should speak loudly and demand a game as well. After all, MS is listening to us consumers now. We deserve a free bundle game as well for the loyalty.

Microsoft and EA are getting tight. I just would like to know how the Xbox fans feel about their beloved company teaming up with the 2X worst company in America. Not trying to start anything, just stating fact.

@howiex89 I'm not trying to knock the game itself. Infact it's the only sports game I own. I enjoy the hell out of it, when I play that is. I haven't been able to play for a while because there's just too much else I've been playing. I do plan on getting back into it, though. I have bought my share of games slapped with the EA label and that's because my desire to play them is greater than any sort of animosity I may have. I don't like greed, but sometimes you only have one choice if you want something.

@tightwad34 @howiex89 Geed is what makes the games or any product that is made for profit. Never new why EA is always the target when every company operates with greed as the driving force. If they made games out of charity to play for free I think most of us would fined a new hobby.

Pfffftttt this is just another ploy my MS to get people to climb off the fence, but after the EU's get bored with their FIFA, they will be stuck with an overpriced cablebox/game player that really only catters to American TV.....

well then we should get it too..or even better give us madden. I don't see why they would give EU a free game and just give the US a big ass middle finger and that's to it's biggest customer base.

@Hint172

Agreed, but it may be in response to the fact that in Europe they don't get the TV services like in North America, and the cost over there is pretty high. If Sony really has over 1 million preorders, then MS had better pony up with madden.

Also due to the later launch of XB1 over there.....

These bundles never tempted me one bit. Not now and not in previous console generations either, because it's always some (to me) bland game that gets bundled. Sports and racing are very popular with a lot of people, but I don't even like the real world versions, so this marketing attempt fails completely with me. I don't consider myself to have peculiar tastes, I like some FPS games (like Serious Sam/Half-Life) and a lot of RPG games, but they never bundle any of those.

@the13stuff That's how it's looking. Only EU get it where as with the PS4 all users with PS+ get drive club and already have access to a bunch of free 2 play games. This may be good for EU players but this is putting alot of tension between Microsoft and their US players.

@deskp @deathwish026 If it's a physical disc and he hasn't installed the game, he could sell it to anyone, just not a retailer, and the new owner could play it without any sorts of problem. Physical discs, the perfect way to get around "not for resale" schemes, muahahahaha!!!!!

I hope they do something similar for the American market. $500 is a steep price to pay for a console (and that doesn't even include another $60 for XBL). Throw us a bone MS

@SurlyPotato Depends on the game and it depends on the genre. Some games are better on PC, some are better on consoles. That's why I have both

Wow, I've never played FIFA but everyone says it's a very good game. If they bring this to the US I'd be happy with it. I really thought that when MS said a third party game, that it'd be Dead Rising. Either one is fine with me

I can't believe how many people are complaining about this. They are giving away a free game, plus its most likely that the NA customers will get a different game. I dont care about Fifa or anything, but its a free game to play

@Archaicc It's more about choice, not many people I know that are getting a release version of either console will be getting FIFA 14.

So if the console price goes up £30 for a game i'll never play why should I spend that money for a Microsoft launch Gimmic

If it was Watchdogs i'd happily pay that extra money as i'm saving £20 instead of losing £30

Madden would be the natural product to bundled with XB1 in the US. The 360/PS3 version will have been out for nearly 3 months by the time XB1 debuts. The NFL season will be half over. EA could pocket a lot of dough through a bundle offer.

But if I were EA, I'd be pushing for NBA Live to be the exclusive. Unless "Live" receives glowing reviews, standalone sales will pale in comparison to NBA 2K14. For EA, it would be a way to guarantee revenue on a product which could end up as a massive flop.

Of course, NBA basketball isn't nearly as popular as the NFL. And I'm guessing Madden is still the best selling sports game of all...at least in the US. (I suppose it could be FIFA in other territories.) A Madden bundle for XB1 would attract much more widespread attention.

I love 2K14 and will definitely buy the XB1 version of that game. Would much rather see a Madden bundle offer. Doubt I would get much use out of NBA Live.

I think that's a very smart move and I know a lot of people who'll probably fall for that. FIFA is a huge deal where I'm from and I believe this could work out really well for Microsoft.

@GermanBomber "...fall for that"??

Like people "fell" for Playstation Plus and used it as justification for buying a PS3 or Vita in the last 2 years?

Every consumer will buy whatever system they feel is the best fit for their gaming needs. Plain and simple. And this console "war" isn't going to be decided 3 months before either system is released. Microsoft and Sony are going to spend the next decade battling each other with special offers, price points, new software features, exclusive games and more.

Don't act like Microsoft is pulling a fast one on XB1 buyers just because they toss in a free game.

@tjkraz @GermanBomber Calm down a little...I don't "act" like anything. When did I say anything about a "war"? All I was saying is, I believe this free version of FIFA 14 is enough reason for the European average Joe consumer (not talking about hardcore gamers or people who really dive into this stuff) to buy this system...what's wrong with that?

@GermanBomber @tjkraz Coming from someone who is a self-professed Sony "fanboy", there is an obvious negative connotation associated with with phrases like "fall for that."

Every next gen console buyer will have to weigh hardware quality (controllers, peripherals, etc.), software features, exclusive titles, bundle packs, pricing and more. Bottom line is a free game adds value to the XB1 purchase.
