The numbers are in, and Marvel's newest superhero movie, Eternals, won the weekend. It made $71 million in the US and Canada and now stands at $161.7 million worldwide.

Globally, Eternals is now the second-biggest opening for a western film in 2021, only trailing F9, which made $163 million over its opening weekend around the world, according to Deadline.

For another comparison, Eternals' first weekend results put it close to the starts for Guardians of the Galaxy ($164 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($167 million).

For North America specifically, the $71 million that Eternals made is below Black Widow ($80 million), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75 million). It's also less than Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($90 million), according to IndieWire.

Eternals has the lowest aggregate review score for an MCU movie, and the film has a B CinemaScore rating, which is the lowest ever in the history of the MCU.

GameSpot's Eternals review said the movie is a "gorgeous experiment." The film was directed by Chloe Zhao, who won multiple Academy Awards for Nomadland.

"... at the end of the day, the strong points of Eternals are able to outweigh the missteps," reviewer Mason Downey said. "There is plenty of forward momentum to be found here and Marvel's willingness to deviate from its own formulas is a hopeful trend that Phase 4 continues to double down on."
