European 360 backward compatibility detailed

Last week Microsoft announced the backward-compatibility list for the North American Xbox 360, a lineup of more than 200 Xbox games that would be playable on the 360 on launch day. Earlier this week, the company announced its compatibility list for Japanese 360s, which tallied a mere dozen titles.

European gamers wondering which end of the stick they were going to wind up with now have their answer: neither, really. Microsoft has released the official backward-compatibility list for the European Xbox 360, and it features 156 games. That's a good sight better than the Japanese list, but all of the games on the European list are on the North American list as well, albeit some under different names (for instance, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone goes by the book's original moniker, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). As with the other lists, Microsoft is promising to add to this lineup in the future, though it hasn't given a deadline for the next batch of titles to be added.

The list of European Xbox games playable on the Xbox 360 is as follows:
Alias
Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction

Legacy support is so important for this machine because not everyone has a limitless amount of cash with which to buy every launch title under the sun. They may only be able to pick up a few select titles but heck you can't be expected to keep occupied on just a few titles. If it had complete legacy support you could play some of your existing titles to help tide you over till you had enough cash to buy something new.

don't forget star wars battlefronts... as far as japan: they really didn't support xbox 1, why would they really need a huge list of xbox games to play? they never bought them...

Could do with more games TBH. No Panzer Dragoon Orta? No JSRF? No Burnout 3? Shocking! I'm going to be holding onto my current-gen Xbox then!

No Deus Ex, Battlefront or Metal Gear Solid! I hope they're going to introduce compatability with them later because I'm planning to sell my Xbox soon!

So Japan have ONLY 12 games, Europe - 156 games, but U.S.A. - 200+ games... I think it's not fair for those (***) who buy xbox36o in Japan and Europe, but if they do - it's they mistake! It's microSOFT after all!
I don't understand why people buy a new console, just to play old games? When I bought my PS2, I never touched a PSX game again, and it would probably be the same if i had a xbox now.
I'll tell you why. Not everyone owns an Xbox. I don't. But I am thinking of buying an Xbox 360, and finally I'll be able to pick up what I missed out on this generation! That is... if it's supported. Obviously, the bigger the list, the better. And I must say, this list really sucks. But please, stop assuming just because YOU don't see a need for it, that no one else will. Such a simple concept is probably beyond your comprehension.

colinjennison is wrong, there are many notable games missing from the list. The very popular Dance Dance Games (which you can use the controller to play) and one of my favorite Xbox games Doom 3. Not to mention they do not list every new games that is set to be launched around the same time as the Xbox 360, so it would be strange to see those not work right away. But, this is still much better then earlier speculated.

Sad, this is the list I'll have to go with, as I'm in Australia, and we use the PAL system, which Europe also uses. There are many great games in that list, and while I'm hoping to have a Xbox360 by November 2006, I sure hope there is a great deal more games to that list.

Strange, I assumed the PGR series was on there. Pretty weird Microsoft wouldn't have the emulation code ready for thier own bloody games. As for Far Cry, which I agree is a great game, it will obviously come in the first few months, it's just such a new title.

I miss a lot of games, especially PGR 1 and 2, Top Spin, Burnout 3, Full Spectrum Warrior, Rallisport 1 and 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta etc. But then again it's not like someone is going to sweep in and take my old Xbox away. :)

So these will be the games you can play on your Xbox 360 if you already own them on the regular Xbox right? Sounds like it's only fair. Playstation had already done that with the PS titles with the PS2. Nintendo is the only system that hasn't done it, unless you count their handheld things. As far as consoles go, nintendo never even uses the same device the games are on. All in all I think this is great for Xbox 360 fans.

I don't see how anyone can complain as it covers all the good games. Who wants to play Pulse Racer on thier Xbox 360 anyway?
